No (what is this new obsession with overnight?) Oct 26, 2019

I’m quite happy where I am. As I started out some 40 years ago as a generalist translator the subjects I’m familiar with include a wide variety (variety is the spice of life) but slowly and surely I have been specializing over the years. There are a few unfamiliar areas I will never venture in as I know my limits. But every now and then I can get a job that is outside my familiar areas and fortunately most texts I work with will have something new, even in the fields I master. It’s healthy... See more

It’s healthy to learn new things, isn’t it? If only I had more time I’d like to deepen my knowledge of certain areas, but not overnight. We all know that it’s not wise to prepare for a test the night before…Collapse

I would like to develop more practice in this field, but not at the price of abandoning the fields I work in.

Yes, to my other profesional fields Oct 26, 2019

On top of translation I am also a Psychologist and I am just finishing a master's degree in Criminology. I would love to develop an expertise in these fields.

Yes: Fiction Oct 27, 2019

I would love to move from non-fiction to fiction.

In my own experience, the books that I enjoy the most are those that make me forget about the world around me as I am completely sucked into a well-written story. If I am able to, I prefer to read such books in the original language, but a good translation is also acceptable, as long as you don't notice that it's a translation!

I would like to go deeper into some of my current areas of expertise and possibly add more, but I wouldn't give up the ones I have.

I basically only work in fields I find interesting. There are probably things I'm interested in that I have never or seldom translated in. I would happily do more translations in the environmental sector. But I'm very happy with what I do (mainly arts music fashion textiles tourism gastronomy).

Not in a million years Oct 28, 2019

Simply because I've tried two other areas for 20 years, and I finally chose translation (a lot later than I should have). I'll never switch again. I found what I was looking for all my life.
