Closer to powwow date Feb 27, 2012

Dear all,

A warm welcome to all new powwowers!

Although life has been/is being a bit hectic for me lately, between both personal and work things, I just wanted to post a gentle reminder that the time is approaching and I think it may be a good time to start deciding if you will be able to attend or not.

Dear all,

A warm welcome to all new powwowers!

Although life has been/is being a bit hectic for me lately, between both personal and work things, I just wanted to post a gentle reminder that the time is approaching and I think it may be a good time to start deciding if you will be able to attend or not.

In case you are flying from out of Spain, I highly recommend a cheap flight offers' website I recently discovered, called "Atrapalo.com". There is also one called "edreams.com".

In regard to places to stay, like I said, I can offer help regarding holiday rentals for places in the same neighborhood where I live, or in nearby towns or Malaga city. I could also get some basic info about possible hotels or hostals. It all depends on how long you will be staying and how much you can spend, if you will be combining this with tourist visits to, for example, Granada or other nearby points of interest.

About the powwow plans, I will be coordinating with Susan Starling the "pre-powwow" evening in the Malaga city area on Friday, April 20, probably from 7 pm till... you like.

My initial idea of having the powwow on Saturday as a barbecue at my place is still is on, though obviously depending on hopefully not getting any rain (it would actually be very unsual, but you never know). We would need to coordinate how to get here from where you plan on staying (again, if you stay in any of the holiday rental places in my neighborhood, you would just need to walk to my place). We could start either at 5 or 6 pm, once the sun is not facing the area where we will be sitting.

So, as the plan is to have a barbecue, we also need to coordinate meal/drink expenses, so I would appreciate that, as soon as you are sure you are attending, to contact me via email or internal mail here in Proz.com to send you the details to pay for said expenses. I think a 20 euro fee per person should be enough to cover meal/drink expenses (but I am open to other suggestions or ideas in this respect).

Finally, very important: please change your attendance icon (above) to green as soon as you know you will be attending. No problem to change it in case of last minute changes, but I just need to get an overall idea of how many people may be attending.

Talk to you again sometime soon,

Ivette

@Lynette Feb 27, 2012

Hi Lynette,

Great that you are interested in coming.

Public transportation can be scarce here in the Costa del Sol area, so I totally understand about not having a car and buses not running late.

I think a solution would be to coordinate with anyone else coming from Marbella to share a taxi back.

Another possibility would be to stay at a friend's place in this area, should you know anyone in the area.

Hope you can make it anyway,

Hi Ivette Mar 6, 2012

Thanks first of all for organising this powwow.

Of course, I´m planning to attend, but it´s still a bit early to say for sure if I´ll make it.

Where exactly was it again? Was it Fuengirola, do I remember that correctly. If so that would be relatively easy to reach by metro or taxi from Malaga I guess. I was thinking of staying in a hotel in Malaga, probably arriving Friday, in time for the pre-powwow-powwow... See more

I was thinking of staying in a hotel in Malaga, probably arriving Friday, in time for the pre-powwow-powwow and leaving Sunday. But I will have to check that out.

I´ll put my attendance to "yes" for the time being, and will keep you posted as the date approaches.

Would be great to meet you all there.

Regarding your stay, I would like to comment that, should you be open to this, and since the houses for rent in the area where I live are usually for 2 or more people, that maybe you could share a stay at one of the houses and just share the cost with a fellow powwower. For example, Paula, who just commented before you, is interested in staying in the neighborhood, so maybe you two could share a house (each would have their individual room, of course). Just an idea, but of course staying in Málaga is also a good idea (I believe Susan Starling will be staying in Malaga city, so you may wish to contact her for tips).

Anyway, I really hope you can make it. I also look forward to meeting you and having some good laughs together.

Liebe Grüsse,

Ivette

Hi again,

Just got details about possible houses for rent. Within my neighborhood:

http://holidays-villas.com/miguel.asp

In another area, relatively close by and with spectacular views:

http://www.idealista.com/pagina/inmueble?codigoinmueble=VW4973771

They are for 2-4 people, so the price for the weekend would depend on how many people can actually share the house. (Roughly, about 80 - 100 euros for the weekend, per person, so around 45-50 euros per night.)

Right now they are available, but this can change very quickly, as this is an area where holiday rental is popular.

In both cases I know the owners, so I can guarantee their reliability and house quality.

Again, this is just an idea, to share a house, but you definitely have other options in the area.

Saludos,

Ivette

Málaga hotels Mar 6, 2012

Hi Manuela, and anyone else thinking of staying in Málaga,

I can certainly recommend 1 or 2 places to stay in Málaga city.

Hi Manuela, and anyone else thinking of staying in Málaga,

I can certainly recommend 1 or 2 places to stay in Málaga city.

Here's a hotel I've stayed a couple of times that I find quite pleasant and conveniently located to everything including the train/bus station, though the immediate couple of blocks around it are nothing special. Last time I stayed there, just a few weeks ago, I paid €45 for a single and €50 for a double (without breakfast, but free coffee 24 hrs. in the lobby). Now I see however that the prices are up to €58/€64 on their website, but if you book via www.dimehoteles.com (which I often use for Spain hotels BTW) you can get a single for €52:

http://www.hotelbahiamalaga.com

I also found a hostel that offers private rooms with baths for €44 per night (also shared rooms for cheaper of course). It appears to be new and they don't have information up on their website yet, but again you can book via dimehoteles.com. I can't vouch for this place as I've never stayed there, but it's not too far from where I'll be staying in Calle de Carrión:

http://www.dimehoteles.com/hotel-en-Malaga-Casa-Al-Sur-h120056.htm

And this place here is probably the best located of all, right at Plaza Merced (and very close to where I'll be staying too) and they have singles with shared baths for €25, though again I haven't checked it out myself:

http://www.picassoscorner.hostel.com/

If you've got any questions I'm happy to help!

Looking forward to seeing everyone.

Susan

Trying to decide... Mar 25, 2012

Hi Ivette!

I'm just starting out as a freelance translator here in Spain. I live in Madrid, and I'm intersted in coming to this powwow. Before I can make a decision, I have a few questions:
What time of day will the BBQ start?
What are the options to get to Fuengirola from Malaga train station?
Anybody want to carpool from Madrid?

Thanks!
Hope

Hello Hope and Pedro,

Welcome! Thanks for your interest in the powwow.

The idea is to have a pre-powwow in Malaga city on Friday, April 20. Most likely we will meet at around 7 p.m. in front of Corte Inglés (Málaga city), and move from there towards the center of town, making various bar stops on the way, to have some drinks and tapas.

Then the next day (April 21), about the barbecue itself, here is a link to my place, which is located on Benalmádena, but almost next to Fuengirola (CARVAJAL beach area), where we will meet,

http://t.co/wUXZdNl9

The plan is to have a barbecue with some nice sea food/meat barbecue, veggies, beer, something sweet and, above all, nice music and laughs.

Though I had originally said to have the barbecue at 2 pm., I have given it more thought and have thought best to start at 6 pm, more like a dinner, because it may be too hot at 2. That way, people also have the rest of the day to go either to the beach or sight-seeing.

The idea is an informal meeting, though of course we may be able to network for business somehow, as we may obviously talk about work as well.

You are welcome to stay around longer, so we can improvise on-the-fly some other activities on the next days.

Hope, as you probably know (but saying it just in case), the drive by car from Madrid to this area is about 5-6 hours, depending on the number of stops and the traffic. Should you prefer not to drive, there are two other options: the bus (leaving from the main terminal bus station in Madrid, in the Méndez Alvaro area). The price is usually around 25 euros one way. (More info at http://www.movelia.es/ ). Then there is also the train, wonderful service from RENFE ( www.renfe.com ), as it is an AVE (fast train). The ticket price for round-trip varies, according to the time and day, but you can get it as low as 70 euros, if you take advantage of their special offers. The normal price is around 120 euros, though.

I wish someone else from Madrid were coming, hopefully to share the drive with you, but so far it looks like most people are from this area.

Anyway, just let me know if you need help with anything else.

Cheers,

Ivette
