Before going on a refresher course in Italy two weeks ago, I did a Saturday afternoon tour of possible venues in Cambridge.
Firstly, as regards specific suggestions that have been made here or to me directly:

-The Orchard, Granchester: Lovely idea but not really in line with questionnaire preferences. Access difficult for those on public transport. No alternative if it rains (other than expensive room booking) and if it’s fine, likely to be very busy on an August Saturday

-The Orchard, Granchester: Lovely idea but not really in line with questionnaire preferences. Access difficult for those on public transport. No alternative if it rains (other than expensive room booking) and if it’s fine, likely to be very busy on an August Saturday, with queues for everything.

-Wetherspoons pub in Regent Street: Much to commend it but, on my visit, there was hardly a spare seat to be had.

I ended up with a shortlist of three:
-Fort St. George in England (as also suggested by Catherine): A pub by the river on Midsummer Common, with outside seating areas. Serves food. Website: http://www.fortstgeorge.com/ Disadvantages are its distance from the station (there are bus services but not quite door to door) and smallish inside rooms which might fill up if the weather’s not fine.

-The Hog’s Head: A sizeable pub on two floors, overlooking Parker’s Piece (one of Cambridge’s green areas). Serves food. Within walking distance of the station. On my visit the upper floor was not at all busy and the seating areas are organised in several “zones” with largish tables which seemed reasonably suitable for our purposes. If it’s fine, there is the option of going outside onto Parker’s Piece (sitting on the grass as the students do).

-The Boat House: Recent chic (?) refurbishment with small garden on the river and an upstairs room bookable for £50. Serves food. Close to the Fort St. George and therefore not the most convenient for the station.

After speaking to the Management, my recommendation is for the Fort St. George in England, partly for its setting and partly because they will reserve (have reserved) an (outside) area for us at no cost provided we (or a good number of us) arrive at or around midday. In the event of inclement weather and the pub being busy we can have a contingency plan to meet, I suggest, at the Hogshead (if in doubt ring my mobile on the day).

I shall E-mail everyone individually with a map, Park and Ride details, Bus details from station, my mobile No. etc. I can also offer a limited taxi service to anyone who arrives early enough and is worried about finding their way in a strange town. If anyone else is local or knows Cambridge and is willing to do likewise, perhaps they will let me know.

I will arrange the Powwow attendance sheet. If anyone is looking to achieve any of the following, perhaps they would also let me know so that the attendance / appointment of a “Profile pro” can be requested:
-Getting a profile photo taken (free if camera is available)
-Obtaining identity verification (free; bring an ID)
-Completing a ProZ.com Native Speaker interview (a fee may apply)
-Upgrading to Platinum membership at a reduced rate (currently $100 rather than $12

Please feel free to comment – but in the absence of official organisers, someone has to take an executive decision!

Re Cambridge powwow venue 4 Jul 9, 2003

Thanks for all your work, Russell. I'm happy to go with your suggested venue. I'd be interested in getting identity verification and will bring along my driver's licence (old type with no photo - is that OK?).

I agree with Gillian about choice of venue. Could you please tell me a bit more about the native speaker interview? Also, could I contact you later about a ride from the train station? I haven't booked my train tickets yet.

Cheers Lisa

Re. ID verification Jul 9, 2003

Gilian, as far as I know, you need an ID with a photo for that purpose. I am organising a powwow in Lithuania later in the year, and looked these things up.
