''On all sides round horror spread wide; the very silence breathed a terror on my soul'' - was Virgil referring to Hell, or the disintegration of the EU? Much the same thing to many .....

Probably giving up the translation business soon .... hasn't business dropped off since CAT tools took over? Standards are not even ISO compliant, yet EU tenders are still being awarded.....professionalism and high standards no longer seem to apply, and very little is regulated anymore. Perhaps we should remember the Patron Saint of Translators - St. Jerome - who ended up living as a hermit in a cave, with writing materials and the trumpet of final judgment forming part of his iconography. Do they have QC at the End of the World to check the right people have been condemned to Hell ? :)

and another example! A set of medical records - 'MRI scan' had been mis-translated as an 'NMR-scan' - appears a physics database has been fed into one ugly tool that's used for medical translations! We're not all machines yet, are we?

Ugh! Just proofread a document for food labels - multi-lingual project - some of the machine translators in several languages had used 'cornstarch' instead of 'rice starch' - POTENTIALLY LETHAL IF SOMEONE HAS AN ALLERGY ! !! Is all that matters 'cost -savings' now?

Great to work with Benetton marketing on 'F A B R I C A C I R C U S' - a magical architectural space/workshop, designed by the brilliant Tadao Ando, where you can learn by doing. Great idea to ''subvert'' the young by encouraging them to create something instead of destroying it!

Google Translate has proven especially unreliable in medical communication, and was the focus of an advisory last year from the Quality and Patient Safety Division of the state Board of Registration in Medicine (QPSD). The advisory noted that patients with limited English skills “make up a significant proportion of patients in acute care hospitals and emergency departments’’ and warned against use of services like Google Translate, Babel Fish and Bing Translator for clinical interactions with patients. Examples of errors with Google Translate “Your wife is stable” was translated to “your wife cannot fall over.” “Did he have a high fever at home?” was translated to “your home temperature was high.” “Your husband had a cardiac arrest” was translated to “your husband’s heart was imprisoned.” “Your child will be born premature” was translated to “your child is sleeping early.”

To support environmental management there is increasing need for timely, accurate and detailed information on our land. Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) are increasingly used to monitor agricultural crop development, habitat quality or urban heat efficiency. An important reason is that UAS technology is maturing quickly while the flexible capabilities of UAS fill a gap between satellite based and ground based geo-sensing systems. You can now read all about activities in this domain at Wageningen University in English here: http://www.wur.nl/en/Expertise-Services/Chair-groups/Environmental-Sciences/Laboratory-of-Geo-information-Science-and-Remote-Sensing/Research/Integrated-land-monitoring/UARSF.htm

Comparing and contrasting the regulations for drone flights in the Netherlands with those the UK's CAA has come up with - as seen in https://www.dronewatch.nl/wet-en-regelgeving/ the Dutch authorities have really grasped the full potential of these blighters commercially - wish we could get more support from the business community in the UK.
