inestimável, essas áreas são um retrato vivo da riqueza
natural, histórica e cultural deste país-continente.
A cidade histórica de Ouro Preto, em Minas Gerais, foi o
primeiro sítio nacional a ser tombado, em 1980; e o Complexo
de Conservação da Amazônia Central, o mais recente, em
2003. Em comum com os demais 754 Patrimônios da
Humanidade espalhados por toda a Terra, as áreas brasileiras
têm a excepcional beleza, a importância que ultrapassa
fronteiras e que é causa comum de todos os povos,
e o permanente risco de desaparecer.
Essa riqueza inestimável depende da constância de um olhar
vigilante para sua manutenção. Mas só se busca preservar o
que se ama. E só se ama o que se conhece.

In Brazil alone there are 17 different natural and cultural sites officially designated by UNESCO as World Heritage sites. Home to a wide range of animal and vegetal species, and to unique urban configurations of priceless architectural and artistic value, these areas are a living portrait of the natural, historical and cultural wealth of this country called Brazil. The historical town of Ouro Preto, in Minas Gerais State, was the first site listed by UNESCO in 1980, while the Central Amazon Conservation Complex (2003) was the latest. These Brazilian sites share in common with the other 754 World Heritage sites scattered around the globe their exceptional beauty, their importance that goes beyond borderlines and has become a common cause for all peoples of the Earth, and the permanent threat of extinction.
Such invaluable wealth depends on constant watchful care. We can only seek to preserve what we love, and we can only love what we know.
