The House was bounded by a botanical garden, far away from the city. To the left was a stable and, upon the highest hill, there was a mill, which was not part of the property but magnified the landscape, as in a painting. And close to the mill was a storehouse. Turned to the west, a small old wine cellar was still standing, but it had not worked for a long time.
The house was in perfect harmony with Nature and with the laws of the Universe. Many distant days ago, when it had been used in the morning by the rising sun in the east, its first light crossed the bedrooms and the stable windows, waking up the animals and the people. It was so awesomely built that one did not have to be an architect to realise that such a construction was a masterpiece of art.
But it was all falling apart at the time. Most of the paintwork had been washed from the walls in the last winter’s storms; the windows were broken and so the squirrels used to find cover inside it; the plants had grown in a wild way and turned out to be a perfect home for snakes, rats, lizards and spiders. In the very old mat by the door, which had some letters ripped off, was written the word «elcom». Such a beautiful house, of such great usefulness in olden times, was now nothing more than a pile of rubble and no-one had lived there for almost a hundred years.
It was quite normal for children from the city to run all day long in the neighbouring fields. It was a wonderful spot for them to be, with lots of amusing things to do. And, one day, an eight-year-old girl with black eyes and hair, in a flimsy blue dress, dared to enter the mansion’s front gate, fearless but cautious, step by step through the mud. A couple of times she stopped, thinking about turning back, but after taking a deep breath, she carried on. It was almost fifty metres
from the gate to the front entrance and, for the ingenuous little child, the path seemed too distant. Despite being an extremely hot afternoon, from time to time she could feel a calm breeze that played with her long black hair. The snakes kept away from the imprecise path. Those creatures had got used to living like that and didn’t notice any uncommon sound. She finally stood by the doorway, standing over the «elcom» carpet and knocked three times.
‘I thought I heard someone at the door,’ the old lady announced. ‘I guess my ears can no longer be trusted.’
The girl seemed to insist on knocking at the door, despite the silence indicating that nobody was ever going to answer it. She knocked, knocked and knocked.
The old lady stopped knitting the socks she was making for next winter and said.
‘Oh, dear, but it is! There’s definitely someone at the door! Rudolf hey, kittie, kittie’ she called. The cat, which could barely move, jumped off the sofa and waited for the lady’s hug. ‘It seems we have visitors. D’you know how long it has been since the last time we had a visitor? Oh, I know I can’t remember.’
She opened the door, after recovering from all the excitement, and stared at the young child.
‘Hello, honey, are you lost?’ she asked.
‘No, Ma’am,’ the girl answered. ‘Just thirsty. I’ve been playing for quite some time and I would be glad of a glass of water, Ma’am.’
‘Oh, but certainly, my dear,’ the old lady nodded and bade the young girl step into the living-room.
‘I’m sorry about this mess, dear, but I confess that I don’t usually have other people around,’ the old lady apologised with a smile.
‘What makes your say that?’ the girl replied.
‘Oh, I know everybody thinks this house is haunted… and people are scared of dropping by… nonsense really!’
The young child did not answer, but her eyes examined that old reckless place while she drank the glass of cold fresh water.
‘There, you see?’ the lady exclaimed. ‘Are you feeling better? D’you want anything else? A cookie perhaps…?’
The young girl gave it a thought and said anxiously. ‘Well, I do love mushrooms…’
‘Then mushrooms it is!’ insisted the old woman, and prepared a very good meal for them both.
They talked all afternoon and the lonely woman, permanently stroking her cat, became acquainted with the girl. She found out that the girl’s name was Ashley Linger and that she was eight years old, but she wasn’t able to discover much more about her. Nothing about her home, her parents, her school, her friends… but it didn’t matter really. What mattered was that they were both there, the old lady and the young child, chatting about nonsense and triviality or laughing over boring jokes.
And every day after that, always at the same time, the girl knocked on the old lady’s front door and asked for a glass of water. And every single day the old lady used to let her in, give her a good meal, and they would laugh and joke and play some odd games. The girl was a ray of sunshine in the old lady’s life and she could hardly wait for the chimes of four o’clock, at which time, invariably, the young child arrived, like a devoted friend who never forgot the task she was undertaking.
One morning, the lady went to the city. It wasn’t too far from home, but it had been very long since the last time she went there. She couldn’t find any reason why this was so, but the truth was that time had passed by and she had just stayed there in that old shadowy house where nobody lived. But that day was different. She wanted to go out, to breathe the polluted air of progress, to bring to mind her juvenile years, the spring of her life when everything was so different from that moment… yes, most women were living in lodges at the time, and all wearing t-shirts saying «bad girl»… No… back then, in the springtime of her life, there was decency and respect.
And the old lady, lost in her thoughts, went into a grocery store to buy some more mushrooms. After picking them and mixing them with the other things she was carrying, she joined the long queue to pay for the groceries. It was then that she noticed a photograph on the wall – Ashley’s photo. Yes, without any doubt. It really was her photo. What a fortunate coincidence it was!
A woman in front of her was talking to a person she recognized as the owner of the grocery store. What was the woman saying? Something about ‘it is high time to forget about that tragedy.’ Yes, that was it. ‘It has been,’ she was saying, ‘another year and the small beautiful Ashley is now definitely in heaven…’ Yes, it seemed the old lady was hearing correctly! But it could not be… for the reason that even yesterday Ashley was… she was… well, the old lady refused to accept she had had delusions! If so, how come she had recognised the girl in the photograph? If the young girl was dead, how was it possible that only the day before she had been at the old lady’s place? And, if the old lady had hallucinated the whole thing, how come she knew that the girl in the photo was the same girl that used to visit her? And it was, for it could be a twin sister, but the woman in front of her called the child in the photo Ashley.
‘Well, it’s easy for everybody to say, but…’ the man, most likely the father, cried. ‘You people have never felt this wound… and it aches so much! And especially today… a year later…’
The old lady from the house of hollow shades did not listen to anything more. She moved as far as she could away from there to the only graveyard in the city, inside the church walls. It took her half an hour to find a grey marble gravestone, embellished by eight red roses and a memorial with the inscription: Ashley Linger, her body belongs to the land, but her
spirit belongs to us, RIP. And it was dated a year before! The girl lying there, the girl in the picture, the girl who had allegedly visited the old lady, had died one year before…
It is one thing when others start to have doubts about your sanity, but it is an entirely different thing when you doubt yourself! That was what was happening to the old lady, when she went back home, trembling with nervousness and fear. She eagerly waited for the chimes of four o’clock to see if once again, as before, the young child would come and ask her for a glass of water. But the hours were crawling by much too slowly. Always feeling sorry about the impossibility of turning back time, the old lady would now give everything she possessed to accelerate the process! A thousand thoughts flitted through her mind per second, just like clouds do in the sky.
Finally the door shuddered with the young girl’s knocking! A shiver ran down the old lady’s spine when she opened the front door and there she was – the eight-year-old girl – smiling at her and asking, ‘Ma’am, could you give me a glass of water?’
‘I went to your father’s grocery store this morning!’ the old woman burst out. The little girl lost her smile and made a very grave and solemn face. She was silent for a while and then she said, ‘I know.’
‘You know?’ the old lady was amazed. ‘Well, then you must know that I’ve been to the graveyard too.’
The child was becoming annoyed. ‘Is there any question you would like to ask me?’
‘Yes… I suppose there is,’ answered the woman with her voice now altered ‘Are you… you… are you…?’
‘Am I what?!’
‘Are you dead?’ She finally asked it.
‘I am,’ the girl responded forthrightly.
‘But… but this cannot be… it is a joke… a very bad joke, young lady,’ terror could be sensed in the old woman’s voice.
‘Why?’
‘Because dead people don’t talk, don’t… don’t eat our food… don’t ask for water… well, dead people do not behave as if they were alive,’ she completed.
‘No? Well, you seem to have been doing pretty fine!’
‘Yes but I am not dead!’
‘Oh, but you are! Did you speak to anyone in the grocery store?’
‘I didn’t,’ she answered frankly.
Did you pay for your stuff there?’ the girl insisted.
‘No, I… I left before I could do it, I was…’
‘D’you talk with anyone but me?’
‘I don’t have many visitors.’
‘D’you know why? Because nobody lives here! You are not a flesh and bone person anymore!’
‘Yeah? And how exactly did I die?’ the old lady asked. Of course, she was not swayed at all by this conversation and never would be.
‘Don’t know,’ the young child replied.
‘Ok, then how did you die?’
‘I ate a poisonous mushroom!’
‘Stop it!’ the old lady shouted ‘This is implausible! I am alive, I breathe this air, I feel pain, and I’m hungry, and sometimes sad, and this is my house!’
‘This is not your house,’ the girl corrected her, serenely and with the most melodic, tender and angelic voice, ‘this is the House of Hollow Shades!’

A casa era delimitada por um jardim botânico, bem longe da cidade. À esquerda ficava um estábulo e, na colina mais alta, havia um moinho, que não fazia parte da propriedade mas que aperfeiçoava a paisagem, como num quadro. E junto ao moinho ficava um celeiro. Virada para oeste, permanecia ainda uma velha adega, mas não funcionava há já muito tempo.
A casa encontrava-se em perfeita harmonia com a Natureza e com as leis do Universo. Há muitos e distantes dias, quando tinha sido usada de manhã pelo sol nascente de este, a primeira luz atravessava os quartos e as janelas do estábulo, acordando animais e pessoas. Estava tão magnificamente construída que não era necessário ser arquiteto para perceber que tal construção era uma obra-prima de arte.
Mas neste momento tudo se desmoronava. A maior parte da pintura tinha sido desbotada pelas tempestades do último inverno; as janelas estavam partidas, pelo que os esquilos costumavam encontrar abrigo no seu interior; as plantas tinham crescido de modo selvagem, tornando-se a casa perfeita para cobras, ratos, lagartos e aranhas. No muito antigo tapete da entrada, que tinha algumas letras arrancadas, estava escrita a palavra «vind1». Uma casa tão bela, tão útil em tempos antigos, era agora nada mais do que uma pilha de lixo e ninguém ali vivera durante quase uma centena de anos.

Era habitual as crianças da cidade correrem todo o dia nos campos vizinhos. Era um lugar maravilhoso para estarem, com imensas coisas divertidas para fazer. E, um dia, uma menina de oito anos, com olhos e cabelos negros, num frívolo vestido azul, atreveu-se a entrar pelo portão da frente da mansão, destemida mas cautelosa, pé ante pé, pela lama. Parou um par de vezes, pensando em voltar para trás, mas depois de respirar fundo, continuou. Eram quase cinquenta metros do portão à entrada e, para a pequena ingénua, o caminho parecia demasiado distante. Apesar de estar uma tarde extremamente quente, de tempos a tempos podia sentir uma brisa calma que brincava com o seu longo cabelo negro. As cobras mantinham-se afastadas do caminho indefinido. Aquelas criaturas tinham-se acostumado a viver assim e não repararam em nenhum som fora do comum. Finalmente, ela chegou à porta e, de pé sobre o «vind», bateu três vezes.
- Pensei ter ouvido alguém à porta - declarou a velha senhora. - Parece que os meus ouvidos
já não são de fiar.
A menina pareceu insistir em bater, apesar do silêncio indicar que nunca ninguém haveria de abrir. Ela bateu, bateu e bateu.
A velha senhora parou de tricotar as meias que estava a fazer para o próximo inverno e disse:
- Oh, lá está! Está mesmo alguém à porta! Rudolf, anda cá, gatinho - chamou. O gato, que mal se podia mexer, saltou do sofá e esperou pelo abraço da senhora. - Parece que temos visitas.
Sabes quanto tempo passou desde o nosso último visitante? Oh, já nem me lembro.
Ela abriu a porta, depois de recuperar de toda a excitação, e olhou para a pequena criança.
- Olá, querida, estás perdida? - perguntou.
- Não, m’nha senhora - respondeu a menina. - Só tenho sede. Tenho estado a brincar há algum tempo e agradecia um copo de água, m’nha senhora.”
- Oh, com certeza, minha querida - assentiu a velha senhora e mandou a menina entrar para
a sala de estar.
- Peço desculpa por esta confusão, querida, mas confesso que não costuma vir aqui ninguém
- desculpou-se a velha senhora, com um sorriso.
- Por que diz isso? - respondeu a menina.
- Oh, sei que todos pensam que esta casa está assombrada…e têm medo de aparecer…é um
disparate, claro!
A pequena não respondeu, mas os seus olhos examinaram aquele velho lugar negligenciado enquanto bebia o copo de água fresca.
- Pronto, vês? - exclamou a senhora. - Sentes-te melhor? Queres mais alguma coisa? Talvez uma bolacha…?
A menina considerou e disse, com ansiedade - Bem, eu gosto de cogumelos…
- Cogumelos, então! - insistiu a velha senhora e preparou uma bela refeição para ambas.
Conversaram toda a tarde e a solitária senhora, constantemente acariciando o seu gato, ficou a conhecer a menina. Descobriu que o nome da rapariga era Ashley Linger e que tinha oito anos, mas não conseguiu descobrir muito mais sobre ela. Nada sobre a sua casa, os seus pais, a sua escola, os seus amigos…mas na verdade não interessava. O importante era que estavam ambas ali, a velha senhora e a pequena, tagarelando sobre disparates e ninharias ou rindo de anedotas enfadonhas.
E todos os dias depois, a menina batia à porta da velha senhora e pedia um copo de água. E todos os dias a senhora costumava deixá-la entrar, dar-lhe uma boa refeição e então
riam e brincavam e jogavam a alguns jogos estranhos. A menina era um raio de sol na vida da velha senhora e ela mal podia esperar pelas badaladas das quatro da tarde, altura em que, invariavelmente, a pequena chegava, como uma amiga devotada que nunca esquecia a tarefa em mãos.
Uma manhã, a senhora foi à cidade. Não era muito longe de casa, mas já passara muito tempo desde a última vez que lá tinha ido. Ela não encontrava qualquer razão para ser assim, mas a verdade é que o tempo tinha passado e ela tinha simplesmente ficado naquela casa sombria e velha onde ninguém vivia. Mas aquele dia era diferente. Ela queria sair, respirar o ar poluído do progresso, relembrar os seus anos de juventude, a primavera da sua vida, quando tudo era tão diferente de agora…sim, a maior parte das mulheres vivia nesta altura em pequenos apartamentos, todas usando t-shirts a dizer «bad girl»…Não, nessa altura, na primavera da sua vida, havia decência
e respeito.
E a velha senhora, perdida nos seus pensamentos, entrou numa mercearia para comprar mais cogumelos. Depois de os escolher e colocar junto às outras coisas que levava, juntou-se à longa fila para pagar as compras. Foi então que reparou numa fotografia na parede – a foto de Ashley. Sim, não havia dúvida. Era mesmo a foto dela. Que feliz coincidência!
Uma mulher à sua frente estava a falar com uma pessoa que ela reconheceu como o
proprietário da mercearia. Que dizia a mulher? Algo como “já é tempo de esquecer essa tragédia.” Sim, era isso. - Já passara - dizia ela - outro ano e a pequena e bela Ashley está agora no céu com toda a certeza… Sim, parecia que a velha senhora estava a ouvir corretamente! Mas não podia ser…porque ainda ontem Ashley estivera…ela estivera… bem, a velha senhora recusava-se a aceitar ter tido delírios! Se assim era, como é que tinha reconhecido a menina na fotografia? Se a pequena estava morta, como era possível que no dia anterior tivesse estado na sua casa? E, se
tivesse alucinado tudo, como saberia que a menina na foto era a mesma que costumava visitá-la? E era, pois ainda que pudesse ser uma irmã gémea, a senhora da frente tinha chamado Ashley à criança na foto.
- Bem, é fácil para as pessoas falarem, mas… - lamentou-se o homem, provavelmente o pai. - Nunca sentiram esta ferida…e dói tanto! E especialmente hoje…um ano depois…
A velha senhora da casa das sombras não ouviu mais nada. Afastou-se dali tanto quanto possível, até ao único cemitério na cidade, dentro dos muros da igreja. Levou meia hora para encontrar uma lápide de mármore cinza, embelezada por oito rosas vermelhas e um memorial com a inscrição: Ashley Linger, o seu corpo pertence à terra, mas o seu espírito a nós pertence, RIP. E tinha a data de um ano atrás! A menina que ali jazia, a menina na fotografia, a menina que alegadamente tinha visitado a velha senhora, tinha morrido um ano antes…
Uma coisa é os outros começarem a ter dúvidas sobre a tua sanidade, outra coisa muito diferente é tu próprio duvidares! Era isso que estava a acontecer à velha senhora, quando regressou a casa, tremendo de nervosismo e temor. Ansiosamente, esperou pelas badaladas das quatro da tarde para ver se, mais uma vez, a pequena viria e pediria um copo de água. Mas as horas arrastavam-se tão devagar! Antes pesarosa com a impossibilidade de voltar atrás no tempo, agora a velha senhora daria tudo o que possuía para acelerar o processo. Mil pensamentos por segundo
esvoaçaram pela sua mente, como as nuvens fazem no céu.
Finalmente, a porta estremeceu com as pancadas da menina. Um arrepio correu pela coluna da velha senhora quando abriu a porta e lá estava ela – a menina de oito anos – sorridente e a pedir
- M’nha Senhora, podia dar-me um copo de água?
- Fui à mercearia do teu pai esta manhã - explodiu a velha senhora. A pequena perdeu o sorriso e fez uma expressão muito grave e solene. Ficou algum tempo em silêncio e depois disse - Eu sei.
- Sabes? - admirou-se a velha senhora. - Bem , então deves saber que também estive no cemitério.
A criança estava a ficar incomodada. – Quer fazer-me alguma pergunta?
- Sim… suponho que sim - respondeu a senhora, agora com a voz alterada. - Tu estás…tu…estás…?
- Estou o quê?
- Tu estás morta? - perguntou finalmente.
- Estou - respondeu a menina abertamente.
- Mas…mas não pode ser…é uma brincadeira…uma brincadeira muito má, minha menina! - podia sentir-se o terror na voz da velha senhora.
- Porquê?
- Porque os mortos não falam, não…não comem a nossa comida…não pedem água…bom, os mortos não se comportam como se estivessem vivos - completou.
- Não? Bem, você parece estar a ir muito bem!
- Sim, mas eu não estou morta!
- Oh, está sim! Falou com alguém na mercearia?
- Não - respondeu ela com franqueza.
- Pagou pelas suas compras? - insistiu a menina.
- Não. Eu… saí antes de o poder fazer. Estava… - Fala com alguém sem ser eu?
- Não tenho muitas visitas.
- Sabe porquê? Porque ninguém vive aqui! Você já não é uma pessoa de carne e osso!
- Ai, sim? E como foi ao certo que morri? - perguntou a velha senhora. Claro que não estava
convencida por toda esta conversa, nem nunca estaria.
- Não sei - respondeu a jovem.
- Muito bem, então como morreste tu?
- Comi um cogumelo venenoso!
- Para! - gritou a velha senhora. - Isto é inconcebível! Eu estou viva, eu respiro este ar, eu sinto
dor e fome e às vezes tristeza e esta é a minha casa!
- Esta não é a sua casa, - corrigiu-a a menina, serenamente e com a voz mais melódica, doce e angelical, - esta é a Casa das Sombras!
