Source text - German [...] »Einst und jetzt«, so hatte Dr. Bernhard Beer, der wohl wichtigste jüdische Reformer Dresdens, seine Gefühle umschrieben, als er fast 161 Jahre früher die Weihe der ersten, von Gottfried Semper entworfenen Synagoge am Hasenberg miterleben konnte. Es ist zu vermuten, daß Beer mit diesen drei Worten auch den dramatischen Weg der Juden in Dresden und Sachsen auf eine kurze Formel bringen wollte. Es war ein Weg, der von der zunächst nur geduldeten Ansiedlung weniger Familien und der Möglichkeit des Gottesdienstes nur im ganz privaten Raum im 18. Jahrhundert bis zu wichtigen gesetzlichen Regelungen für die bürgerliche Gleichstellung der Juden und zum repräsentativen Gottesdienst in hervorragender städtebaulicher Lage geführt hatte. Wahrscheinlich implizierte das »einst und jetzt« Bernhard Beers aber auch einen Rückblick auf die komplizierten und konfliktreichen innerjüdischen Entwicklungsprozesse. Als Titel des vorliegenden Sammelbandes verweist der Beersche Ausspruch auf dreihundert Jahre jüdische Geschichte in Dresden. Es ist wie überall in Deutschland und in vielen europäischen Ländern eine Geschichte, die an Dramatik und mörderischen Konsequenzen vorher nicht Geahntes und nie wieder Zuzulassendes birgt. Gleichzeitig enthält diese Geschichte aber auch Mut und Hoffnung auf Neuanfang und stabile neue Normen im gesellschaftlichen Zusammenleben.
Nur wenige Mitglieder der alten Israelitischen Religionsgemeinde zu Dresden hatten das Ende der Shoa im Mai 1945 erlebt, waren doch die meisten von ihnen umgekommen oder in alle Winkel dieser Erde verstreut. Diese wenigen Überlebenden sowie »Neu-Dresdner«, vorwiegend befreite KZ-Häftlinge aus anderen deutschen Städten oder aus Osteuropa sowie zurückgekehrte Emigranten, begannen bereits im Herbst 1945 damit, ein neues Gemeindeleben entwickeln. Drei Jahre später reifte unter ihnen der Beschluß, ein »Haus zu bauen, um zu bleiben«. Dieses Haus, die kleine, 1950 geweihte Synagoge auf der Fiedlerstraße 3 in Dresden, war seitdem das religiöse Zentrum jüdischen Lebens in Dresden, obgleich sich die Anzahl der Gemeindemitglieder zwischen 1950 und 1990 von nahezu 200 auf 60 verringerte.
Fest in das heutige gesellschaftliche Leben Dresdens integriert, hat sich inzwischen die Mitgliederzahl der Religionsgemeinde auf der Grundlage staatlicher Abkommen zwischen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und der ehemaligen UdSSR über die Zuwanderung von Juden nach Deutschland auf 480 erhöht und wächst weiter. Translation - English [...] »Then and Now« - with these words Dr. Bernhard Beer, perhaps Dresden’s most important Jewish reformer, expressed his feelings while taking part in the consecration ceremony of the old synagogue on "Hasenberg", designed by Gottfried Semper, almost 161 years earlier. It can be assumed that Beer's intention in choosing those three words was to create a set phrase representing the dramatic history of Jews in Saxony and Dresden. A history, which can be traced from the first, merely tolerated, settlement of only a small number of Jewish families and services held only in private homes during the 18th century to the important legal reforms, formally granting equal civil rights to Jews, and a representative place of worship in an excellent location in the heart of the city. It is likely, however, that Bernhard Beer's "Then and Now" was also a reflection on the complicated controversial developments within the Jewish population itself. In serving as the title for this anthology, Beer's phrase refers to three hundred years of Jewish history in Dresden. Like the Jewish history in the rest Germany and in many European countries, it is a history full of dramatic events and murderous consequences, which could not have been foreseen and which must never be allowed to repeat themselves. At the same time, it is a history full of courage and hope for a new beginning, a new life in a society with stable social norms.
Only very few members of Dresden's original Iraelite religious community lived to see the end of the Shoa in May of 1945. Most of them had either perished or had been scattered to all corners of the earth. These few survivors, as well as 'newcomers' to Dresden (mainly those who had been rescued from concentration camps in other German cities or Eastern Europe as well as returning emigrants) began to revive Jewish community life in the fall of 1945. Three years later they arrived at the decision to “build a house so they would stay”. With its consecration in 1950, this small house – the synagogue at Fiedlerstraße 3 – became the center of Jewish life in Dresden, even though the congregation's numbers dropped from 200 to 60 between 1950 and 1990. Following political agreements between Germany and the former USSR on the immigration of Jews to Germany, the Jewish community - fully integrated into the social life of contempoary Dresden - has now reached 480 members and continues to grow.
