Probably giving up the translation business soon .... hasn't business dropped off since CAT tools took over? Standards are not even ISO compliant, yet EU tenders are still being awarded.....professionalism and high standards no longer seem to apply, and very little is regulated anymore. Perhaps we should remember the Patron Saint of Translators - St. Jerome - who ended up living as a hermit in a cave, with writing materials and the trumpet of final judgment forming part of his iconography. Do they have QC at the End of the World to check the right people have been condemned to Hell ? :) Translating twitter posts about the #giletjaunes protests in France, Belgium, Holland and England ........ A set of medical records - 'MRI scan' had been mis-translated as an 'NMR-scan' - appears a physics database has been fed into one ugly tool that's used for medical translations! We're not all machines yet, are we? Ugh! Just proofread a document for food labels - multi-lingual project - some of the machine translators in several languages had used 'cornstarch' instead of 'rice starch' - POTENTIALLY LETHAL IF SOMEONE HAS AN ALLERGY ! !! Is all that matters 'cost -savings' now? Just started an exploration of machine translation tools (Google Translate, Gengo) - the mistakes in scientific and medical work can be quite dangerous - more to follow....... Google Translate has proven especially unreliable in medical communication, and was the focus of an advisory last year from the Quality and Patient Safety Division of the state Board of Registration in Medicine (QPSD). The advisory noted that patients with limited English skills “make up a significant proportion of patients in acute care hospitals and emergency departments’’ and warned against use of services like Google Translate, Babel Fish and Bing Translator for clinical interactions with patients. Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) are increasingly used to monitor agricultural crop development, habitat quality or urban heat efficiency.
