It may possibly be one of these things, needed to stop the trailer - which clearly has wheels - rolling away. To keep it safe with the trailer, it could be "gesteckt" in a pocket provided for the purpose. If I am far wide of the mark, do feel free to send me a picture.

Thanks for the picture. After some googling I'm pretty sure it's a shank -- of which there are thousands of kinds. You might try 'insertable shank'. If it were a solid or fixed piece into which a bar was inserted it would be a "pintle mount". I think judging from the description it's the a shank bar that would be inserted into a pintle mount.
