German to English: Berlin mental maps 20 years after the fall of the Wall General field: Other Detailed field: Journalism
Source text - German „Berlin hat sich sehr verändert, da gab es viele Baustellen, vieles wurde neu gemacht. Wenn man sich an diese schrecklichen grauen Häuser erinnert, dieses Graue hat gedrückt, im
Vergleich zu West-Berlin. Sogar die Laune wurde schlechter, wenn man sich die Häuser angekuckt hat. Ich habe dies dann immer mit der Ukraine verglichen, mit unseren vielfarbigen schönen ukrainischen Dörfern.“, so die Mitarbeiterin eines ukrainischen Verbandes in Berlin, die 1985 zunächst nach Ostdeutschland, und sieben
Jahre nach dem Mauerfall schließlich nach West-Berlin zog. Ihre Schilderung entspricht dem Raumklischee vom deprimierend grauen Ost-Berlin der Vorwendezeit, nur das hier zum Vergleich nicht pastellfarbene Einfamilienhäuser westdeutscher Provinzen herangezogen werden, auch nicht die funkelnden Schaufenster vom Ku’damm,
sondern bunte Dorfidyllen tief im Osten von Ost-Berlin.
20 Jahre nach dem Mauerfall stellt sich die Frage, wo und vor allem wie sich die Nahtstellen zwischen Ost und West im geeinten Berlin noch zeigen. Aussagen wie die obige machen deutlich, dass die Verortung Berlins auf der europäischen
Landkarte keine Angelegenheit objektiver
Vermessungen ist: zwischen Ost- und West-Berlin findet in manchen Fällen die Ukraine gar noch Platz.
Der Wahrnehmung des Berliner Stadtraumes liegen
damit persönliche Wanderungsgeschichten durch die Stadt, genauso wie kulturell tradierte Erinnerungen und politische Sozialisationen zu Grunde. All dies lässt sich nicht an neuen Bezirksgrenzen oder Straßennamen ablesen,
denn es ist auf ganz anderen Karten verzeichnet:

Kartenverheissungen
Karten wollen und können so allerlei. Im Alltag versprechen wir uns von ihnen Orientierung, die Darstellung von empirisch nachprüfbaren Fakten. Was der Karte ihre ungemeine Suggestivkraft verleiht, ist ihr Vermögen, auf einen Blick alles zu zeigen: den Umfang oder auch die glorreiche Expansion von Territorien, die Migration von
Menschen, Gütern und Ideen, die Verbreitung von Epidemien ebenso wie von Technologien, Kriegsschauplätze und Wohlstandsinseln, den Verlauf von Grenzen, den Verlauf einer Mauer durch eine Stadt.
Gemeinhin sprechen Karten eher ungern darüber, aus welchem ideologischen Tintenfass sie ihre Farben schöpfen. Ihre Entstehungsgeschichten verschwinden hinter grafischen Zeichen, was bleibt ist die Lüge ihrer Objektivität.
Manchmal muss sich die Karte aber widerwillig
beim Lügen ertappen lassen: Auf DDR-Stadtplänen
wurde West-Berlin zum Niemandsland. Westlich vom Brandenburger Tor und südlich vom Checkpoint Charlie erschien auf den Ostkarten eine blanke Fläche, die bestenfalls noch das Spinnennetz der S-Bahnhöfe und einige
Grünflächen preisgab – von den Häusern und Straßen drüben fehlte hingegen jede Spur.
In den Köpfen der meisten West-BerlinerInnen war der Osten der Stadt nun aber alles andere als eine tabula rasa, umgekehrt verfügten die BewohnerInnen Ost-Berlins in den Jahren der Teilung ebenso über mentale (wie auch
reale) Bilder vom anderen Teil der Stadt.
Die Karten in den Köpfen der BerlinerInnen, das waren und sind nicht nur die Mental Maps von Ossis und Wessis, sondern auch von MigrantInnen in beiden Teilen der Stadt. In eben der Absicht, etwas über subjektive Geographien
aus migrantischer Perspektive zu erfahren, hat
sich in dem von der in Berlin lebenden und arbeitenden Künstlerin Stefanie Bürkle initiierten Projekt ‚Placemaking‘ eine Forschungsgruppe zwischen den Disziplinen Kunst, Architektur und Ethnologie zusammengefunden.
Wir sind den Mauerfallerzählungen von Berliner MigrantInnen nachgegangen und haben ihre Bewegungen durch das Berlin der letzten 20 Jahre verfolgt.
Migration als räumliche Mobilität
Mit der Migration von Menschen nach Ost- und West-Berlin verbindet sich ebenso die Wanderung mitgebrachter Räume durch den Berliner Stadtraum, die zugleich den Blick auf das Berliner Stadtbild prägen. Als sie zum ersten Mal „durch die ersten Löcher in der Mauer“ hindurchschaut,
stellt eine Polin fest: „Es war furchtbar hässlich,
Ost-Berlin. Es sah aus wie Szczecin.“ Und auch fünf
Jahre nach dem Mauerfall wollte eine Russlanddeutsche bei ihrer Ankunft noch bemerkt haben, dass Ost-Berlin wie „der Stadtrand von Moskau“ aussieht.
Im Rahmen des Kunstprojekts ‚Placemaking‘ habe ich mit PolInnen in Berlin Interviews geführt und von ihnen Mappings zeichnen lassen. Die Wanderung von TürkInnen, UkrainerInnen, RussInnen und VietnamesInnen
durch Berlin waren ebenso Gegenstand unserer Untersuchungen.
Damit haben wir Migrationsgeschichten eingefangen, die unterschiedlicher kaum ausfallen könnten: Türkische GastarbeiterInnen, vietnamesische VertragsarbeiterInnen
und Boat People, polnische Nachwendebauarbeiter
und ukrainische SpätaussiedlerInnen wurden
weder in derselben politischen Realität sozialisiert, noch trafen sie auf dieselben Bedingungen im jeweiligen Ankunftsland
West-, Ost- oder aber dem geeinten Berlin.
Um etwas über den eigenen Bewegungsradius im Berliner Stadtraum zu erfahren, legten wir den MigrantInnen Stadtpläne vor. Diese Karten waren stark abstrahiert, sie zeigten die heutigen Berliner Bezirksgrenzen und -namen, den Verlauf der Flüsse und verzeichneten in den Ecken geopolitische Bezugspunkte: ‚Ost‘- und ‚Westdeutschland‘, sowie ‚Herkunftsland‘ und ‚anderswo‘. Wir baten unsere Befragten darum, tägliche Wegstrecken und Haltepunkte einzuzeichnen: Wo liegen Wohnort und Arbeitsplatz, wo wohnen Freunde und Familie? Wo werden wichtige Behördengänge und Arztbesuche vollzogen, welches sind die liebsten Orte, wo wird sich hingegen nur ungern aufgehalten? Und vor allem: Wie hat sich dies in den letzten 20 Jahren verändert?
Translation - English ‘Berlin has really changed. There were so many construction sites; so much has been redone. When you think back to those terrible grey buildings, that grey was oppressive in comparison to West Berlin. Even your
mood dampened when you looked at those buildings. I’ve always compared this to the Ukraine, with our pretty, colourful Ukrainian villages.’
The above statement was spoken by an employee of a Ukrainian association in Berlin, who first moved to East Germany in 1985, and finally moved to West Berlin seven years after the Wall fell. Her description matches the cliché of the depressingly grey East Berlin
of the pre-reunification period, only that here it
is not compared with the pastel-coloured houses found in West German provinces, nor with the twinkling shop windows of Ku’damm, but rather the colourful village idylls far east of East Berlin.
20 years after the fall of the Wall, the question
arises as to where and, above all, how the seams between East and West still show in unified Berlin. Comments like the one above make it clear that placing Berlin on the European map is not a matter of objective surveying: in certain cases, between East and West Berlin there is even room for the Ukraine.
Personal histories of migration thus shape the perception of space in Berlin, as do culturally passed down memories and political socialisations. All of this doesn’t become apparent from new district boundaries
or street names; it is instead documented on completely different maps: the maps in our minds.
Cartographic promises
Maps want to and can do all kinds of things. In everyday life, we turn to them for orientation, the representation of empirically verifiable facts. What gives maps their extraordinary suggestive powers is their ability to show everything at a glance: the scope or the glorious expansion of territories; the migration of people, goods and ideas; the spread of epidemics as well as technology, war theatres and islands of
wealth, the position of borders, the course of a wall through a city.
Maps are generally reluctant to reveal their ideo-logical backgrounds. Their stories disappear behind graphic symbols; what remains is the deception of their objectivity. Yet sometimes a map is forced to reveal its lies against its own will: West Berlin became a no man’s land on East German maps of the city. West of the Brandenburg Gate and south of Checkpoint Charlie, blank expanses appeared on the maps.
At best, they disclosed the spiderweb of S-Bahn stations and a few green spaces – but showed not a single trace of the buildings and streets.
In the minds of most West Berliners, the eastern part of the city was anything but a tabula rasa; and vice versa, during the division, the residents of East Berlin also had mental (as well as actual) images of the other part of the city.
The maps in the minds of Berliners were never just the mental maps of Ossis and Wessis, but also those of migrants in both parts of the city.
With the intention of learning about the subjective geographies from the migrant’s perspective, a research group emerged from
the project ‘Placemaking’, initiated by the Berlin
artist Stefanie Bürkle, which concentrates on the disciplines of art, architecture and ethnology. We have been pursuing stories of the fall of the Wall as told by Berliner migrants through the Berlin of the last 20 years.
Migration as spatial mobility
The movement of spaces through the city that have been brought along is also connected to the migration of people to East and West Berlin, and at the same time it shapes the view of the Berlin cityscape.
As she peered ‘through the first holes in the Wall’, one Polish woman thought: ‘East Berlin was ugly. It looked like Szczecin.’ And five years after the fall of the Wall, a Russian-German woman also noticed upon arrival that East Berlin looked like ‘the outskirts of Moscow’.
In conjunction with the art project ‘Placemaking’, I interviewed Polish people in Berlin and had them draw mappings. The migration of Turks, Ukrainians, Russians and Vietnamese through Berlin was also a focus of our research. That’s how we traced migrant stories that couldn’t have been more different from one
another: Turkish guest workers, Vietnamese contract workers and boat people, Polish post-reunification construction workers and Ukrainian returned settlers from former German settlements (Aussiedler) were neither
socialised in the same political reality, nor did
they encounter the same conditions in their respective place of arrival in West, East or reunified Berlin.
In order to learn about their radius of movement in Berlin’s urban space, we gave the migrants city maps. These maps were very abstract – they depicted the present-day Berlin district boundaries and names, the course of rivers and, in the corners, the geopolitical points of reference: ‘East’ and ‘West Germany’ as well as ‘country of origin’ and ‘elsewhere’. We
asked those surveyed to include their daily routes and stops: where do they live and work, where do family and friends live? In which areas are visits to important government offices and doctors’ offices; what are their favourite places; in which places would they rather not spend their time? And above all, how has all of this changed over the last 20 years?

Source text - German Als Klaus Habermaaß gefragt wurde, welcher zurückliegende Moment für ihn perfekt gewesen sei, antwortete er, darüber habe er nie nachgedacht. Statt über die Vergangenheit
zu sinnieren, sei er immer vollauf damit beschäftigt, in die Zukunft zu denken. Eine
klare Zukunftsstrategie und eine Vision zwischen Ambition und Machbarkeit seien für ein erfolgreiches Unternehmen unverzichtbar – sonst werde es schnell überholt von der Konkurrenz. Damit formulierte er ein wichtiges Grundprinzip erfolgreichen Unternehmerdenkens.
Harald Grosch, seit 1978 im Unternehmen, teilt diese Einsicht. Grosch hat die Zukunft im Blick, das gehört zu seinen Aufgaben. Die Herausforderungen, die HABA in den nächsten Jahren bevorstehen, analysiert er klar: »Wir gehen davon aus, dass wir die bisherige Strategie weiterführen können, angepasst an die sich verändernden Gegebenheiten auf den Märkten.« Ganz konkret definiert er als Unternehmensziel das
Generieren von Wachstum. Unsere sozial-unternehmerische Verantwortung ist es, Jobs zu
schaffen.« Ein moderates Wachstum muss erzeugt werden, um Arbeitsplätze zu sichern – es ist also auch eine Frage der sozialen Verantwortung. »Das erreichen wir«, so erklärt Harald Grosch weiter, »mit einem einzigartigen Programm, gültig für alle Betriebsbereiche: Die Produktentwicklung ist und bleibt die Kernkompetenz des Unternehmens. Ziel ist es, 80 % des Umsatzes mit selbstentwickelten Produkten zu erzielen und diese Produkte im Multichannel-Verfahren über die eigenen Vertriebswege zu vertreiben.« So bleibt der Produzent und Händler HABA immer eng in Verbindung mit den Kunden.
Diese Strategie birgt natürlich auch Risiken; so muss ein Unternehmen wie HABA ganz nebenbei Vertriebsstrukturen schaffen und erhalten, während Konkurrenten wie Amazon oder Zalando sich sozusagen hauptberuflich genau darauf konzentrieren können. »Die Onlineanbieter haben nur zwei Kompetenzen, und das sind IT und Logistik - diese beiden Kernkompetenzen sind allerdings nicht zu unterschätzen«, so Grosch. Die Herausforderung für HABA ist also, im Wettbewerb mit diesen in den Bereichen Onlinehandel und Logistik hochspezialisierten Marktgrößen zu bestehen. HABA ist ein mittelständisches Unternehmen, Amazon ein Weltkonzern – keine harmlose Konkurrenz also.
Eine weitere Herausforderung sieht Harald Grosch in dem Willen der Firma, keine qualitativen Zugeständnisse an den Markt zu machen, sondern weiterhin qualitativ auf höchstem Niveau zu produzieren, und das erfolgreich. Der Spielzeugmarkt unterliegt einem harten, globalen Preiskampf – eine weitere Herausforderung, der HABA sich immer wieder von neuem stellen muss. »Ist der Kunde weiterhin bereit, für gute Produkte etwas mehr zu zahlen?«
Die gegenwärtige Marktentwicklung macht es für Hersteller hochwertiger Produkte nicht eben leichter. »Der Einzelhandel verändert sich, und eine Hochpreispolitik ist im Onlinehandel schwerer durchzuhalten.« Die Konzentration auf die firmeneigenen Vertriebswege verschafft dem Unternehmen also zumindest in dieser Hinsicht etwas Luft, denn so kann HABA zumindest die Handelsmargen überschaubar halten. Außerdem war HABA schon immer sehr darauf bedacht, Abhängigkeiten von allzu großen Kunden und Auftraggebern zu vermeiden. Die vertriebliche Unabhängigkeit folgt diesem Prinzip.
Ein weiteres wichtiges Prinzip der Firmenentwicklung war und ist die Vollständigkeit des Angebots. Von der Mode für Schwangere bis zum Babybedarf, vom Baby übers Kleinkind, von der Krippe bis zum Kindergarten – die HABA-Firmenfamilie möchte ihren Kunden ein möglichst umfassendes Angebot an Produkten und Leistungen bieten. So unterschiedlich die verschiedenen Bereiche der Firmenfamilie auch sein mögen, sie alle vereint eine besondere Philosophie, ein ambitioniertes Konzept. »JAKO-O hat zum Beispiel einen sehr praktischen Ansatz: Qualität, z.B. Waschbarkeit der Stoffe etc. Bei HABA ist es die Gesamtheit schöner Produkte, farbliche Abstimmung, pädagogischer Nutzen. Bei Wehrfritz ist es die Gesamtheit, auch das Umsetzen neuer wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse wie zum Beispiel mit dem Möbelprogramm ›move upp‹ für den Bewegungsdrang der Kinder. Deshalb
haben wir uns beispielsweise auch an der Firma Project beteiligt, um uns im Bildungsbereich
weiterzuentwickeln.«
Dass die Rolle des Spieleerfinders und pädagogischen Vorreiters auch Nachteile mit sich
bringt, liegt auf der Hand: »Wenn wir etwas entwickeln, macht es ein Wettbewerber nach,
aber nur wir haben die Entwicklungskosten. Die Konkurrenz schaut das dann nur ab. Aber ich
denke immer, VW hat den Golf auch als Erstes erfunden, und der läuft immer noch!«
Wer im Konkurrenzkampf überleben möchte, muss nicht nur gut sein, sondern auch schnell. »Deshalb investieren wir in IT – wir haben ein neues Produkt-Informationsmanagement-System, damit verwalten wir Bilder, Texte, Videos etc. Das ist
verbunden mit System der Warenwirtschaft, das die kaufmännischen Prozessabwicklungen
beschleunigt. Dies gilt ebenfalls für unsere Onlineplattform und den gesamten ›e-commerce‹. Wir haben diese ganze IT-Kompetenz nach Rodach geholt, um schnell Anpassungen realisieren zu können, sobald sie nötig sind. Ich bin überzeugt, dass es wichtig ist, schnell zu sein – Schnelligkeit ist ein Schlüssel zur Weiterentwicklung des Unternehmens.«
Wandel, maßvolles Wachstum und eine sinnvoll gesteuerte Expansion werden die nächsten
Jahre bestimmen. Der Standort Bad Rodach steht dabei nicht zur Debatte, darin sind sich alle
einig. »Die Füße in Bad Rodach, die Augen in aller Welt.«

Instead of musing over the past, he is still completely occupied with thinking about the future. A clear strategy for the future and a vision which balances ambition with feasibility is essential for a successful company – otherwise it would be quickly surpassed by the competition. With this concept he expresses an important basic aspect of successful entrepreneurial strategy.
Harald Grosch, active in the company since 1978, shares this point of view. Grosch has the
future in his sights, that's part of his job. He analyzes the challenges that HABA will face in
the coming years: »We expect that we can build upon our current strategy, adapting it to the
changing conditions of the markets«. One of the company's very concrete goals is generating
growth. »Creating jobs is our social-entrepreneurial responsibility.« Moderate growth is essential in order to ensure jobs – therefore, it's a matter of social accountability. Harald Grosch explains that »we achieve this with a unique program which applies to all areas of the company: product development is and will remain the core competency of the firm. Our goal is to generate 80% of revenue with products we've developed ourselves and to distribute these in a multichannel process via our own distribution channels.« That's how the producer and distributor HABA always remains in close contact with its customers.
This strategy comes with its own risks, of course – a company like HABA has to create and maintain entire distribution structures alongside its other work, whereas competitors such as Amazon and Zalando concentrate full-time on precisely that. »Online providers have just two competencies – IT and logistics – but those two core competencies should not be underestimated.« HABA's challenge
is thus to compete with the highly specialized market leaders in online sales and logistics. HABA is a medium-sized company, Amazon is a worldwide concern – no harmless competition.
Harald Grosch sees another challenge in the firm's intention to make no compromises on the market when it comes to quality, but instead to continue to produce the highest quality goods possible, while remaining successful. The toy market is subject to hard international price competition – another hurdle that HABA has to continually face. »Is the customer still prepared to pay more for high quality products?«
Today's market doesn't make it easier for the producers of high-quality products. »Retail is changing, and a high-price policy is more difficult to maintain in the online marketplace.« Thus HABA's concentration on its own distribution channels allows the firm a little more wiggle room in this sense, since it can at least keep their trade margins manageable. In addition, HABA has always done its best to prevent dependencies on large-scale customers and contractors. Their independence in distribution follows this principle.
Another aspect which played a key role in the firm's development was and is the comprehensive
scope of their products. From maternity wear to baby products, from baby to toddler, from nursery
school to kindergarten – the HABA family wants to offer its customers a spectrum of products and
services which is as wide-ranging as possible. Although HABA's divisions are so diverse in their
offerings, a particular philosophy and an ambitious concept unites them all. »For example, JAKO-O has a very practical approach: they focus on quality, for example by making textiles which are easy to wash. At HABA, the overall concept is appealing products, color coordination, educational value. At Wehrfritz, their concept also includes the utilization of new scientific discoveries, such as the furniture line ›move upp‹, which is tailored to children's urge to move. That is why we were also involved in the company Project, for instance, in order to become more advanced in the educational
sector.«
It is no surprise that the role of toy inventor and pedagogical pioneer also comes with
disadvantages: »When we develop something, a competitor copies us, but only we carry the costs of product development. The competition just imitates what we do. But then I remember that VW was the first to invent the Golf, and it's still on the market!«
If you want to beat the competition struggle, it's not enough just be good, you also have to be
fast. »That's why we invest in IT – we have a new product management system with which we
manage photos, text, videos etc. That is networked with the inventory management system, which speeds up the business processes. This is also true for our online platform and the entire ›e-commerce‹. We acquired all this IT competence in Rodach in order to be able to quickly adapt to the
market whenever necessary. I am convinced that being quick is important – speed is the key to the
company's further development.«
Change, the right amount of growth and sensibly managed expansion will determine HABA's
direction in the next few years. But everyone agrees that the Bad Rodach headquarters are not up for debate. »Our feet are in Bad Rodach, our eyes throughout the whole world.«
