I love how many of the comments fall into one of two categories:
1. Denying your existence.
2. Asking about your brother Bart.
Although, I don't think the Guardian did you any favours by interspersing your story with that of "celebrities" who wouldn't know real work if it came up and slapped them in the face, blathering about how they can't get on Twitter and bore us with the mundane minutiae of their (self-important) lives.

Personally I don't have a smart-phone, as you are very anti-iphone, I'm very anti-smartphone. As long as my phone can make calls, send texts and get on the internet thats all I need. Anything else I've got laptops and computers for. Apps just seem somewhat pointless.
I agree it is really annoying when you miss out on a job because of a missed email, with PMs who are so trigger happy on the "send" button that they just offload the job onto the first translator to respond. Once I missed out on a job after I failed to respond to an email after NINE MINUTES. I can only presume someone beat me to it. Despite this, I refuse to be a slave to my email inbox, sure I don't want to miss jobs, and I strive to regularly check my email, but on the rare occassions I leave my computer the last thing I want to do is go back online on my phone (although I do if I'm away for any length of time to check). If the price to pay for that is a few lost jobs then so be it, I want some freedom and ability to do other things other than be glued to electrical equipment.
On a superficial note, I never did like the Blackberry, I don't like the aesthetic design or the interface. If I decided to jump ship and get a smartphone, I'd opt for Android or one of the others. ▲ Collapse

Ditto, and I couldn't suppress a chortle of Schadenfreude at the Blackberry debacle of the past couple of days.

That sketch was kind of prophetic, it's really funny I saw it a while ago too.
All this trouble with the Blackberrys and yet on the news this morning there were scores of idiots camping outside Apple stores for the release of the new iphone 4S. These people have more money than braincells. (in a recession!).

...I especially liked how on the news this morning, it seemed that the main upgrade was it had a much better camera on it....seriously?
If you want a panoramic zoom lens 70000 megapixel camera, get a camera. Somewhere along the line people seem to have forgot phones are for phoning. Or am I just terribly old fashioned. ▲ Collapse

I have been using e-mail service on my Nokia phones for years, and before that on Siemens phones. When a mail drops in on my mail server a copy is fetched to my phone, at once or whenever I wish. And I can answer from my phone.
So what does Blackberry that other phones cannot? Just like to know.

I am the owner of a blackberry and even though I'm not into having the latest technology I must admit I find that it is the easiest smart phone to use. I have had other brands, and even had a touch screen phone that I couldn't get rid of fast enough, but I find the BB solid, easy to use, and (you may laugh) the most logical. Not to mention that the battery doesn't die after one days' use.

I guess it all comes down to what you need your phone to do: I wanted a phone with a GPS (without having to pay for some sort of plan on top of the phone) with vocal commands, that I could receive my emails on, surf the internet (if needs be) and be contact with clients/fellow translators/friends regardless of their location, without having a brick in my handbag but felt "nice" in my hand. All of this without a touchscreen! I even find the keyboard fantastic- means I can type in any language without having to fight some pre-installed dictionary because I forgot to change it beforehand. ▲ Collapse

Nothing. Just a matter of personal preference. It's a bit like asking what can Trados do that MemoQ cannot. Not much.
However, as an owner of a BlackBerry and a CAT tool, I find it hard to imagine going back to the dark old days of a phone that can only make phone calls and a word processor that has no memory...

The only reason this outage has been such a big deal is because BB users actually depend on their devices. They use them to do business rather than play Fruit Ninja like the iPhone crowd.

Two reasons:
- Full QWERTY keyboard
- BlackBerry servers
If you were using any of the phones listed below, you were probably relying on BlackBerry technology: BES/BIS is the most secure way to communicate via email, which is probably why Obama uses a BlackBerry instead of an iPhone

For when I'm out of the US, my provider allows me to activate worldwide, unlimited e-mail roaming for my Blackberry at a flat fee of $19.99/month. It's an incredible bargain, considering how much I use it and the astronomical cost of a la carte data roaming. I'm not aware of this type of flat-rate data global roaming deal (not for US users, anyway) being offered for any other type of device, and I assume it has something to do with Blackberry's specific capabilities.
