It did happen once or twice in the few minutes it took me to grab a coffee. Otherwise, if I’m busy when the notification arrives I just postpone it; the annoying thing is when the notification is displayed every 15 minutes… | | | That's why I use Windows XP (though I have Windows 10) | Oct 7, 2018 |
Microsoft "lost it" somewhere between Windows XP and Vista. I tried them all, they never managed to release a worthy OS again since XP. My (desktop) computer boots with Windows XP by default. I tried them all, they never managed to release a worthy OS again since XP. My (desktop) computer boots with Windows XP by default. Everything works quickly and reliably, I can live without snazzy pyrotechnics on the screen, and without Big Brother learning about everything I do. Productivity soars. Alternatively, I can "honk" on F8 and boot the sluggish Windows 10 from another disk. All my data is on a third hard drive, so both versions of Windows have access to it. Both OS disks are SSDs, so closing one and rebooting on the other takes less than one minute. Both the data disk and its external backup are conventional HDDs. When I boot Windows XP, I can always start working immediately, without any surprises. When I boot Windows 10, on account of the few apps I use that have been rendered incompatible with XP, it is time for angst. Some features / drivers / hardware / may have been uninstalled or disabled by the last update; the most common being my internet connection. Quite often Windows 10 won't load immediately, but will go directly to some update, which may take anything from a few minutes to half a day - no prediction more accurate than "this may take a while" is provided. So I think that Microsoft having stopped "supporting" Windows XP is a GOOD thing! It is a stable, reliable, solid OS; I can troubleshoot and fix it in the rare cases when it's necessary. Meanwhile Windows 10 has more holes than a Swiss cheese, and they keep on trying to fix it. The worst is that Microsoft has NO RESPECT whatsoever for its users: they think the user's top priority is having their shaky OS jerry-rigged to its last fix. Other software is most likely developed by programmers who face the same newer-than-XP Windows issues I do, so they are respectful towards users. Whenever there is an update/upgrade available, they ASK me if I want to do it immediately, or tackle any more urgent matters first, and do it later. It's all a matter of respect for the end-user. Not all of us are gamers, some work for a living. ▲ Collapse | |

Often, but not all the time | Oct 7, 2018 |
And I have lost work because of it. My new computer just gave me a warning, which was nice. I'm about to close everything down. | | | Keeping up with updates | Oct 7, 2018 |

No, but I did have issues | Oct 8, 2018 |
I've had some serious issues a few times with updates that caused my PC to freeze or restart. They irritated me a lot, but never stopped me from working. They just made me waste time. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Have automatic operating system or software upgrades ever kept you from working?
