Arabic to English: The tourist Detailed field: Tourism & Travel

He had received an unexpected phone call a few days before and was now in a window seat on an airplane about to land at an unknown city. It had surprised him at first to hear her voice again, and it had taken him a few minutes to be able to draw a mental picture of her; his memory eroded by the years. The woman had spoken in a flat voice without projecting emotions of any kind. She had given him very clear instructions, and the next day he was booking a flight to a country he had never been to before. As the plane descended upon the city, the landscape became more defined. The geometrical shapes of buildings started to emerge hard and sporadically from the brown sand that had constituted the scenery for hours during the trip. One or two buildings rose from the naked landscape as the plane was about to land and he could spot the flow of cars on the highways, looking like black spots moving in opposite directions in uninterrupted synchronization. From a certain height, the perception of things on the ground becomes surreal; the houses and the trees become like pieces in a giant model eliminating any notion of human scale. This omniscient sight planted a kind of vertigo in him. He started to wonder about what was awaiting him down there, and if he was going to be able to find what he came looking for. The airport was crowded. The size of the building with its incredibly high ceiling and series of gates made him feel dizzy. He had the unpleasant impression of being trapped in a maze, an endless network of corridors and travelators all linking to each other in a continuous loop. Every gate presented the same settings: a crowd of tourists, the airport staff in their identical uniforms, and large announcements signs, most of them in a language foreign to him. He felt released when at last he managed to catch a taxi in the waiting area. Since he couldn’t explain to the driver where he wanted to go, he unfolded a map and some notes he had made from the information that the women had given him over the phone. From the moment the taxi driver started the engine, he felt all the accumulated hours of the flight collapse over him in the form of a sudden sleepiness, and decided to let himself drift away away in the comfortable impression that the driver knew better than him his destination. When he awoke a few minutes later, the scenery that served as background for the highway had significantly changed. He could get a glimpse at the rising skyline of the new parts of the city. Then, almost immediately, he was entering what he thought was downtown. The traffic grew denser, the avenues wider, the buildings taller, the urban sprawl that escorted him.
