(Por Emilio García Ladona y Joaquim Ballabrera Poy) Recurrentemente oímos noticias sobre el aumento del nivel del mar y la amenaza que ello supone para una población mundial cada vez más localizada en las zonas litorales, especialmente para los doscientos millones de humanos que viven a menos de 5 m de altura respecto el nivel del mar. ¿Pero qué procesos influencian en el nivel del mar? ¿Y qué sabemos hoy en día sobre la tendencia futura? Los procesos que determinan el nivel del mar en cada región son múltiples y actúan en diferentes escalas de tiempo. El agua está repartida alrededor de diferentes compartimentos. En la atmósfera en forma de gas y pequeñas gotas en las nubes; en la litosfera en aguas freáticas, ríos, lagos, acuíferos incluyendo reservorios artificiales de origen antropogénico; en la criosfera, en las capas de hielo de la Antártida, del Ártico y Groenlandia y glaciares continentales. Sin embargo, los reservorios de agua por excelencia son los mares y océanos. Así en gran medida la cantidad de agua en las cuencas oceánicas determina el nivel medio del mar. Hay dos formas de medir el nivel del mar. Una consistiría en la medición del grosor de la columna de agua en un punto, tal y como se ha realizado históricamente con ayuda de mareógrafos en las zonas costeras. Sin embargo, a partir del lanzamiento de los primeros satélites dotados de altímetros (i.e. TOPEX-Poseidon) se puede medir la variación de la superficie del mar en referencia a un nivel de equilibrio asociado al campo gravitatorio terrestre. Es decir, aquella superficie cuyos puntos tienen la misma energía potencial gravitatoria. Si la Tierra fuera perfectamente redonda esta superficie sería también una esfera alrededor de la Tierra. Imaginemos una cebolla esférica, una superficie equipotencial sería una capa de esa cebolla a una distancia determinada del centro. Cada capa de la cebolla sería una superficie equipotencial y el nivel del mar tendría la misma forma. Sin embargo, la Tierra ni es redonda, ni su composición de materiales es homogénea y rota alrededor de su eje, por lo que las superficies equipotenciales distan mucho de ser esféricas. Las reconstrucciones más precisas que se han realizado hasta ahora se han obtenido a través de la misión GOCE de la Agencia Espacial Europea en 2011 (ver figura 1). Se pueden apreciar separaciones de hasta 200 m de altura entre diferentes áreas del globo. Para entendernos, un objeto colocado al Sur de Ceilán tiene la misma energía potencial que un objeto situado al Oeste de Irlanda, pero entre ellos hay una diferencia de altura de unos 150 m. El nivel del mar como respuesta a este campo gravitatorio debiera tener una forma aproximada al geoide. Sin embargo, hay muchos otros factores que hacen que el nivel del mar instantáneo se separe del geoide. Y estos procesos tienen una variabilidad característica que produce variaciones apreciables del nivel del mar a escalas de tiempo que abarcan desde las pocas horas hasta los millones de años. Uno de los factores más evidentes que contribuyen a la variación del nivel del mar es el aporte de agua a las cuencas oceánicas que tiene que ver básicamente con la conexión de los diferentes reservorios de agua: descargas de ríos proveniente de precipitaciones y deshielo, precipitaciones directas sobre el mar y deshielo de casquetes polares de hielo. Sin embargo, las aportaciones más relevantes son los glaciares continentales que abocan masas de hielo directamente al mar y las capas de hielo continental en la Antártida y Groenlandia básicamente. A menudo, todavía hay gente que asocia el deshielo del Ártico con las variaciones del nivel del mar, pero eso es rotundamente erróneo. Una masa de hielo en agua retiene el mismo volumen total de agua debido al principio de Arquímedes. Así solamente casquetes de hielo sobre tierra firme tienen una contribución neta a ello. El último informe de IPCC Panel (AR5) completado en el 2014 es un buen texto de referencia para conocer el estado del arte del conocimiento que tenemos sobre el nivel del mar y de los distintos procesos causantes de su evolución. Las reconstrucciones que disponemos indican un aumento relativamente "rápido" del nivel del mar desde el último máximo glacial (~20.000 a.c), unos 125 m hasta el valor actual que se establece alrededor de 2000 a.c. Al final del periodo conocido como Pequeña Edad de Hielo, ("Little Ice Age") entre mitad del siglo XIV y mediados del XIX, durante el cual el nivel del mar había bajado unos 15-18 cm, el nivel del mar empezó a aumentar progresivamente hasta nuestros días, unos 18-20 cm por encima del periodo pre-industrial (ver figura 1). Las últimas reconstrucciones estiman que la contribución de los hielos en Groenlandia y Antártida es del orden de 0.6 mm/año durante el periodo 1993-2010 que es un periodo donde se tiene mejores medidas gracias a una mejora de los programas de observación. La dinámica del hielo de los casquetes polares es muy compleja y depende del balance entre la acumulación de nieve, el deshielo (mayormente superficial) y el flujo de hielo saliente sobre el mar o directamente por desprendimiento directo y brusco de icebergs ("ice calving"). En el caso de Groenlandia las pérdidas de masa de hielo se redistribuyen aproximadamente por igual entre el deshielo en superficie y el desprendimiento sobre el mar. En el caso de la Antártida las temperaturas son muy bajas y básicamente el hielo se pierde fluyendo hacia la plataforma continental donde forma una cobertura de hielo que posteriormente va desprendiéndose en sus partes más externas y se va fundiendo por debajo en contacto con el agua. Estas plataformas de hielo apenas contribuyen al nivel del mar ya que están flotando sobre el agua sin embargo pueden indirectamente acelerar o frenar el flujo de hielo desde las zonas de acumulación como intentaremos ilustrar más adelante. Para la cobertura de hielo en Groenlandia se da la paradoja que ha habido un aumento de acumulación de nieve en la zona interior pero también ha aumentado el deshielo superficial y el desprendimiento de manera que el balance neto indica una pérdida de la masa de hielo. En este último caso parece que el responsable sería un cambio regional de la circulación alrededor de Groenlandia, que permite la intrusión de agua más caliente favoreciendo este proceso. No está claro si estos cambios de circulación están relacionados con la variabilidad interdecadal de la Oscilación del Atlántico Norte (NAO por sus siglas en inglés) o una tendencia asociada con el calentamiento asociado a los gases de efecto invernadero. Las proyecciones de los modelos a lo largo de este siglo indican que el descuadre entre acumulación y pérdida podría continuar a lo largo del siglo XXI. Hay que notar, sin embargo, que la recongelación del agua deshelada en las capas más altas de la capa de hielo es un mecanismo que podría reducir la pérdida de masa, mientras que por el contrario un incremento del deshielo superficial podría facilitar la lubricación de la base del hielo favoreciendo un aumento de la pérdida de masa. Así, las proyecciones sobre el aumento del nivel del mar por la contribución del hielo polar varían entre los 2 cm y 23 cm a finales de siglo. La dinámica de estos mecanismos no parece estar afectada por transiciones bruscas que hicieran pensar en un colapso de la masa de hielo de Groenlandia que diera lugar a cambios importantes y bruscos del nivel del mar. Sin embargo, los modelos conceptuales parecen indicar la existencia de una barrera para la temperatura que si se sobrepasara durante suficiente tiempo (miles de años) la pérdida de hielo sería irreversible en estas escalas de tiempo incluso aunque el clima reestableciera su estado entretanto. En ese caso la contribución sería equivalente a un aumento del nivel del mar de 7 m. Intentos de modelar el Plioceno (5-6 millones de años a.c.), cuando se daban temperaturas y niveles de CO2 similares a los actuales, indican que temperaturas de 2-3.5ºC superiores a los niveles pre-industriales producen una desaparición casi completa de la capa de hielo (IPCC, 2013, a partir del trabajo de Hill et al. 2010). Sin embargo, estos valores deben tomarse con precaución dado que la situación climática del Plioceno a escala regional no es comparable según un estudio reciente de los propios autores (Hill, 2014). En el caso del hielo Antártico la situación es diferente. Al igual que en Groenlandia la cantidad de masa de hielo responde a un balance entre la acumulación de nieve y el flujo de hielo hacia zonas más periféricas en contacto con el mar circundante en escalas milenarias. A diferencia de Groenlandia, la Antártida tiene temperaturas superficiales más frías que no inciden en el deshielo superficial y las pérdidas se producen mayormente por desprendimiento de icebergs sobre el mar (ice calving) y por mezcla submarina.	Translation - English What would happen if the polar icecaps melted? Can the continuing thaw be blamed on human activity? (By Emilio García Ladona and Joaquim Ballabrera Poy) We regularly hear news reports about rising sea levels, and the threat they present to a global population that is becoming progressively more concentrated in coastal areas – in particular to the 200 million people who live less than 5 metres above sea level. But what processes influence world sea levels? Where are current trends leading? There are multiple processes that determine sea level in various parts of the world, and they work on different timescales. The Earth's water is distributed in distinct "compartments". In the atmosphere it exists in gaseous form, or in small droplets that form clouds; in the lithosphere it is found as groundwater, rivers, lakes and aquifers, including man-made reservoirs; in the cryosphere it constitutes the Antarctic, Arctic and Greenland icecaps, and continental glaciers. But above all of these, the supreme natural water reserves are the seas and oceans. Therefore, to a large extent, the quantity of water contained in the oceanic basins determines the mean sea level. There are two methods used to measure sea level, one of which involves measuring the water column depth at a specified point. This has historically been carried out using tide gauges in coastal waters. Since the launch of the first satellites equipped with altimeters (TOPEX/Poseidon, for example), it has also been possible to measure sea surface variation by referring to an equilibrium level derived from Earth's gravitational field. This equilibrium level comprises the sea surface where the same gravitational potential energy is measured at all points. If the Earth were perfectly round, this surface would also be a perfect sphere, wrapped around the Earth. If we imagine an onion which happens to be spherical, an equipotential surface would be a layer of the onion at a fixed distance from its centre. Each layer of the onion would be an equipotential surface, and sea level would take the same form. However, the Earth is not round, nor is its material composition homogeneous - and it rotates around its axis, causing its equipotential surfaces to be far from spherical. To date, the most accurate reconstructions carried out are from data collected by the European Space Agency's GOCE mission in 2011 (see figure 1). Differences in elevation of up to 200m are apparent between different areas of the Earth's surface. To illustrate this, an object situated to the South of Sri Lanka has the same potential energy as an object placed to the West of Ireland, but between them there is a difference in elevation of about 150m. Responding to this gravitational field, sea level should take a form that approximates to the geoid. But there are many additional factors that cause instantaneous sea level to deviate from the geoid. These processes display characteristic variability and cause significant variations in sea level, on timescales that range from a few hours to millions of years. One of the most obvious factors contributing to sea level variation is the supply of water to oceanic basins that comes from the Earth's other water reserves: river discharge resulting from precipitation and thawing, direct precipitation on the sea and thawing of polar icecaps. However, the most relevant inputs are from continental glaciers that deposit masses of ice directly into the sea, and the continental icecaps in Antarctica and Greenland. Many people still link the Arctic thaw with sea level variation, but this is a false association. An ice mass floating in water maintains the same total water volume, according to Archimedes' principle. Therefore, only the melting of icecaps situated on dry land can make a net contribution to the total water volume. The latest report from the IPPC (AR5), completed in 2014, gives a valuable insight into the level of knowledge so far attained on sea level, and the diverse processes that cause it to change over time. Reconstructions currently available indicate a relatively 'rapid' sea level rise since the Last Glacial Maximum (around 20,000 BC) of about 125m up to the current level, which was reached at around 2000 BC. At the end of the period known as the "Little Ice Age" between the mid-14th century and the mid-19th century, during which sea level had receded by 15 to 18 cm, it began a progressive rise until the present day – reaching levels of 18 to 20 cm above those recorded in the pre-industrial period (see figure 1). In the latest reconstructions, it is estimated that the contribution from the Greenland and Antarctic icecaps is about 0.6mm per year during the period from 1993 up to 2010, when more accurate measurements were obtained due to the introduction of improved observation programmes. The dynamics of the polar icecaps are highly complex and depend on the balance between snow accumulation, melting (mainly surface) and outgoing ice flow forming an ice shelf on the sea surface, or directly breaking off into the sea to form icebergs (ice calving). In the case of Greenland, loss of ice mass is distributed more or less evenly between surface melting and ice calving. In the case of Antarctica, with its very low temperatures, ice flows towards the continental shelf. Here it forms an ice shelf, the outer parts of which eventually calve, and the underside of which begins to melt on contact with seawater. These ice shelves have little impact on sea level, as they float on the sea surface – however, they can indirectly speed up or slow down the flow of ice from accumulation zones, as will be illustrated later. Paradoxically, while in the interior of the Greenland Ice Sheet there have been increased accumulations of snow, surface melting and calving has also increased to the extent that there has been a net loss of ice mass. The cause appears to be a regional change in the sea circulation around Greenland, allowing an intrusion of warmer water that encourages this process. It is not clear whether these changes in circulation are linked to the interdecadal variability of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), or a trend associated with warming caused by greenhouse gases. Projected climate models indicate that the imbalance between ice accumulation and loss may continue for the rest of the 21st century. It is worth noting that refreezing of meltwater on the highest layers of the ice sheet is a mechanism that can reduce loss of ice mass. Nevertheless, increased surface melting may contribute to lubricating the ice sheet bed, exacerbating the problem. In view of this, projections of sea level rise caused by the melting of polar ice vary between 2cm and 23cm by the end of the century. The dynamics of these mechanisms do not appear to be experiencing the kind of abrupt transitions that would signal an imminent collapse of the Greenland Ice Sheet, causing sudden major changes to sea level. However, conceptual models appear to indicate the existence of a temperature limit that if exceeded over a sufficient period of time (thousands of years), ice loss would be irreversible within a similar timescale, even if the climate returned to its former state in the meantime. In this case, the contribution to sea level rise would be equivalent to 7m. Attempts at modelling the Pliocene (5-6 million BC, when temperatures and CO2 levels were similar to the present day) indicate that temperatures from 2ºC to 3.5ºC higher than pre-industrial levels lead to the almost total disappearance of the icecap (IPCC 2013, from studies undertaken by Hill et al., 2010). Nevertheless, these figures should be taken with a degree of caution, given that the climatic situation in the Pliocene on a regional scale is not comparable to the global model mentioned above – according to a recent study by the same authors (Hill, 2014). In the case of the Antarctic icecap the situation is different. As in Greenland, the quantity of ice mass responds to a balance between snow accumulation and ice flow towards peripheral zones in contact with the surrounding sea, on a timescale of millennia. In contrast with Greenland, Antarctica experiences lower temperatures that do not favour surface melting, and the loss of ice mass is caused mainly by iceberg calving and submarine mixing.

E’ una costruzione imponente a tre piani, che tocca i 25 metri d’altezza, circondata da vasti ed eleganti giardini all’italiana realizzati nella prima metà del Settecento. Come una straordinaria balconata si affaccia sull’intera arcata di colline riconosciute come Patrimonio dell’Umanità dall’Unesco, dal Monferrato a Verduno, ricoperte da vigneti celebri fra i quali spuntano castelli, torri e paesi. Dall’altro lato guarda sulle alture del Roero e sulla catena delle Alpi. È stato abitato per decine di generazioni dai Roero di Guarene, della Vezza e di Piobesi, una importante famiglia dell’aristocrazia piemontese. Nel 1899 passò per eredità ai Provana di Collegno. La sua lunga storia ne fa un archivio di memorie e un museo di architettura, di pittura e di arti decorative. Passato nel 2011 ad altra proprietà, è stato destinato ad una nuova vocazione che combina l’assoluto rispetto del valore museale con una ospitalità di alto livello. Gli interventi di restauro conservativo e di adeguamento sono durati tre anni. Carlo Giacinto Roero di Guarene, personaggio centrale della storia del castello, era un architetto dilettante, in relazione con l’architetto di Corte Filippo Juvarra, al quale si deve il progetto della facciata. Dopo la posa della prima pietra nel 1726 il 13 settembre ore 20 e mezza, Carlo Giacinto seguì l’edificazione e l’arredamento, non ancora terminati nel 1749 al momento della sua morte, in parte di presenza e in parte a distanza: nei mesi invernali impartiva per lettera da Torino quotidiane e minuziose istruzioni al capo-mastro che sovrintendeva al cantiere. Tra le particolarità di Guarene, c’è anche quella di essere un castello costruito “per corrispondenza”. La grandiosa opera arrivò al completamento nella seconda metà del secolo, grazie ai figli Traiano e Teodoro. Il re Vittorio Amedeo III con la regina venne a visitarla nel 1773, e il castello è pieno di ricordi di quell’avvenimento. IL GIARDINO Iniziato nel 1740, realizzato su progetto del Conte Carlo Giacinto Roero di Guarene insieme al giardiniere del Castello di Govone. La disposizione scenografica delle spalliere di carpini, dei taxus modellati a pinnacoli e dei cipressi moltiplica sapientemente il piccolo spazio a disposizione. Nelle cronache si narra la presenza, in tempi antichi, di cinque pavoni – fatto strano per l’epoca e la zona. Al livello inferiore, sul lato del castello rivolto verso la vallata del Tanaro e verso Barbaresco, si trova un altro giardino formale, denominato “Maneggio”, dove basse siepi di carpino delimitano aiuole di forme geometriche diverse, disposte simmetricamente rispetto all’asse centrale del giardino. La recente ristrutturazione ha riportato il giardino all’originario splendore. LE CAMERE Otto grandi camere da letto, battezzate con nomi di personaggi storici, accolgono gli ospiti al terzo piano. Altre quattro si trovano al pian terreno. Gli ambienti, nel rispetto della planimetria e delle decorazioni affrescate, sono stati ristrutturati e dotati di sale da bagno rivestite in marmi prestigiosi. Le tappezzerie, in seta e velluto di seta, sono state applicate alle pareti mediante telai imbottiti di mollettone come nelle grandi dimore patrizie dei secoli scorsi. Sono tutti d’epoca gli arredi, in massima parte originari del castello, in parte provenienti dalle collezioni dei nuovi proprietari Artusio e Gallo. Gli ospiti hanno quindi intorno a sé l’ambiente in cui viveva un nobile del Settecento e nello stesso tempo gli strumenti più avanzati del comfort del nostro tempo. Ogni camera è dotata di domotica, televisore a LED, SKY Gold Vision, cassaforte, minibar, Internet Wi-Fi. Nella struttura si può inoltre usufruire di un servizio di parrucchiere, massaggi ed estetista. LO CHEF Si chiama Davide Odore ed è nato vedi caso a Guarene, e per di più nella strada intitolata ad Alessandro Roero, ultimo della nobile casata. Perciò non ha fatto alcuno sforzo per calarsi nello spirito del castello, che è nello stesso tempo storia antica e favola moderna. Nonostante i 32 anni, ha lunga esperienza in Roero e in Langa, e occhio allargato – ma non troppo – alla cultura culinaria italiana, francese e perfino anglosassone, attraverso la rockstar dei fornelli Marco Pierre White. Far rivivere la storia significa per lui risuscitare l’antico stile della sua terra, per il quale il cibo era frutto di fatica e benedizione di Dio da celebrare in fraternità nelle occasioni memorabili. Ha un obiettivo: ogni piatto, che corrisponde ad un sogno suo, deve essere un sogno per l’ignoto destinatario che lo aspetta. Ha un metodo: lavorare e ancora lavorare. Al riparo dal divismo di cui oggi il suo mestiere fa ammalare troppo facilmente. Sulla porta del ristorante che aveva prima di salire a Guarene c’è un cartello in cui è scritto “FUCINA” anziché “CUCINA”. Il 90 per cento della sua vita – lo dichiara egli stesso – è riempito dall’obiettivo di ripristinare in tavola l’antica eccellenza delle materie prime e di reinventare ciò che è già stato inventato, aggiungendogli un inedito dentro e una luce fuori. Ha in casa trecento libri di cucina, ma ne trae ispirazioni, non ricette. Ha dei riferimenti più che dei maestri. Rispetto ad ognuno si fa un punto d’onore di tentare sempre di alzare l’asticella. Dice: poiché ogni piatto, anche il più semplice, può essere un capolavoro, deve essere un capolavoro. Senza le scorciatoie cervellotiche e i funambolismi frivoli, portatore delle certezze della terra e della fantasia di un giovane di oggi. Le sue creazioni stupiscono ogni volta senza sbalordire mai. Cucina piemontese? Italiana? Francese? Internazionale? Se gli si fa questa domanda, risponde a bassa voce: “Buona”. Ricercata? Popolare? Ripete: “Buona”. In ogni piatto che esce dalla grande cucina dell’aristocratico castello c’è l’impronta della più difficile delle aristocrazie: quella delle emozioni. MENU Menu alla carta, menu tradizione, Menu degustazione, Menu tartufo e carta dei vini DIMORA STORICA La dimora storica - Il Cuore del Castello di Guarene Nelle sale di rappresentanza del piano nobile del Castello, le più importanti sul piano artistico e perciò le più strettamente tutelate, sono stati compiuti soltanto interventi di restauro conservativo, preceduti da studi storici e saggi stratigrafici diretti dalla Soprintendenza. Gli ambienti più significativi sono 15, distribuiti sui due lati del salone centrale: sono il cuore della casa-museo che è il castello di Guarene. Quando l’ospite di oggi si aggirerà nei quindici ambienti storici distribuiti sui due lati del Salone d’onore, vedrà intorno a sé le stesse cose che caddero allora sotto gli occhi della regale coppia. La Stanza del Vescovo, intatta, continua ad offrire uno degli esempi più spettacolari di “bandera”, a fantasiosi disegni ricamati con lane policrome su un particolare tessuto di cotone. Altrettanto la Camera Azzurra, dove i ricami in “bandera” sono stilizzati in esili ghirlande e cespi floreali. Chi sosterà nelle due Sale Cinesi, festosamente ricoperte di “carte alla China”, pensi che quelle tappezzerie furono fatte venire dall’Oriente nella seconda metà del Settecento attraverso Londra e un viaggio per mare fino a Marsiglia, e di qui trasportate a dorso di mulo al castello. Sono ancora lì, perfettamente conservate, in buona compagnia con i tessuti in seta del letto a baldacchino, decorati a motivi orientali. E poi, alzando gli occhi alle volte affrescate della Sala da pranzo e della Galleria, gli ospiti del castello potranno fare il paragone con quelle della Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi, e rendersi conto che i soffitti di Guarene non ne sono affatto distanti in bellezza. Deliziosa anche la volta ottocentesca della Sala della musica. Quanto ai dipinti nelle sovrapporte e alle pareti, formano nell’insieme una vera e propria pinacoteca, tutt’altro che di second’ordine. Parecchie tele sorprendono per la loro importanza, come la bellissima Madonna della Cappella e i paesaggi di Scipione e di Vittorio Amedeo Cignaroli. E poi c’è una ricchezza tutta da esplorare per i curiosi del passato: un’ottantina di personaggi, principi, re, prelati, dame e cavalieri, eccezionale galleria di volti, di storie, di memorie inedite. Non ultima attrattiva per le signore: gli abiti delle dame danno vita ad una vera e propria rassegna della moda femminile aristocratica nel Sei e Settecento. Il castello offre anche un percorso attraverso bei mobili antichi, dalle cassepanche intagliate del secolo XVII ai raffinati esemplari Louis XVI. Una meraviglia per gli intenditori, ma anche uno spettacolo per tutti, è la biblioteca che ha accumulato nei secoli centinaia di libri in preziose legature. Parecchi dei volumi sono in esemplare unico. LE CAMERE 1 VITTORIA DI REVELLO Castle Deluxe Room, 60 mq, vista sul Roero e le Alpi La camera è tutta rossa, come il colore del mantello con cui la giovane fu dipinta tre secoli fa da una ritrattista alla moda. Vittoria era una Roero, del ramo di Revello. Un Roero era il marito, Carlo Giacinto, signore di Guarene. Perciò stemmi uguali affiancanti a celebrare le nozze, appena incominciato il Settecento. Gli sposi non ebbero molto tempo per stare insieme, allietati dal primo figlio nato nel 1702. La guerra che imperversava in Europa sconvolgeva anche il Piemonte, e Carlo Giacinto era quasi sempre lontano da casa, al comando di una compagnia di Dragoni. Ne era appena uscito, dopo aver combattuto nella epica battaglia di Torino del 7 settembre 1706, quando la bella castellana lo lasciò per sempre, vittima del secondo parto. Era stato un grande amore: per tutta la vita il Conte ne conserverà gelosamente i ricordi. 2 LUISA DI MONTUE' Castle deluxe room, 60 mq, con vista sul Roero e le Alpi Luisa è nel 1711 la nuova moglie del vedovo non più inconsolabile Carlo Giacinto Roero. È una Valperga, casato illustrissimo ma ramo collaterale meno noto, quello di Montué e Mazzé. In otto anni mette al mondo quattro figli e poi muore, trentenne, nel 1719. Un dipinto la ritrae in splendido abito grigio e blu ornato da una quantità di pietre preziose, e gioielli nei capelli. 3 ISABELLA DI PIOZZO Castle suite, 80 mq, angolare con vista su Roero, Alpi e Monferrato Terza moglie di Carlo Giacinto Roero, nel 1722. Questa volta sono passati solo tre anni dalla perdita della consorte precedente. Il Conte ha 47 anni, Isabella 22 ed è già vedova. Carlo Giacinto seppellirà anche lei, quindici anni dopo. Arrivano altri tre figli. Isabella è accanto al marito negli anni della costruzione del castello di Guarene, ed è dama d’onore della Regina. La sua memoria è affidata ad un ritratto che la raffigura con un raffinato abito rosa, oro e azzurro, sobrio di ornamenti. 4 TRAIANO ANDREA Castle luxury room, 100 mq, con vista su Roero, Alpi e Monferrato Grandioso, sontuoso, caratterizzato dal segno architettonico di un arcone che lo percorre da un lato all’altro, l’ambiente rispecchia il senso della grandeur seicentesca di Traiano, padre di Carlo Giacinto. Gelosissimo delle prerogative nobiliari, in continuo conflitto con tutti per riaffermarle, intransigente, sdegnoso: un aristocratico di campagna che incuteva timore reverenziale, un padre-padrone, un marito tutt’altro che tenero. Ma anche un personaggio di orizzonti non provinciali: visse arroccato nel suo castello (che era ancora quello medievale), disdegnò il palazzo che aveva comprato a Torino, e nello stesso tempo fece lunghi viaggi (d’affari) in Italia e in Europa. Potrebbe essere un emblema della solida e un po’ arcigna aristocrazia terriera piemontese del XVII secolo. Morì a 82 anni, tanti per la sua epoca. 5 CONTESSA MADRE Castle deluxe room 50 mq con vista su Roero, Alpi e Monferrato Così si chiama nelle grandi Case la veneranda moglie del capo-famiglia. Il termine sa di matriarcato, ma nulla è meno vero nel caso di Lucrezia Delfina Tana d’Entracque, alla quale è intitolata la camera. La moglie dell’altero Traiano Roero di Guarene, e madre di Carlo Giacinto, aveva un carattere sensibile e sottomesso – lo si legge nel suo ritratto – che la teneva lontana da ogni tentazione di comando: la quale peraltro sarebbe stata temeraria con un marito dispotico come quello che si ritrovava. Era anche cagionevole di salute, e il figlio che la amava teneramente si adoperava a curarla con le sanguisughe e i ripugnanti intrugli della farmacopea dell’epoca. Eppure la fragile dama aveva conosciuto momenti di mondanità. Come dama d’onore di Madama Reale Giovanna Battista, aveva accompagnato i Reali e la Corte nel viaggio a Palermo, partecipando alle feste con cui Vittorio Amedeo II era stato accolto come nuovo Re di Sicilia e alla sua solenne incoronazione nel Duomo palermitano la vigilia di Natale dell’anno 1713. 6 PRINCIPE EUGENIO Castle deluxe room, 55 mq, vista sull’intero arco delle colline dichiarate patrimonio dell’Umanità dall’Unesco Nella storia sabauda ci sono tre mitici condottieri, raffigurati in altrettante statue all’ingresso del Palazzo Reale di Torino: il Duca Emanuele Filiberto, l’Ammiraglio Andrea Provana di Leinì e il Principe Eugenio. Il quale era un Savoia-Soissons e combatté per gli Asburgo d’Austria, che gli erano debitori non solo di decine di vittorie ma anche della fondazione del loro potere militare. Ciò non toglie che in Piemonte fosse considerato un compatriota, la cui gloria salì alle stelle quando Eugenio arrivò con trentamila soldati a liberare Torino dall’assedio franco-spagnolo del 1706. Sbaragliando insieme a Vittorio Amedeo II l’esercito del Re Sole, il “Gran Capitano”, come era chiamato, capovolse gli equilibri politici europei a favore degli Asburgo. Carlo Giacinto Roero era fra i combattenti di quella battaglia e la ricordò in alcune lettere che ne sono tra le più commosse testimonianze. 7 CARLO GIACINTO Castle Luxury Room 75 mq, con vista dal Monferrato alle Langhe Unesco e sul giardino-labirinto del castello Non c’è castello così legato al suo signore come quello di Guarene a Carlo Giacinto Roero: il quale lo costruì, da architetto dilettante qual’era, lo fece affrescare e arredare da artisti di cui era mecenate, ne riempì di libri la biblioteca e di scritti l’archivio, lo animò di relazioni con il mondo culturale e musicale italiano. Trovando anche il tempo, negli oltre 40 vissuti dopo il ritiro dall’esercito, di gestire le terre di famiglia, allora estese dalle colline al Tanaro, di dar vita alla fabbrica della maiolica dei Rossetti, di dirigere la benefica Casa del Soccorso della Compagnia di San Paolo. E per di più di passare le serate alternando conti, lettere, disegni e concertini di violoncello. Carlo Giacinto Roero, che era nato nel 1675 e morì nel 1749, è il tipico esponente di una classe nobile piemontese non parassitaria, ma dotata di spirito imprenditoriale e di operosità artistica. La stanza che ne porta il nome riflette il carattere del personaggio in fatto di solennità ed eleganza. 8 TERESA GABRIELLA CARESANA DI CARISIO Castle Luxury Suite, 200 mq, con diversi affacci su Monferrato, Langhe, giardino all’italiana e giardino-labirinto del castello Teresa arrivò giovanissima al castello, al seguito della madre vedova che sposava il Conte Traiano Giuseppe, primogenito di Carlo Giacinto. Vi portò un’aria nuova, di eleganza briosa e di estri artistici: la stessa che nella seconda metà del Settecento si diffondeva dalla Francia al Piemonte e all’Italia. Suonava il cembalo così bene che musicisti celebri come Pugnani le dedicarono composizioni, mentre i poeti verseggiavano in suo onore. Il giardino, nel quale un tempo razzolavano galline e porci, si popolò di pavoni e la contessina vi si divertiva a tirar con l’arco. Un’intera ala del castello si trasformava secondo lo stile di moda, con tappezzerie cinesi e arredi raffinati. Finì per sposare il fratello del patrigno, il Conte Teodoro Giuseppe e di dominare la vita di Guarene a pieno titolo di Contessa Roero. L’attuale salotto della suite, rimasto uguale nel tempo, era la sua camera e conserva il letto di giovinetta, insieme al ritratto in cui appare abbigliata con trionfale e squisita eleganza. Nell’altro ambiente, la camera da letto, i tessuti “alla cinese” del grande letto a baldacchino, le preziose tappezzerie e ogni altro arredo sono integralmente originali. E’ la suite di Guarene in cui l’ospite si trova più strettamente a tu per tu con le testimonianze del passato. 9 ABATE DI GUARENE Classic 40 mq con terrazzo privato e vista sulle colline del Roero e sulla catena delle Alpi Un religioso non manca mai tra i rampolli delle casate nobili, come non mancano le figlie consacrate al convento dalla volontà del Signore, o meglio della famiglia ( e tra i Roero non si contano le monache). La storia dell’Abate di Guarene, Giuseppe Maria Ignazio, fratello di Carlo Giacinto, è però più intrigante del solito, perché ad un certo punto della vita, non più giovanissimo, decise di gettare l’abito alle ortiche. Che già si fosse innamorato, o che si innamorasse dopo, poco conta. Il fatto è che lo ritroviamo non solo ridotto allo stato laicale, ma anche sposo. Naturalmente di una nobile, la figlia del Marchese Ceva di Nucetto. L’archivio dei Roero non reca traccia di come la cosa sia stata accolta in famiglia. 10 CAPITANO DEI DRAGONI ROSSI Castle Room 60 mq, con terrazzo privato, vista sulle colline del Roero e sulla catena delle Alpi Il nome rievoca la vita militare di Carlo Giacinto Roero, durata meno di dieci anni a partire dal 1697 quando entrò nella famosa Accademia Reale di Torino. I privilegi nobiliari non gli risparmiarono di incominciare dal grado più basso degli ufficiali, il “cornetta”, il portatore dello stendardo del Reggimento, e di avere un soldo così basso che non gli sarebbe bastato per la sopravvivenza senza il sostegno della famiglia, sia pure elargito con il contagocce. In quattro anni arrivò al grado di capitano e al comando di una compagnia di Dragoni, soldati scelti che si spostavano a cavallo e combattevano a piedi, prima nel Reggimento del Genevese (il territorio a sud di Ginevra allora sabaudo), poi in quello prestigioso dei Dragoni di Sua Altezza Reale. Dal colore del giustacorpo, questi ultimi erano chiamati “Dragoni Rossi”. 11 IL CAVALIERE DI MALTA Castle Room 60 mq con terrazzo privato, vista sulle colline del Roero e sulla catena delle Alpi Il Cavaliere di Malta è un fratello di Carlo Giacinto, di nome Pietro Francesco. Grazie a lui un filo ideale collega il palazzo di Guarene alla lontana isola mediterranea. Infatti Pietro Francesco solcò i mari al comando di una galea sulla quale sventolava la croce di Malta, bianca in campo rosso, con legittimo orgoglio dei familiari. Il Cavaliere si costruì una casa nell’isola allorché diventò una autorità nell’Ordine. L’edificio è noto ancor oggi come Guarena Palace, ma non vi si trova più traccia dei dipinti, delle maioliche e degli arredi che Carlo Giacinto spediva da Torino al fratello “marinaio”, dispersi chissà dove. 12 MARCHESA DI SAN TOMMASO Castle Room 60 mq con terrazzo privato, vista sulle colline del Roero e sulla catena delle Alpi Non si sa se il matrimonio di Paola Beatrice Roero, zia di Carlo Giacinto, sia stato un affare di cuore o di interessi. Certo è che imparentandosi con un Carron di San Tommaso i Guarene fecero un bel colpo. Lui era Carlo Giuseppe Vittorio, figlio di Francesco Guglielmo potentissimo Primo Segretario di Stato del Duca di Savoia, detto tout court “il Marchese di San Tommaso”. L’incarico, così come il Collare dell’Annunziata, era quasi ereditario in famiglia, e lo ricoprì anche il figlio, marito di Beatrice, la quale venne a essere designata a sua volta “Marchesa di San Tommaso”. Il dipinto che la ritrae ha una antica etichetta che la definisce così, e ci mostra una dama tanto elegante quanto non particolarmente bella. In comune con il nipote Carlo Giacinto ha di sicuro una cosa: il naso importante. A castle or palace has dominated Guarene from its hill for seven centuries. In the Medieval era, a fortress stood on this site. It commands an unequalled panorama of the whole chain of the Langhe hills from Monferrato to Verduno - this landscape, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, is covered with renowned vineyards and dotted with castles, towers and villages. In the other direction, it looks out onto the Roero heights and towards the distant Alps. Across the generations, the palace has been home to the Guarene, La Vezza and Piobesi branches of the Roero family, which occupied a position of high status in the Piedmontese aristocracy. In 1889 it was inherited by the Provana family from Collegno. Its long history is documented in an extensive archive and displayed in a museum of architecture, painting and decorative arts. In 2011 Castello di Guarene came under new ownership, and was destined for a new role combining top-level hospitality with continued respect for its value as a unique piece of heritage. Three years of restoration and conversion followed. A central figure in the palace's history, Carlo Giacinto Roero di Guarene was an amateur architect who worked alongside court architect Filippo Juvarra, responsible for the design of the façade. From the laying of the first stone at 8.30 in the evening on 13 September 1726, Carlo Giacinto directed all the construction and interior furnishing work - which would not be completed until after his death in 1749 - either on site or, in the winter months, by means of minutely detailed instructions sent daily by letter from Turin to the master mason in charge. Castello di Guarene can therefore lay claim to the distinction of being a palace built "via correspondence". This grandiose project was finally completed in the second half of the century by Roero's sons Traiano and Teodoro. King Vittorio Amedeo III of Sardinia and the queen paid a royal visit in 1773 – the palace is full of mementoes of the occasion. THE GARDENS The gardens were started in 1740, and laid out according to Count Carlo Giacinto Roero di Guarene's design by the master gardener of Castello di Govone. The scenic layout of hornbeam espaliers, yew trees shaped into pinnacles, and cypresses makes skilful use of the limited space. Documents chronicling the palace's early history mention five peacocks roaming the gardens – which is unusual for this period and location. At a lower level, on the side of the palace overlooking the Tanaro valley and Barbaresco, another formal garden – called "Maneggio" (Intrigue) – is laid out. Here, low hornbeam hedges mark out flowerbeds of various geometric shapes, arranged symmetrically around the garden's central axis. The recent restoration and conversion project has returned the garden to its original splendour. ROOMS Guests are luxuriously accommodated in eight large bedrooms on the third floor, named after prominent figures in the history of the palace. Another four bedrooms are located on the ground floor. The bedroom ensembles have been converted in keeping with the original floorplan and fresco decoration, and each one has an en-suite bathroom finely decorated in marble. The walls are decorated in the aristocratic tradition with silk or silk velvet tapestries, mounted on felt-lined frames. The furnishings are entirely in period style - most are original, dating back to when the palace was built, and some are from collections belonging to the new owners, Artusio and Gallo. So guests are immersed in the same aristocratic ambience as Carlo Giacinto himself intended, but also enjoy the latest in modern comfort and convenience. Each bedroom is equipped with the latest appliances, an LED television with Sky Gold Vision, safe, minibar and wireless internet. Guests can also make use of an on-site hairdressing, massage and beauty therapist service. THE CHEF Our chef Davide Odore was not only born in Guarene, but also on the street named after Alessandro Roero, the last of the Roero family line. This meant that, from his very first day with us, he was no stranger to the mix of ancestral history and modern-day fairytale that is the spirit of Castello di Guarene. Although only 32, he already has extensive experience working in Roero and the Langhe area. He is also open to culinary influences across the rest of Italy, in France, and even in England via celebrity chef Marco Pierre White, though he has never lost touch with his Piedmontese roots. For Davide Odore, bringing history to life means reviving the culinary traditions of his native soil, in which food produced through honest hard work was a blessing from God, to be celebrated and enjoyed in the company of family and friends. His aim is simple: every dish he creates is inspired by a dream, so every dish should be like a wonderful dream for the guest who ordered it! His method is equally simple: dedication and straightforward hard work - he appears to be immune to the over-inflated ego suffered by many others in his profession. On the door of the restaurant he owned before relocating to Guarene, there is a sign that reads "FUCINA" anziché "CUCINA" (craftmanship before cuisine). He has been heard to say that ninety per cent of his life is dedicated to reintroducing traditional fresh, natural ingredients and reinventing time-honoured dishes, adding a little innovation finished off with a signature flourish. He keeps three hundred cookery books at home, which he uses for inspiration to make his own recipes – he sees other chefs not as role models but as reference points against which he must set himself new challenges. He firmly believes that as even the simplest dish can be a masterpiece, it should always be a masterpiece. Never partial to culinary 'cheating' or flashy showmanship, he brings the honesty of his native soil and youthful imagination to his creations – which are guaranteed to delight, yet never overstated. Asked whether his cuisine is Piedmontese, Italian, French or international, refined or popular, his calm reply is always "It's just good cuisine". Every dish prepared at Castello di Guarene is not just 'well-bred' in the aristocratic sense – it also contains the essence of the land it came from. MENU À la carte menu, traditional menu, gourmet menu, truffle menu and wine list HISTORIC RESIDENCE The historic residence - the heart of Castello di Guarene In the staterooms on the palace's piano nobile - these being the interiors of highest artistic value, so also the most strictly protected - improvement work was limited to restoration only. Before any work could go ahead, historical studies and stratigraphic analysis were carried out by the local authority. The heart of the Castello di Guarene palace-museum consists of the fifteen most highly valued interiors, occupying both sides of the central hall. A guest exploring these fifteen historic interiors on either side of the Salone d'Onore (central hall) will find them just as the royal couple did on their visit in 1773. The Stanza del Vescovo (Bishop's Room) is still completely intact, displaying one of the most spectacular examples of Piedmontese baroque bandera – fantastically intricate polychrome designs embroidered in wool on worsted cotton fabric. Also preserved intact is the Camera Azzurra (Azure Room), where bandera embroidery is used in designs of finely plaited wreaths and floral blooms. Guests who stop to admire the two Chinese Rooms (Sale Cinesi) – richly decorated in 18th-century Chinese wallpaper – should note that these hand-painted wallpapers made the long journey from the Orient in the second half of the 18th century, travelling via London then by sea as far as Marseilles, from where they were transported by mule to the palace. They remain perfectly preserved in the Sale Cinesi to this day – a fine compliment to the silk fabrics that grace the four-poster beds with oriental motifs. On lifting their gaze up to the frescoed vaults of the Dining Hall and Gallery, guests will be drawn to compare them with those at the Palazzina di Caccia in Stupinigi – and, we are sure, will arrive at the conclusion that the ceilings at Guarene closely rival them in beauty. The nineteenth-century vaulted ceiling of the Sala della Musica (Music Room) will also delight the eye. Viewed as a whole, the paintings that embellish the doorframes and walls of the historic heart of the palace represent a collection of art that is by no means second-rate. Guests may – perhaps unexpectedly – encounter several well-known canvases, among them the outstanding Madonna della Cappella, and landscapes by Scipione and Vittorio Amedeo Cignaroli. In addition to all this, the palace is a rich source of interest for the amateur historian – in the region of eighty historical figures, among them princes, kings, bishops, dames and knights – as well as an exceptional museum collection of faces, stories and fascinating mementoes of the past. For those interested in fashion history, the women's clothing dating from the palace's heyday and before that is showcased here gives a vivid insight into women's fashion in the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century aristocracy. The palace also offers an itinerary of fine antique furniture, ranging from 17th-century carved wooden chests to exquisite examples of Louis XVI. Last – but not least – among the highlights of Castello di Guarene is the library. A gem for connoisseurs and a fascinating sight for all, it has accumulated hundreds of books over the centuries – all in beautiful leather bindings. Several volumes are unique examples. ROOMS 1 VITTORIA DI REVELLO Castle Deluxe Room, 60m2, view of Roero hills and the Alps This room is decorated in red – the colour of the cape worn by this young woman when her portrait was painted three centuries ago, by a fashionable portrait artist of the time. Vittoria was a Roero, from the Revello family branch – she married a Roero, Carlo Giacinto, lord of Guarene. This explains the twin family crests side by side, to celebrate their wedding at the turn of the eighteenth century. Overjoyed as they were at the birth of a son in 1702, their time together was to be cut short by fate. The war that raged across Europe also convulsed Piedmont, and Carlo Giacinto was almost constantly away from home, in command of a company of Dragoons. He had scarcely returned from the war – having fought in the epic Battle of Turin on the 7th September 1706 – when his beloved lady Vittoria died while giving birth to their second child. There had been a great love between them, and for the rest of his life the Count would cherish and preserve its memory. 2 LUISA DI MONTUÉ Castle Deluxe Room, 60m2, view of Roero hills and the Alps In 1711, Luisa became the new wife of Carlo Giacinto Roero - who had by then recovered sufficiently from Vittoria's death to consider remarrying. She was a Valperga, a noble lineage but from the less well-known collateral family branch of the Montués and Mazzés. Over eight years, she gave birth to four children, after which she died in 1719 at around thirty years of age. A painting portrays her in splendid grey and blue attire studded with precious stones, and with jewels adorning her hair. 3 ISABELLA DI PIOZZO Castle Suite, 80m2, corner room with view of Roero hills, the Alps and Monferrato Isabella became Carlo Giacinto Roero's third wife in 1722. This time, only three years had passed since the loss of the preceding spouse. By now the Count was 47 - Isabella was 22 and already a widow. Carlo Giacinto survived her too: fifteen years later - during which time she bore him another three children - he would be widowed himself once more. Isabella was at her husband's side during the years in which Castello di Guarene was being built, and was maid of honour to the Queen of Sardinia. Her memory lives on in a portrait, in which she is shown in elegant pink, gold and azure attire, with minimal adornment. 4 TRAIANO ANDREA Castle Luxury Room, 100m2, with view of Roero hills, the Alps and Monferrato Grandiose, sumptuously furnished and given individual character by the high arch that spans the ceiling, this room gives a sense of the 17th-century grandeur of Traiano, father of Carlo Giacinto. Traiano guarded his position of noble privilege jealously. His constant tendency to aggressively reaffirm his status brought him into conflict with others and made him intransigent and disdainful. A country nobleman who instilled fear and respect in equal measure, he was an authoritarian father and a stern husband to his wife. He was also a man whose horizons extended beyond the provincial – despite living much of his life safely ensconced in his castle (which was then a medieval fortress instead of a palace), and rejecting with scorn the idea of living at the palace he had bought in Turin, he made various long business trips in Italy and Europe. He could be regarded as an emblem of the stolid and rather austere character of the 17th-century Piedmontese landed aristocracy. He died at 82, a great age for that time. 5 CONTESSA MADRE Castle Deluxe Room, 50m2, with view of Roero hills, the Alps and Monferrato "Contessa Madre" (Countess Mother) is the term of address used in Italian ancestral Houses for the revered wife of the family head. It is redolent of matriarchy, but nothing could be further from the truth in the case of Lucrezia Delfina Tana d'Entracque, who lends her name to this room. Wife of the haughty Traiano Roero di Guarene and mother of Carlo Giacinto, her sensitive and submissive character – which can be guessed from her portrait – kept her from asserting any sort of authority. This in any case would have taken quite some courage, with her despot of a husband. She also suffered from poor health, and her son Carlo Giacinto, who loved her dearly, did his best to cure her with leeches and unpleasant concoctions from the medical books of the era. And yet this fragile lady was allowed some moments of worldly experience in her otherwise closeted life. As maid of honour of Queen Regent Giovanna Battista, she accompanied the royal couple and court on their voyage to Palermo, took part in the festivities welcoming Vittorio Amedeo II as the new King of Sicily, and was present at his solemn coronation in Palermo Cathedral on Christmas Eve of 1713. 6 PRINCIPE EUGENIO Castle Deluxe Room, 55m2, view of whole chain of Langhe-Roero-Monferrato hills listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site In the history of the House of Savoy, three condottieri (warlords) have attained mythical status and are immortalised in various statues at the entrance of the Palazzo Reale in Turin. These are Duke Emanuele Filiberto, Admiral Andrea Provana di Leinì and Prince Eugenio. Eugenio was from the family of Savoy-Soissons, and fought for the Habsburg family of Austria - to him they owed not only scores of military victories, but also the very foundations of their military power. It should also be remembered that in Piedmont he was considered a true compatriot, whose reputation reached new heights of glory when he arrived with thirty thousand troops to liberate Turin from the Franco-Spanish siege of 1706. In routing the army of Louis XIV, assisted by Vittorio Amedeo II, the "Gran Capitano" – as he was called – reset the balance of political power in Europe in the Habsburgs' favour. Carlo Giacinto Roero was among those who fought in the battle to liberate Turin – his letters are among the most moving written accounts of the event. 7 CARLO GIACINTO Castle Luxury Room, 75m2, with UNESCO-listed view from Monferrato to the Langhe hills, and also of the palace garden maze No palace is so closely linked to its aristocratic owner as Castello di Guarene is to Carlo Giacinto Roero. An accomplished amateur architect, he oversaw its construction, supervised painting of frescoes and furnishing work on the interior – by artists whom he sponsored himself; filled the library and historical archive with books and documents, and cultivated strong relations with Italian cultural and musical life of the era. He also found time, in the period of over 40 years after he retired from the army, to manage the family estate – which then extended from the Roero hills to the Tanaro; to start the Rossetti majolica factory, and to run the Casa del Soccorso (House of Succour) of the Fellowship of St Paul. He divided his evenings between accounts, letters, architectural drawings and cello concertini. Carlo Giacinto Roero, who was born in 1675 and died in 1749, is a prime example of a Piedmontese nobility that did not live off its subjects, but instead was endowed with entrepreneurial spirit and artistic diligence. The room named after him is intended to reflect his solemnity and elegance. 8 TERESA GABRIELLA CARESANA DI CARISIO Castle Luxury Suite, 200m2, with views in various directions taking in Monferrato to the Langhe hills, the Italian-style garden and the garden maze Teresa arrived at the palace at a very young age with her mother, a widow who was marrying Count Traiano Giuseppe, first-born son of Carlo Giacinto. She brought a new atmosphere of elegant vitality and artistic flair to the palace – the same influence that was spreading from France into Piedmont and Italy in the second half of the eighteenth century. She played the harpsichord so well that celebrated musicians such as Pugnani composed pieces specially for her to perform, while poets wrote verse in her honour. In the palace gardens – where chickens and pigs once scratched about – peacocks now roamed, and the young countess played at archery. An entire wing of the palace was redecorated according to the latest fashion of the time, with hand-painted Chinese wallpaper and elegant furniture. Teresa eventually married her step-father's brother, Count Teodoro Giuseppe, and – with her new status of Countess Roero – was a dominant figure at Castello di Guarene. The present-day drawing room in the suite was her bedroom, and has been perfectly preserved over the centuries – along with the bed she slept in as a young girl, and a portrait in which she appears dressed in attire of exquisite and sweeping elegance. In the adjoining room of the suite – the bedroom – the Chinese-style upholstery of the grand four-poster bed, the exquisite wallpaper and all other furnishings are entirely original from the period. This is the suite where – more than in any of the others – guests will feel closest to Castello di Guarene's distant past. 9 ABATE DI GUARENE Classic, 40m2, with private terrace looking out onto the Roero heights and towards the distant Alps There is always at least one individual among the descendants of a noble family who devotes themselves to religion, as there is always at least one daughter sacrificed to the convent to satisfy the whims of the Lord (or rather of the family) – the Roero family has more than its fair share of nuns. The story of the Abbot of Guarene Giuseppe Maria Ignazio, brother of Carlo Giacinto, is nevertheless more puzzling than is usual. This is because at a certain point in his life when he was no longer a young man, he decided to renounce his vocation as a monk. Whether he was already in love, or fell in love later, appears irrelevant – the important fact is that suddenly he was not only reduced to the status of layman, but was also married. Naturally, his choice of wife was suitably aristocratic – the daughter of Marquis Ceva di Nucetto. The Roero family archive contains no record of the family's reaction to this turn of events. 10 CAPITANO DEI DRAGONI ROSSI Castle Room, 60m2, with private terrace looking out onto the Roero heights and towards the distant Alps The name given to this room was inspired by the military career of Carlo Giacinto Roero, which lasted less than ten years and began in 1697 when he entered the famous Accademia Reale in Turin. His status as a nobleman did not spare him from starting at the lowest officer rank – that of "cornetta", the regimental standard bearer – and from being paid such a low wage that it would not have been enough to live on without his family's deliberately restrained financial support. Within four years he rose to the rank of captain, and was put in command of a company of Dragoons - elite troops that travelled on horseback and fought on foot - first with the Genevese Regiment (from the territory south of Geneva which then belonged to the House of Savoy), then with the renowned Regiment of the King's Dragoons. From the colour of the justaucorps they wore, these troops were known as the "Dragoni Rossi" (Red Dragoons). 11 IL CAVALIERE DI MALTA Castle Room, 60m2, with private terrace looking out onto the Roero heights and towards the distant Alps The "Cavaliere di Malta" (Knight of Malta), is one of the brothers of Carlo Giacinto: Pietro Francesco Roero di Guarene. Thanks to him, there is an obscure connection between the palace at Guarene and the faraway Mediterranean island. At one time, Pietro Francesco travelled the waves as captain of a galley, whose masthead flew the red and white flag of the Maltese Cross – occasioning much righteous pride among Roero family members. Knight Pietro Francesco di Guarene built a house on the island of Malta once he had been accepted into the Order of the Knights Hospitallers. The building is known to this day as Guarena Palace, but no trace exists of the paintings, majolica ceramics or furniture that Carlo Giacinto sent from Turin to his “seafarer" brother - their whereabouts are still unknown. 12 MARCHESA DI SAN TOMMASO Castle Room, 60m2, with private terrace looking out onto the Roero heights and towards the distant Alps It is not known whether the marriage of Paola Beatrice Roero, aunt of Carlo Giacinto, was an affair governed by the heart or by family interests. It is certainly true that by marrying into the Carron di San Tommaso family, the Guarene family had made a wise move. The object of Paola Beatrice's affections was Carlo Giuseppe Vittorio, son of Francesco Guglielmo, the First Secretary of State to the Duke of Savoy – also known as the Marquis of San Tommaso. This position of high office – like the Collar of Our Lady of the Annunciation – was almost hereditary within the family. Carlo Giuseppe, Beatrice's husband, carried on this tradition, so she assumed the title of "Marchesa di San Tommaso" (Marquess of San Tommaso). Her portrait – on which there is a nameplate displaying this title – shows us a woman who is elegant if not particularly beautiful. It is immediately apparent that she shares one feature in common with her nephew Carlo Giacinto – a 'strong' nose!

Bio

I graduated from Manchester University in 2000 with a BA(Hons) in Spanish and Italian. Since 2003 I've had varied experience in freelance translation of texts and websites, mainly in the fields of Travel/Tourism and Industry, from Spanish, Italian and French into English.

In October 2019, I was awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Specialised Translation by Roehampton University (London), after completing a two-year course. This comprised MA Specialised Translation modules in Translation Theory and Practice, and Scientific and Technical Translation (Spanish > English). These were combined with modules transferred from a Postgraduate Certificate in Translation and Technology awarded in 2015 by London Metropolitan University, comprising Translation Tools, Localisation, and Subtitling (Spanish > English). I now have 5 years' experience using SDL Trados 2014 Freelance to achieve consistency and speed in translation projects.

In addition to this, I have an NCTJ qualification in Sub-editing, and worked from 2008 to 2009 as a sub-editor for Pro-Talk (Centaur Media) in London. This entailed editing press releases about scientific and industrial products for publication on company websites, and articles for the online and paper version of 'The Engineer' magazine.
