Introduction
Dalam sebuah reuni dengan teman-teman SMA pada tahun 2010, muncul ajakan untuk karaoke di salah satu tempat karaoke di Yogyakarta. Dari sekian banyak pilihan lagu yang ada pada playlist tempat karaoke tersebut, ada seorang teman yang request lagu dari OM.Sera. Tak menunggu berapa lama, alunan kendang bertempo cepat dari OM.Sera sudah terdengar di ruangan kami, mengiringi sebuah lagu cover version dari Rhoma Irama. Tak disangka, ternyata hampir semua teman laki-laki saya yang hadir tahu tentang lagu dan grup itu, kecuali saya. Selepas karaoke, kami pergi ke sebuah warung kopi. Obrolan tentang OM.Sera masih berlanjut hingga di sana. Cerita mereka bisa dikatakan sama, mengenal grup ini dari VCD yang diputar di bus, mendengarnya di pasar, dan bahkan di warnet (warung internet) pada masa-masa ketika masih menempuh kuliah S1.
Cerita tentang OM.Sera terlupakan hingga pada bulan Februari tahun ini, saya terpaksa naik bus malam untuk pulang ke Yogyakarta karena kereta api yang akan saya naiki mengalami kerusakan. Tak disangka, VCD player di dalam bus memainkan rekaman salah satu pentas OM.Sera. Ingatan saya kembali pada 2 tahun silam, ketika teman-teman asyik bercerita mengapa mereka suka pada grup kecil dari Gresik ini. Di perjalanan dari Solo-Yogyakarta itulah baru saya paham tentang iringan kendang jap khas OM.Sera, lewat penjelasan teman duduk saya di bus, seorang mahasiswa jurusan Pertanian yang berkuliah di Yogyakarta. Penjelasan singkat itu saja ternyata tidak cukup untuk membuat saya mengerti alasan di balik penyebutan diri orang-orang sebagai fans OM.Sera. Apakah benar hanya sekedar karena tabuhan kendang jap? Ataukah karena para penyanyinya yang masih muda dan tidak begitu norak ketika bergoyang? Lantas, apa saja yang dilakukan mereka untuk mengekspresikan rasa suka terhadap grup ini?
Dangdut Koplo OM. Sera
Banyak perdebatan seputar asal usul dangdut. Salah satu yang mendominasi adalah pendapat Sang Raja Dangdut, Rhoma Irama, bahwa genre ini berasal dari musik Melayu Deli di Sumatera Utara melalui asumsi yang bersumber dari silsilah kultural Kesultanan Deli hingga booming dangdut di tahun 1970. Di lain pihak, pendapat ini disanggah oleh Elvy Sukaesih, Sang Ratu Dangdut. Menurutnya, dangdut adalah musik asli Indonesia yang tidak memiliki kaitan sejarah dengan musik Melayu, namun justru banyak terpengaruh oleh musik India (Yampolsky, 1987:45; Weintraub, 2012:36).
Di luar perdebatan yang tak kunjung usai mengenai asal usul musik dangdut, ada satu hal yang nampaknya disetujui oleh banyak pihak. Dangdut tumbuh dan berkembang dalam stereotip sebagai musik kampungan, milik kelas menengah ke bawah. Disukai atau tidak, stereotip tersebut hadir sebagai bagian tidak terpisahkan dalam perkembangan dangdut, terutama ketika dangdut hadir di media massa (Weintraub, 2006:414; Browne, 2000; Mulyadi, 2009; Solihun:2004). Dapat dikatakan bahwa dangdut menjadi satu wacana sosial yang identik dengan proses eksklusi. Fans dangdut pun hampir selalu dikonstruksi dalam wacana di media sebagai ‘kerumunan’ massa yang tidak tidak terkontrol dan rawan amarah.
Selain wacana kampungan, genre ini juga menjadi arena perdebatan moralitas berkaitan dengan para penyanyi perempuannya. Tubuh seksi yang terbalut busana ketat, make up tebal, goyang erotis adalah serangkaian stigma negatif yang mengiringi kehadiran para penyanyi dangdut. Salah satu fenomena yang paling terkenal hingga sekarang adalah fenomena ‘goyang ngebor’ Inul Daratista pada Februari 2003. Penyanyi yang besar dari pentas dangdut koplo di daerah Jawa Timur ini seketika menjadi selebritis, mengalahkan senior-seniornya. Tubuh dan goyangannya menjadi bahasan di banyak forum, dari tayangan gosip infotainment hingga Majelis Ulama Indonesia (Weintraub, 2012: 200).
Kontroversi mengenai Inul si Goyang Ngebor tidak hanya melambungkan namanya, namun juga dangdut koplo. Ia ‘ngebor’ dengan iringan dangdut yang lebih rancak, tempo cepat dan irama yang menghentak, yang lebih dikenal dengan sebutan dangdut koplo . Varian dangdut yang selama ini tidak begitu dikenal publik, akhirnya ikut terangkat berkat popularitas Inul yang juga semakin menanjak. Istilah dangdut koplo sendiri lebih mengarah pada gaya pertunjukan dangdut yang memasukkan irama kendang dan tabla dalam tempo lebih cepat. Tidak ada lagu khusus yang dimainkan dalam dangdut koplo, karena semua jenis lagu bisa diaransemen ulang menjadi koplo (Weintraub, 2010:215-216). Pertunjukan dangdut koplo muncul dan menjadi terkenal di daerah Jawa Tengah dan Jawa Timur. Beberapa Orkes Melayu pengusungnya antara lain: Trio Macan (Lamongan), Palapa (Sidoarjo), Monata (Mojokerto), Sera (Gresik), Evita (Gresik), Sanjaya (Blora), Sakatto (Probolinggo), dan Putra Dewa (Tuban).
Salah satu yang terkenal dan sekaligus menjadi objek penelitian ini adalah OM. Sera. Nama ‘Sera’ adalah kepanjangan dari kata Selera Rakyat. Sera terbentuk tahun 2003 di Gresik, Jawa Timur diprakarasi oleh Moch. Sholeh dengan merekrut 9 orang sebagai pemain musik dan mengajak para penyanyi dangdut freelance yang tidak terikat pada grup manapun. Show perdana mereka sukses diselenggarakan pada 20 September 2003. Berkat penjualan CD hasil rekaman pertunjukan perdana mereka, grup yang awalnya hanya berpentas di lingkup kota-kota kecil di Jawa Timur kemudian merambah ke wilayah Jawa Tengah . Tidak butuh waktu lama bagi OM.Sera untuk dikenal di Jawa Tengah, bahkan lebih dikenal dari grup lain. Mereka tidak hanya berpentas untuk mengisi acara komersial namun juga untuk mengisi acara tradisi seperti sedekah laut atau sekaten.
Apabila ukuran eksistensi sebuah grup musik adalah kuantitas dan kualitas lagu ciptaan sendiri, maka OM.Sera masih kalah dibanding dengan grup lain. Grup ini masih memainkan lagu dari penyanyi lain untuk kemudian dibuat cover version dalam versi dangdut koplo, tidak seperti OM.Sagita yang dikenal masyarakat karena lagu Ngamen #1-7 atau Trio Macan yang sukses di ibu kota. Minimnya lagu ciptaan sendiri yang dibawakan ketika pentas tidak serta merta membuat para fans berpaling dari mereka.
Kelebihan grup ini adalah pada solidnya para fans dalam membentuk fandom. Seramania –sebutan bagi fans OM.Sera- tidak hanya bertemu ketika grup tersebut pentas. Mereka turut memanfaatkan situs jejaring sosial untuk membangun fandom. Terdapat lebih dari 70 fans page untuk OM.Sera di Facebook, melebihi jumlah fans page dari Orkes Melayu lain. Fans page yang ada tersebar di berbagai kota di Indonesia, dengan anggota yang berbeda tiap daerahnya. Mereka menggunakan fans page sebagai sarana untuk berbagi foto, video, jadwal pentas, dan link download lagu atau video terbaru. Kekompakan dan antusiasme Seramania dalam membangun fandom di Facebook merubah grup kecil ini menjadi sebuah grup besar di dunia maya. Diantara sekian banyak fans page Seramania, terdapat satu akun yang memiliki anggota paling banyak yakni Rised (Republik Sera Indonesia) dengan anggota sebanyak 4.273 orang.
Rised sebagai sebuah dangdut virtual fandom adalah fenomena yang menarik di Indonesia karena beberapa alasan. Pertama, internet telah menciptakan ruang baru untuk aktualisasi diri para fans dangdut. Stereotip dangdut sebagai musik kampungan dan fans yang turut dipersepsikan sebagai kaum yang tidak berpendidikan, seolah terbantahkan dengan munculnya fandom dangdut di situs jejaring sosial. Teknologi ternyata tidak hanya dimiliki oleh mereka yang berasal dari kelas atas saja. Kedua, ketiadaan figur utama sebagai objek fandom. Jika Rhoma Irama dipuja oleh para fans Soneta melebihi OM. Soneta, maka pada fandom OM.Sera tidak ada tokoh yang dipuja seperti itu. Mereka memuja Ipan si pengendang sama seperti mereka menyukai Via Vallen sang penyanyi. Ketiga, pola interaksi online pada akun Rised di Facebook secara tidak langsung didasari oleh pola interaksi offline antara OM.Sera dan Seramania pada pentas, lewat pemakaian bahasa-bahasa dan kode tertentu. Beranjak dari hal tersebut di atas, muncul dua pertanyaan penelitian. Pertama bagaimana bentuk dan identifikasi diri para fans di Rised sebagai sebuah dangdut virtual fandom. Kedua, seberapa jauh komunitas online ini dapat dikatakan bebas makna dan ‘cair’, mengingat bahwa ternyata masih ada sebuah sistem dan rezim kebenaran di masyarakat yang mengontrol mereka.
Litterature Review and Methodology
Dangdut telah menjadi objek penelitian sejak lama, baik yang dilakukan oleh peneliti dari dalam dan luar negeri. Tema-tema yang diangkat adalah seputar performance dangdut, sejarah, erotisme penyanyi, permasalahan selera kultural, kelas sosial, politik, dan nasionalisme (Frederick, 1982 :103-130 ; Pioquinto, 1995:59-89 ; Sen&Hill, 2000:175; Weintraub, 2006: 414; Baulch, 2010:8-9; Browne 2000:1; Murray 1991:10; Heryanto, 2008:26). Dari sekian banyak penelitian mengenai dangdut, belum ada yang benar-benar berfokus pada fans dangdut, meski mereka adalah sosok utama di balik keberhasilan dangdut untuk dapat bertahan hingga saat ini.
Komunitas musik online juga telah diteliti sebagai sebuah komunitas yang sama nyatanya dengan yang ada di ruang offline (Tysloff, 2003; Baym, 2007), sehingga banyak fans memanfaatkannya untuk membentuk fandom online (Wiltse, 2004; Steinkuehler, 2007; Theberge ,2006). Kekuatan fandom online dibanding fandom offline adalah kemampuannya untuk menghilangkan jarak yang ada antara fans dan idola sehingga interaksi yang ada lebih cair dibanding sebelumnya (Sen, 2010; Chun, 2008; Soukup, 2006; Sanderson, Jimmy and Cheong, 2010; Marwick, 2011)
Salah satu metode yang dapat digunakan untuk meneliti budaya fans di dunia virtual adalah etnografi online (online ethnography). Metode ini memiliki kesamaan dengan metode etnografi biasa, hanya saja pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan melihat aktivitas responden di dunia virtual, berupa posting atau partisipasi mereka pada komunitas online. Metode ini pertama kali dipopulerkan oleh Christine Hine dengan melihat bahwa internet menjadi ruang budaya baru, di mana kerja etnografi dapat digunakan di sana untuk melihat proses budaya yang sedang terjadi (Hine, 2000:9).
Penelitian ini memakai salah satu metode etnografi online yang disebut dengan netnografi. Metode ini dikembangkan oleh Kozinets sebagai perluasan dari metode penelitian marketing online untuk melihat persepsi konsumen di dunia virtual. Netnografi mengadaptasi etnografi tradisional yang digabungkan dengan penelitian budaya dan komunitas pada CMC (Computer Mediated Communication). Lewat netnografi, peneliti dapat mengetahui realitas online yang terjadi pada sebuah komunitas online (Kozinets, 2010; Kozinets, 2002). Metode ini melibatkan prosedur kerja lapangan (fieldwork) yang sama seperti etnografi tradisional, hanya saja semua dilakukan di ruang virtual. Peneliti pun harus memiliki kecakapan yang sama dengan etnografer di ruang offline, antara lain untuk menentukan situs online yang akan diteliti, negosiasi untuk bisa bergabung dengan komunitas online yang dituju, mengolah data netnografi, analisa dan interpretasi data.
Penelitian ini memakai persepsi ‘lurker’ yang juga dikembangkan oleh Kozinets pada metode netnografi. Maksudnya, peneliti tidak terlibat secara langsung pada interaksi di komunitas online yang diamati, namun hanya melihat serta melakukan observasi terhadap bagaimana interaksi yang terjadi secara online. Tahapan kerja operasional dalam penelitian ini diawali dengan memilih objek penelitian yakni Rised atau Republik Sera Indonesia, fans page untuk komunitas fandom dangdut OM. Sera di situs jejaring sosial Facebook. Setelah itu, dipilihlah 12 responden secara acak dari daftar anggota fandom tersebut. Fokus pengamatan yakni pada interaksi mereka di fans page Rised, serta aktivitas di akun mereka sendiri sebagai pengejawantahan rasa suka sebagai fans OM.Sera. Observasi dilanjutkan dengan in depth interview lewat fasilitas pesan (message) di Facebook serta pertemuan secara offline dengan responden.
Internet dan Kemunculan Virtual Fandom
Diakui atau tidak, kehadiran internet sebagai sebuah media baru telah merubah segala aspek kehidupan manusia terutama karena salah satu fungsi lain dari internet berkaitan erat dengan esensi pokok pada hubungan masyarakat, yakni komunikasi antar manusia. Berkat internet, komunikasi menjadi lebih intens yang ditandai dengan hilangnya sekat ruang dan waktu (Manasian, 2003:4). Salah satu efek kehadiran internet adalah bermunculannya komunitas virtual dengan beragam bentuk dan tujuan. Ruang-ruang tersebut hadir sebagai alternatif berkurangnya ruang publik di tengah laju pertumbuhan masyarakat urban. Mereka yang tidak memiliki waktu lebih untuk bersosialisasi di dunia nyata kemudian memilih ruang-ruang virtual tersebut sebagai media sosialisasi (Brown, 2002).
Komunitas online virtual (VOC/virtual online community) dapat dijelaskan sebagai sebuah ruang di mana orang-orang bertemu, berbicara, berdiskusi panjang lebar dengan memakai perasaan mereka, untuk membentuk sebuah jaringan atau hubungan personal di dunia virtual (Rheingold, 1993:5). Komunitas ini dapat dikatakan sebagai satu komunitas yang ‘terbayang’ sebagaimana konsep imagined communities yang dikemukakan oleh Benedict Anderson. Pada analisisnya mengenai hubungan nation-state, ia berargumen bahwa konsep komunitas yang sebenarnya, ada pada imajinasi dan bayangan para anggota di dalamnya. Meski ia tidak pernah secara gamblang membahas komunitas virtual, namun sejatinya semua komunitas yang ‘terbayang’ pada kenyataannya adalah ‘virtual’. Faktor determinan yang membentuk sebuah komunitas tidak pernah ada secara nyata, namun ia ada dalam wujud identifikasi para anggota sebagai anggota di dalam komunitas tersebut (Anderson, 1983:15). Jika persamaan persepsi adalah patokan yang digunakan untuk mengetahui unsur pengikat sebuah komunitas, maka komunitas itu dengan sendirinya adalah sebuah entitas virtual. Ketika dibawa pada konteks masa kini, saat teknologi informasi telah berkembang dengan cepat, unsur pembentuk imajinasi akan sebuah komunitas bukan lagi koran atau majalah namun internet (Feenberg and Bakardjieva, 2004:38).
Sebagai bagian dari komunitas virtual online, situs jejaring sosial muncul dengan tujuan untuk menciptakan ruang komunikasi baru antar individu yang sudah saling mengenal, serta untuk menemukan teman baru. Situs jejaring sosial ini didefinisikan oleh Boyd dan Ellison sebagai jaringan berbasis website yang membuat individu dapat melakukan hal-hal sebagai berikut: membuat profil atau identitas publik dalam batasan sistem jaringan; memilih pengguna lain dengan siapa mereka ingin berbagi informasi; melihat dan ‘berkunjung’ ke profil lain dalam sistem jaringan yang sama (Boyd&Ellison, 2007:211)
Mereka yang ingin tergabung dalam situs jejaring sosial harus membuat profil berisi informasi-informasi dasar (termasuk foto atau hobi) yang ingin dibagi pada publik. Profil itulah yang nantinya akan menjadi identitas bagi individu di situs jejaring sosial. Sebagai pelengkap, mereka harus menambahkan kontak lain dari situs jejaring sosial yang sama, yang berfungsi sebagai teman untuk berinteraksi. Pemilik akun harus mengirim permintaan pertemanan kepada akun lainnya. Apabila permintaan itu disetujui maka mereka akan terkoneksi di situs tersebut, vice à versa.
Salah satu situs jejaring sosial yang populer dengan jumlah pengguna mencapai 1 milliar orang di seluruh dunia adalah Facebook. Situs tersebut diperkenalkan pertama kali pada 2004 sebagai sebuah situs pertemanan virtual bagi mahasiswa Universitas Harvard (Cassidy, 2006). Satu tahun kemudian Facebook dapat diakses oleh publik tanpa harus terikat pada institusi apapun, meski demikian konsep ‘private network’ masih tetap dipertahankan. Misalnya, mereka yang ingin mengakses komunitas tertentu di Facebook harus meminta izin pada administator terlebih dahulu.
Daya tarik utama Facebook bukan hanya terletak pada kemampuannya untuk tetap membuat orang-orang terhubung namun juga fitur-fitur tambahan yang dimilikinya, yang tidak ada pada situs jejaring sosial sebelumnya seperti Friendster. Salah satunya adalah aplikasi yang memungkinkan pengguna untuk mencantumkan kegemaran mereka terhadap sesuatu. Pada tingkat lanjut bahkan bisa dikembangkan menjadi sebuah fans page, untuk mempertemukan pengguna dengan orang lain yang memiliki kegemaran serupa. Hal itulah yang menjadi cikal bakal berkembangnya fandom di Facebook.
Terminologi fans selama ini sering disamakan dengan audiens, walau keduanya memiliki pengertian yang berbeda. Fans adalah sekelompok audiens yang tidak hanya berperan pasif dan berhenti pada aktivitas ‘menonton’saja, namun juga memproduksi produk budaya baru sebagai bentuk penerimaan atau resepsi atas apa yang mereka lihat (Bielby, Harrington & Bielby, 1999: 35). Secara sederhana, fans adalah mereka yang dapat menjelaskan informasi secara detail mengenai objek fandom mereka dan dapat membuktikan rasa suka dengan mengutip bait, lirik, bab, maupun bagian dari objek fandom (Hills 2002: IX). Selain itu, perbedaan fans dengan audiens pada umumnya adalah pada tingkat pembelanjaan untuk benda-benda yang terkait dengan objek fandom. Seorang fans akan rela membeli cinderamata baik berupa kaos, topi, bahkan poster sebagai sebuah pengikat antara dirinya dengan objek fandom
Di luar itu, masih banyak pula yang melihat fans sebagai sebuah patologi, tidak hanya dari sudut pandang akademis namun juga media massa. Bahkan fans yang dikategorikan ‘normal’ oleh sesamanya, akan dipandang sebagai individu yang memiliki obsesi terhadap objek fandom oleh orang di luar mereka (Jensen, 1992:9). Terlepas dari pro dan kontra, budaya fans telah menciptakan alternatif bagi terciptanya sebuah identitas baru bagi individu (Grossberg 1992: 64). Lewat identitas baru itu mereka membuat garis batas antara ‘kita’ yang ada di dalam komunitas dan ‘mereka’ yang di luar komunitas.
Dangdut Fan Identification
Berdasar kategori popularitas selebriti yang dibuat oleh Chris Rojek, penyanyi dan grup dangdut masuk ke dalam bentuk ‘achieved’ celebrity dan ‘attributed’ celebrity . Ada penyanyi dangdut yang populer karena talenta mereka dalam bermain serta menciptakan lagu, seperti Rhoma Irama, Elvy Sukaesih, Camelia Malik, ataupun Mansyur S. Di luar itu ada pula selebriti baru di dunia dangdut yang menjadi populer karena media mem-blow up berita mengenai mereka, seperti misalnya Inul Daratista, Dewi Perssik, atau Julia Perez. Menariknya, hampir semua penyanyi dangdut yang menjadi objek fandom adalah penyanyi solo yang berkarir di Jakarta, kecuali Rhoma Irama dengan OM.Soneta yang menjadi pengiringnya selama berpuluh tahun. Meski demikian, ternyata grup tersebut tidak lebih populer dengan Rhoma Irama. Ia lah yang menjadi objek fandom bagi SFC atau Soneta Fans Club. Dengan demikian, kemunculan Seramania yang mendirikan fandom untuk OM.Sera, sebuah grup dangdut kecil dari kota kecil di Jawa Timur menjadi satu hal yang menarik untuk dibahas.
Fandom OM.Sera tidak pernah dideklarasikan secara nyata pada ruang offline. Kebanyakan dari Seramania hanya bertemu ketika ada pentas OM.Sera di daerah masing-masing. Seringnya bertemu secara tidak sengaja membuat beberapa fans saling mengenal satu dengan lainnya namun tidak pernah ada inisiatif untuk mendirikan fandom . Salah satu kendala ketiadaan fandom pada ruang offline adalah karena keterbatasan waktu dan lokasi pertunjukan grup ini. Mereka hanya pentas selama 3 jam di tiap tempat untuk kemudian berpindah ke tempat lainnya pada hari berikutnya. Tidak mudah bagi Seramania untuk mendekati penyanyi maupun pemain musik OM.Sera. Ada yang harus mengikuti pentas keliling mereka di Jawa Timur sampai akhirnya bisa berkenalan dan berjabat tangan dengan para personil OM.Sera , tapi tak sedikit fans yang puas hanya dengan membeli VCD rekaman-rekaman mereka secara rutin atau mendownload lagu-lagu mereka dari internet .
Awal perkenalan para fans dengan OM.Sera hampir bisa dikatakan serupa. Mereka mengenal grup ini dari VCD rekaman pentas yang banyak beredar di pasaran. OM.Sera memang memakai metode ini untuk membuat masyarakat mengenal mereka dibanding dengan promosi di radio maupun televisi. Cara tersebut efektif untuk menarik minat masyarakat awam. Banyak diantara mereka yang kemudian mendownload lagu serta video grup ini di internet untuk kemudian dibagi pada teman lainnya . Bahkan dengan cara terakhir tersebut ada yang semula tidak suka dangdut sama sekali kemudian tertarik karena hampir setiap hari ‘diracuni’ oleh temannya untuk mendengarkan OM.Sera .
Minimnya lagu ciptaan mereka yang boooming di pasaran tidak serta merta membuat rasa suka fans berkurang. Paling tidak ada dua hal utama yang menjadi daya tarik grup ini menurut para fans. Pertama, variasi musik yang berbeda dengan grup serupa yang mengangkat irama dangdut koplo. Beberapa fans mengakui bahwa tabuhan kendang dan tabla grup ini berbeda dengan yang lain, bahkan mereka bisa mengenalinya meski tanpa melihat rekaman video . Tabuhan kendang ‘jap’ ditambah dengan sentuhan à la house music pada beberapa lagu garapannya menjadi penanda khas grup ini. Koplo Jap atau Dangdut Tabla juga diakui oleh grup ini sebagai daya tarik utama pada garapan lagu-lagunya . Selain itu, mereka mampu mengolah semua jenis lagu menjadi lagu dangdut koplo, baik itu lagu Indonesia, Inggris, maupun Arab.
Daya tarik kedua dari grup ini adalah personilnya, termasuk penyanyi dan pemain musik. Seperti banyak grup dangdut lainnya, grup ini tidak memiliki penyanyi tetap. Tercatat ada lebih dari 12 penyanyi perempuan pernah tergabung dalam grup ini sejak pertama berdiri hingga sekarang. Dari formasi yang terus berganti, saat ini ada 5 penyanyi tetap yakni Wiwik Sagita, Via Vallen, Yuni Ayunda, Lara Silvi, dan Ina Samantha . Tidak sedikit fans tertarik pada OM. Sera karena jajaran penyanyinya yang masih muda, cantik, bersuara bagus, dan tidak norak ketika di atas panggung .
Sama seperti yang terjadi pada para penyanyinya, pada awal berdirinya, para pemain musik OM.Sera juga tidak pernah dalam formasi yang tetap dikarenakan banyak dari mereka yang masih tergabung dengan grup lain. Baru 5 tahun sesudahnya, tepatnya pada 2008 mereka memiliki pemain musik tetap yang bertahan hingga sekarang. Formasi pemain musik yang tidak berganti selama hampir 4 tahun dan selalu terlihat akrab, atraktif, asyik di atas panggung ternyata menjadi daya tarik bagi beberapa fans. Banyak yang rela menempuh perjalanan berjam-jam dan menunggu hingga pentas berakhir hanya untuk bisa berfoto bersama para pemain musiknya. Permainan musik mereka pun dianggap keren, hingga menginspirasi salah satu fans untuk membentuk sebuah grup musik dangdut koplo .
Sebelum era digital, dunia selebriti adalah hal yang mustahil disentuh oleh orang di luar mereka. Fans hanya bisa bersentuhan dengan idola lewat media cetak dan elektronik dengan kemungkinan yang kecil untuk bisa berinteraksi langsung. Seiring perkembangan teknologi, seorang selebriti dapat membangun basis bagi fans secara langsung (Halperin, 2011). Dalam hal ini, situs jejaring sosial menjadi salah satu penolong bagi terciptanya interaksi digital antara fans dengan idola. Bagi artis atau selebriti yang baru saja naik daun, kehadiran situs jejaring sosial menjadi sarana promosi untuk menaikkan pamor sekaligus mencari fans baru. Bagi mereka yang sudah terkenal dan mendapat nama di industri hiburan, situs jejaring sosial bermanfaat untuk menjaga hubungan baik dengan fans (Thomson, 2006; Duchesne, 2010).
Salah satu fans page OM.Sera di Facebook adalah Rised (Republik Sera Indonesia) yang mulai bergabung di situs ini pada 6 Desember 2008. Sampai tahun 2010, akun ini tidak begitu banyak melakukan posting yang berkaitan dengan OM.Sera, meski sudah memakai nama Rised. Satu tahun sesudahnya, akun ini mulai banyak mengupdate berita tentang OM.Sera, share link download lagu dan video, serta upload foto-foto para personil OM.Sera. Hal itulah yang kemudian menjadi daya tarik bagi para fans lain untuk bergabung dengan akun ini.
Dalam hubungannya dengan interaksi fans-objek fandom, ruang online memberi kemungkinan besar terhadap interaksi yang lebih cair dibanding pada ruang offline. Fans akan mengalami proses identifikasi diri sekaligus membentuk identitas baru sebagai individu yang berada dalam dunia yang sama dengan objek fandom mereka. Pola identifikasi diri fans OM. Sera berdasar hasil wawancara, pengamatan pada akun pribadi responden, dan posting yang dibuat oleh responden pada akun Rised akan dijabarkan di bawah ini .

Dari keseluruhan responden, hanya ada 1 responden bernama Mahatma yang dapat dikategorikan sebagai casual fans. Ia mendapatkan lagu-lagu OM.Sera dari orang lain, tanpa berusaha untuk mencari sendiri. Latar belakangnya sebagai seorang guru yang saat ini sedang menempuh pendidikan S2 teologi di sebuah universitas ternama di Yogyakarta mendorongnya untuk membuat sebuah garis batas yang jelas antara identitas diri dengan OM.Sera. Pilihan untuk masuk menjadi anggota Rised di Facebook pun bukan atas kesadaran pribadi namun karena disarankan oleh seorang teman. Setelah tergabung, ia sama sekali belum pernah membuat posting di Rised.
Loyal fans pada penelitian berjumlah 3 orang yakni Hendra –lulusan pascasarjana pengkajian seni rupa- ; Danang –sarjana Sastra Jawa- , dan Fajar –mahasiswa Teknik Mesin. Mereka menyukai grup ini dan menjadikannya sebagai bagian dari identifikasi diri hanya pada beberapa kalangan terdekat saja. Secara berkala mereka akan mendatangi pentas grup ini asal bersama dengan teman-teman. Ketiganya bergabung dengan Rised atas kesadaran sendiri dan tidak hanya bergabung dengan satu akun fandom OM.Sera saja. Meskipun demikian, mereka bertiga tidak menjadikan OM.Sera sebagai satu-satunya objek fandom.
Dua tipe fans di atas memiliki kesamaan pola yakni masih adanya rasa malu untuk mengakui diri sebagai bagian dari fandom OM.Sera. Fajar mengakui bahwa ia tidak ingin terlihat oleh keluarga dan teman-teman kuliahnya sedang menonton pentas OM.Sera. Meski ia memiliki koleksi berpuluh lagu dan video OM.Sera, tapi ia tetap tidak mau mencantumkan OM. Sera sebagai preferensi musik di akun Facebooknya. Alasan yang hampir serupa dikemukakan oleh Mahatma, konsumsi atas musik dangdut OM.Sera hanya dilakukan ketika ia bersama dengan teman-teman sedang berkaraoke, sebagai bagian dari aktivitas bersenang-senang. Selepas itu, ia akan kembali lagi pada preferensi musiknya yakni jazz. Bagi Hendra dan Danang, rasa malu itu terlihat dengan pilihan sikap untuk pasif di akun Rised. Keduanya tidak malu mengakui diri sebagai fans OM.Sera pada ruang offline, namun hal itu justru tidak dimunculkan sama sekali dalam aktivitas online mereka di Facebook. Mereka tidak ingin aktivitas fandom di Facebook diketahui oleh teman-teman mereka. Hal itu memperlihatkan bahwa bagi custom dan loyal fans, masih ada garis batas yang jelas antara identitas diri dengan identitas objek fandom. Mereka tidak ingin ada percampuran antara keduanya.
Jenis fans ketiga adalah yang paling banyak dijumpai pada penelitian ini. Bagi die hard fans, identitas diri sudah lebur menjadi satu dengan objek fandom yang ditandai dengan penambahan nama objek fandom pada nama akun pribadi mereka. Terdapat 5 responden yang memakai embel-embel ‘Sera’ pada nama mereka dan hanya 2 responden yang tidak mencantumkan nama tersebut . Tujuannya adalah untuk menunjukkan pemujaan terhadap objek fandom. Aktivitas mereka pada akun Rised cukup bervariasi, mulai dari berbagi foto penyanyi atau pemain musik OM.Sera, meng-upload lagu dan video rekaman pertunjukan yang didapat dari situs lain, dan berbagi jadwal pentas grup ini. Mereka datang dari latar belakang pendidikan yang berbeda, dengan usia di bawah 30 tahun. Bagi mereka, benda-benda yang berhubungan dengan objek fandom adalah cultural capital yang berharga, yang akan membedakannya dengan fans lain. Oleh karenanya, mereka akan berlomba-lomba untuk menjadi yang pertama untuk meng-upload hal-hal yang berkaitan dengan objek fandom.
Tipologi fans keempat adalah dysfunctional fans yang hanya ditemui pada diri seorang responden saja, Lego Mengejar Badai. Bagai laki-laki di bawah usia 30 tahun yang bekerja freelance pada sebuah EO dan jasa catering ini, OM.Sera tidak hanya merupakan objek fandom namun juga bagian dari identitas diri. Sebisa mungkin ia ingin turut menjadi bagian dari sejarah grup ini. Salah satu wujudnya adalah dengan menjadi tim pengamanan pada pentas grup ini, tugasnya adalah membantu tim pengamanan dari kepolisian untuk menjaga area pertunjukan. Lewat hal itu, ia menjalin hubungan yang akrab dengan para personil OM.Sera. Jadi, meski ia adalah pekerja biasa di dunia offline, namun ia menjadi figur penting dalam fandom OM.Sera.
Dari klasifikasi di atas, terlihat bahwa partisipasi fans di akun Rised sebagai fandom OM. Sera berbeda antara satu dengan lainnya. Perbedaan itu juga terlihat dari bagaimana mereka mengkonstruksi diri sebagai seorang fans. Dengan kata lain, tingkat partisipasi mereka pada akun Rised atau keaktifan mereka mengupdate hal-hal mengenai OM.Sera di akun pribadi akan mempengaruhi tingkat ‘pemujaan’ terhadap OM.Sera sebagai objek fandom. Semakin sering mereka mengupdate, semakin besar kecintaan mereka pada grup ini, vice à versa.
Temuan menarik lainnya yang didapatkan adalah, pola interaksi yang terjadi pada akun Rised maupun posting mengenai OM.Sera pada akun pribadi responden adalah pemindahan interaksi offline ketika pentas pada interaksi online. Hal tersebut dapat dijumpai dengan pemakaian bahasa Jawa ngoko saat posting untuk lebih menegaskan egaliter dan tidak ada hierarki tertentu seperti yang biasa dilakukan oleh para penyanyi dan MC OM.Sera ketika pentas. Selain itu, di beberapa posting muncul sapaan pada fans lain berupa onomatope dari bunyi tabuhan kendang. Bagi mereka, kendang adalah ciri khas dari OM.Sera, sehingga mereka terus mereproduksi bunyi tersebut meski tidak sedang menyaksikan pentas maupun mendengarkan lagu OM.Sera.
Pola interaksi pada Rised sebagai fandom OM. Sera yang terbesar di Facebook adalah pola interaksi searah. Dalam arti, para personil OM.Sera justru jarang berinteraksi di akun ini. Mereka lebih aktif menyapa para fans lewat akun pribadi. Selain itu, tidak semua anggota yang tergabung dalam Rised berpartisipasi secara aktif di akun tersebut, hanya ada beberapa dari mereka yang secara aktif mengirim posting di grup ini. Hal itu dapat kita lihat pada tabel posting yang dilakukan oleh anggota Rised di akun Rised pada bulan April s.d Juli 2012.

Aktivitas yang paling sering dilakukan adalah upload video OM.Sera, baik yang didapat dari situs Youtube maupun rekaman mereka sendiri. Aktivitas kedua adalah upload foto personil OM.Sera yang mereka dapat dari berbagai sumber, antara lain mencari di internet, memotret sendiri, atau copy paste dari akun pribadi para personil OM.Sera. Foto yang di upload tidak selalu foto ketika mereka pentas, namun banyak pula foto saat personil OM.Sera menjalani hari-hari biasa di luar pentas. Lewat aktivitas demikian, mereka merasa memiliki kedekatan dengan objek fandom, tanpa peduli apakah objek fandom akan memperhatikan mereka atau tidak.
Oleh para akademisi bidang komunikasi, aktivitas demikian disebut dengan Parasocial Innteraction. Konsep ini mengacu pada proses di mana audiens terkoneksi, mempersepsikan diri, dan terhubung dengan figur-figur yang muncul di media massa. (Horton & Wohl 1956). Hubungan tersebut masuk ke dalam pola komunikasi interpersonal yang asimetris (asymmetrical interpersonal communication) karena audiens dapat melihat figur kesukaan mereka di media, namun tidak sebaliknya (Rubin & McHugh 1987; Shepherd, 2009: 156). Semakin sering para fans melihat foto-foto, mendengar lagu, melihat video, dan mengupload hal-hal mengenai objek fandom maka keterikatan itu akan semakin kuat.
Translation - English Sera’s Republic of Indonesia : Virtual Dangdut Fandom in Indonesia
Introduction
In a reunion with my friends from high school in 2012, an invitation to go to a karaoke place in Yogyakarta came out. Out of so many songs in the playlist the place had, a friend requested a song from OM.Sera. A while later, the upbeat kendang (Indonesian traditional double-headed drum) rhythm filled the room, accompanying a cover version of Rhoma Irama’s song. Surprisingly, it turned out every male friend who came along were familiar with the song and the group, except for me. Subsequently, after the karaoke, we went to a coffee shop, in which the conversation about OM.Sera resumed. My friends’ stories were basically the same—they found out about this group from the VCDs played in buses, heard their songs in markets, and even in internet cafes during their undergraduate years.
The story about OM.Sera was forgotten until last February, when I had to take a night bus to come back to Yogyakarta because the train I was supposed to take broke down. To my surprise, the VCD player in the bus played the recording of one of OM.Sera’s shows. My memories went back to two years ago, when my friends enthusiastically told me the reasons they liked this small group from Gresik. During the trip from Solo to Yogyakarta, I began to understand OM.Sera’s typical kendang jap accompaniment, owing to the person sitting next to me on the bus, a student of Agriculture Department studying inYogyakarta. The brief explanation alone was not enough to make me understand the reasons behind people’s claiming as OM.Sera’s fans. Was it really just because the beat of the kendang jap? Or was it because of the young singers who didn’t look very tacky when dancing? In addition, what have they done to express their fondness of this group?
Dangdut Koplo OM. Sera
There are many debates on where dangdut is from. One dominating opinion is that of the King of Dangdut’s, Rhoma Irama, which states that this genre originated from Deli Malayan music in North Sumatera based on an assumption whose source is the cultural pedigree of Deli Sultanate until the booming of dangdut in 1970. On the other hand, Elvy Sukaesih, the Queen of Dangdut, disagrees with this opinion. She believes that dangdut is a type of music native to Indonesia which is not related historically to Mayalan music, but is heavily influenced by Indian music (Yampolsky, 1987:45; Weintraub, 2012:36).
Outside of the seemingly endless debates on the origin of dangdut music, one thing is generally agreed on. Dangdut grew and developed in a stereotype as countrified music that belonged to the middle and low class. Like it or not, the stereotype exists as an inseparable part in the development of dangdut, especially when it appears on mass media (Weintraub, 2006:414; Browne, 2000; Mulyadi, 2009; Solihun:2004). We can say that dangdut became a social discourse commonly correlated with a process of exclusion. Dangdut fans are almost always constructed in discourses in the media as an uncontrollable and awfully bad-tempered ‘huddle’.
Other than an object of a countrified discourse, this genre has also become a subject of morality debates regarding its female singers. Sexy bodies wrapped in skin-tight outfits, thick make up, and erotic dance are a chain of negative stigma that accompanies the presence of dangdut singers. One of the most renowned phenomenon to this day is Inul Daratista’s ‘goyang ngebor’(‘drilling’ dance) on February 2003. The singer that climbed her career from dangdut koplo stages in the East Java areas immediately became a celebrity, her fame surpassing that of her precedents. Her body and dancing became a hot issue in many forums, from infotainment programs to the Indonesian Ulema Council (Weintraub, 2012: 200).
Controversy regarding Inul the Goyang Ngebor didn’t only heave her name to fame. It also popularized dangdut koplo. She ‘drilled’ with the accompaniment of more dynamic dangdut, faster tempo and stomping rhythms, better known with the term dangdut koplo . The particular variant of dangdut music that hadn’t been famous before was eventually raised to the surface owing to Inul’s escalating popularity. The term dangdut koplo itself refers to the style of dangdut performances that include kendang and tabla rhythms in a faster tempo. There is no particular song needed to play dangdut koplo, since every song can be re-arranged into koplo (Weintraub, 2010:215-216). Dangdut koplo performances emerged and became famous in areas in Central Java and East Java. Several Orkes Melayu (literally means ‘Malay’ musical band, the term is commonly used by musical bands specializing in playing dangdut music) concentrating on dangdut koplo are: Trio Macan (Lamongan), Palapa (Sidoarjo), Monata (Mojokerto), Sera (Gresik), Evita (Gresik), Sanjaya (Blora), Sakatto (Probolinggo), and Putra Dewa (Tuban).
One among the famous Orkes Melayu that became the object of this research is OM. Sera. The name ‘Sera’ is an abbreviation of Selera Rakyat (literally means people’s tastes). Sera was formed in 2003 in Gresik, East Java, pioneered by Moch. Sholeh by recruiting 9 persons as music players and taking on their shows freelance dangdut singers that were not affiliated with any other group. Their first performance was successfully delivered on September 20, 2003. Due to the selling of the CD of their first performance, the group that started off by performing in the scope of small towns in East Java began to expand to the Central Java area . It did not take long for OM.Sera to be famous in Central Java, even more famous than other groups. They did not only perform in commercial events but also in traditional events like sedekah laut (literally means sea alms, a ritual in which people sweep offerings out to the sea) or sekaten (a Javanese traditional ceremony, festival, and fair commemorating the birthday of prophet Muhammad).
If the standard of a musical group’s existence is the quantity and quality of the songs they composed on their own, then OM.Sera is still behind compared to other groups. This group still plays songs from other groups, which they make the cover version in dangdut koplo, unlike OM.Sagita that is famous for their song called Ngamen #1-7 or Trio Macan that has become successful in Jakarta. The modest number of songs they composed on their own that are performed on stage does not drive their fans away to leave them.
This group’s superiority compared to others is the solidity of their fans in forming a fandom. Seramania –the term used to refer to OM.Sera’s fans- do not only meet during the group’s performance. They also use social network websites to build their fandom. There are more than 70 fan pages for OM.Sera on Facebook, surpassing the number of fan pages of other Orkes Melayu. Their fan pages are spread out around Indonesia, with different members in each region. They use the fan pages as a means to share photos, videos, performance schedules, and download links of latest songs or videos. Seramania’s solidarity and enthusiasm in building a fandom on Facebook turned the small group big in the cyber world. Among the many Seramania fan pages, one that has the biggest number of members is Rised (Republik Sera Indonesia (Sera’s Republic of Indonesia) with as many as 4.273 members.
Rised as a virtual dangdut fandom is an interesting phenomenon in Indonesia for several reasons. Firstly, the internet has created a new space for dangdut fans’s self-actualization. It was as though the stereotype that takes dangdut as countrified music and views the fans as uneducated people were refuted by the emergence of dangdut fandoms on social network websites. It turned out that technology did not belong to those of the higher class only. Secondly is the absence of a main figure as the object of the fandom. While Rhoma Irama is worshipped by Soneta’s fans more than OM. Soneta, OM.Sera does not have such figure worshipped that way. They worship Ipan the kendang player like they adore Via Vallen the singer. Third, the online interaction patterns on Rised’s account on Facebook is indirectly based on the offline interaction between OM.Sera and Seramania in performances, using certain languages and codes. Two research questions emerged based on the aforementioned points. The first one is what the shape and self-identification of the fans on Rised as a virtual dangdut fandom are. Second, how far this online community can be considered free of meaning and ‘fluid’, considering the fact that there are still systems and regimes of truth in the society that control them.
Litterature Review and Methodology
Dangdut has long been an object of studies done by researchers from within and outside the country. The themes brought up are about dangdut performances, history, singers’ sensuality, cultural tastes problems, social classes, politics and nationalism (Frederick, 1982 :103-130 ; Pioquinto, 1995:59-89 ; Sen&Hill, 2000:175; Weintraub, 2006: 414; Baulch, 2010:8-9; Browne 2000:1; Murray 1991:10; Heryanto, 2008:26). Among many studies done on dangdut, none has thoroughly focused on dangdut fans, even though they are the main figure behind dangdut’s success in surviving up to this day.
Online music community has also been studied as a community as real as that of the offline world (Tysloff, 2003; Baym, 2007), hence the huge number of fans using it to create online fandoms (Wiltse, 2004; Steinkuehler, 2007; Theberge,2006). The power online fandoms possess compared to offline fandoms is their ability to eliminate the distance between the fans and the idols so that their interactions becomes more fluid than ever (Sen, 2010; Chun, 2008; Soukup, 2006; Sanderson, Jimmy and Cheong, 2010; Marwick, 2011)
One of the methods applicable in the research of the culture of fans in the virtual world is online ethnography. This method is rather similar with the regular ethnography method, only the data collecting is done by observing the respondents’ activities in the virtual world, such as their postings or participation in online communities. This method was first popularized by Christine Hine by observing that internet had become a new culture space, in which ethnographical work can be used to observe the cultural process taking place (Hine, 2000:9).
This research used one of the online ethnography methods named netnography. This method was developed by Kozinets as an expansion of online marketing research methods in order to observe the consumers’ perceptions in the virtual world. Netnography adapted the traditional ethnography combined with the research of culture and community on CMC (Computer Mediated Communication). Through netnography, researchers can determine the online reality occurring in an online community (Kozinets, 2010; Kozinets, 2002). This method entails a fieldwork procedure similar with that of traditional ethnography, the only difference would be that the procedure in netnography is done in the virtual space. Researchers also have to possess the same ability with that of ethnographers in the offline space in order to, inter alia, determine which online websites that are going to be studied, perform negotiation in order to join the targeted online communities, process the ethnography data, and also perform data analysis and interpretation.
This research used the ‘lurker’ perception that was also developed by Kozinets on netnography methods. It means that researchers are not directly involved in the interactions of the observed online community, but they only watch and observe the way the interactions happen online. The operational phases in this research started with the selection of the object of the research, that is Rised or Sera’s Republic of Indonesia, fan page for the OM. Sera dangdut fandom community on a social network website entitled Facebook. After that, 12 respondents were chosen randomly from the list of the fandom members. The focus of observation was on their interactions on Rised’s fan page and their activities on their own account as a manifestation of their fondness as OM.Sera’s fans. The observation was then followed by in depth interviews via the message service on Facebook and offline meetings with the respondents.
The Internet and the Emergence of Virtual Fandoms
Recognized or not, the presence of the internet as a new media has changed every aspect in human life, especially because one of internet’s other functions is strongly related with the primary essence of public relations, that is human communication. Owing to the internet, communication has become more intense, shown by the disappearance of the space and time partition (Manasian, 2003:4). One of the effects of the presence of the internet is the emergence of virtual communities in various shapes and purposes. These spaces emerged as an alternative of the reduction of public space in the midst of the urban community growth rate. Therefore, those who do not have more time to socialize in the real world choose these virtual spaces as socialization media (Brown, 2002).
Virtual Online Community (VOC) can be described as a space in which people meet, chat, and have long discussions using their feelings, in order to form a personal network or relationship in the virtual world (Rheingold, 1993:5). This community can also be considered as an ‘imagined’ community, referring to the concept of imagined communities coined by Benedict Anderson. In his analysis on nation-state relations, he argues that the true concept of community lies in the imagination of the members involved in it. Even though he never openly discussed virtual communities, essentially, all ‘imagined’ communities are ‘virtual’ in reality. The determinant factor shaping a community has never truly existed, but it exists in the form of the manifestation of the members’ identification as members of that community (Anderson, 1983:15). Once a common perception becomes the milestone used to determine the elements binding a community, then the community, consequentially, becomes a virtual entity. When brought into today’s concept, a place where information technology has developed rapidly, the elements shaping the image of a community are no longer the newspapers or magazines (Feenberg and Bakardjieva, 2004:38).
As part of the online virtual community, social network websites emerged with the aim to create a new communication space between individuals that had known each other before. A social network is defined by Boyd and Ellison as a website-based network that causes an individual to do the following actions: making a public profile or identity within the curb of a network system; choosing other users with whom then want to share information; see and ‘visit’ other people’s profiles in the same network system (Boyd&Ellison, 2007:211)
Those who want to join a social network websites have to make a profile containing basic information including pictures or hobbies that they want to share in public. These profiles would later serve as an identity for the individuals on a social network website. As a supplement, they have to add other contacts from the same social network website, whose function is as friends with whom they would interact. An account’s owner has to send friend requests to other accounts. If a request is approved, they would be connected on the website, or vice versa.
Among the popular social network websites is Facebook, with approximately 1 billion users around the world. The website was first established in 2004 as a virtual friendship website for the students of Harvard University (Cassidy, 2006). The next year, Facebook became publically accessible without requiring affiliation with any institution. Nonetheless, the ‘private network’ concept was maintained. For instance, those who wanted to access certain communities on Facebook had to firstly ask for the administrator’s permission.
Facebook’s main appeal is not only its ability to keep people connected, but also the additional features it possesses that cannot be found in its social network website precedents like Friendster. One of them is the application that makes it possible for users to list their interests. On an advanced level, it could even be developed into a fan page, to draw a user together with other people with similar interests. That was the forerunner of the development of fandom on Facebook.
Thus far, the term ‘fans’ have often been considered identical with audience, although both have different definitions. Fans are a group of audience whose role are not as a passive audience, that do not stop at ‘watching’ only, but also produce products of a new culture as a form of acceptance or reception of what they see (Bielby, Harrington & Bielby, 1999: 35). To put it simply, fans are those who are able to explain information in details about the object of their fandom and prove their fondness by quoting stanzas, lyrics, chapters, or parts of the fandom objects (Hills 2002: IX). Furthermore, the difference between fans and audience generally lies on the spending level for goods related to the fandom objects. A fan would gladly buy merchandise, whether it be a t-shirt, a hat, even a poster as a binding between them and the fandom objects.
Other than that, there are still many who see fans as audience, not only from the academic point of view, but also the mass media. Even the fans categorized as ‘normal’ by fellow fans would be considered as individuals obsessed with the fandom object by people outside of their circle (Jensen, 1992:9). Apart from the pros and cons, fans culture has created an alternative for the creation of a new identity for an individual (Grossberg 1992: 64). Using these new identities, they draw a border line between ‘us’ within the community and ‘them’ outside of the community.
Dangdut Fan Identification
Based on the categories of celebrity popularity created by Chris Rojek, dangdut singers and groups are in the categories of ‘achieved’ celebrity and ‘attributed’ celebrity . There are some dangdut singers who became popular because of their talents in playing music and composing songs, such as Rhoma Irama, Elvy Sukaesih, Camelia Malik, and Mansyur S. Other than those, there are also new celebrities in the world of dangdut who became popular because the media blew up news about them, for instance Inul Daratista, Dewi Perssik, or Julia Perez. Interestingly enough, almost all dangdut singers that have become fandom objects are solo singers pursuing their career in Jakarta, except for Rhoma Irama with OM.Soneta, the band that has been his company for tens of years. However, it turns out that the group is not more popular than Rhoma Irama. He is the one who becomes the fandom object of SFC or Soneta Fans Club. Thus, Seramania’s emergence that was followed by the establishment of a fandom for OM.Sera, a small dangdut group from a small town in East Java, is a very interesting topic to discuss.
OM.Sera fandom has never been officially declared in the offline space. Most Seramania only see each other when there is an OM.Sera performance in their own regions. The frequent meetings unintentionally caused the fans to know each other, but there hadn’t been any initiative to form a fandom . One of the obstacles preventing the existence of a fandom in the offline space is the limited time and the locations of this group’s performance. They only perform for 3 hours in every location before moving to another place on the next day. It is not easy for Seramania to approach OM.Sera’s singers or music players. Some had to follow their tour in East Java before eventually managed to be acquainted and shake hands with OM.Sera’s members, but there are many fans who could be satisfied by only buying their recording VCDs regularly or download their songs from the internet .
Initially, the way fans got to know OM.Sera was virtually the same. At first, they knew this group from the performance recording VCDs that circulate intensely on the market. OM.Sera indeed used this method to introduce themselves to people more than promotion on the radio and television. This method effectively attracted ordinary people’s interest. Many of them then downloaded this group’s songs and videos from the internet, and thereafter share those songs and videos with their friends . Due to the latter method, those who did not like dangdut at all became interested because almost every day, their friends ‘poisoned’ them, so to speak, by forcing them to listen to OM.Sera .
The modest number of songs they composed on their own that became a hit on the market did not reduce the fans’ fondness of OM.Sera. There are at least two major points that serve as the appeal of this group, according to the fans. The first one is their music variation, which is different from other similar groups of dangdut koplo music. Some fans admittedly state that this group’s beat of kendang and tabla is different from others to the point where they can recognize it without seeing the video recording . The beat of kendang ‘jap’ together with a touch of house music in several of the songs they had arranged became this group’s signature. Koplo Jap or Dangdut Tabla has also been acknowledged by this group as the main appeal of the songs they arranged . Furthermore, they are able to process all types of songs and change them into dangdut koplo songs, whether they be Indonesian, English, even Arabic songs.
The second appeal of this group is the members, including the singers and music players. Like many other dangdut groups, this group did not have a permanent singer. More than 12 female singers have once joined this group since its establishment to this day. From the ever-changing formation, currently there are 5 permanent singers, they are Wiwik Sagita, Via Vallen, Yuni Ayunda, Lara Silvi, and Ina Samantha . Many fans got interested in OM. Sera because of the line of the young and pretty singers who have decent voices and do not look tacky when dancing on stage .
Akin to what happened with its singers, at the beginning of its career, OM.Sera’s music players were never in a permanent formation as many of them were still affiliated with other groups. Only 5 years after the group’s establishment, in 2008 to be exact, did they have music players that last to this day. The formation of music players that has not changed in almost 4 years and the way they always look close, attractive, and enthusiastic on stage turns out to be an appeal for some fans. Many of them willingly go through hours of trips and wait until the end of the show just so they can take pictures with the music players. The way they play music is also considered impressive, inspiring one of the fans to form a dangdut koplo music group.
Before the digital era, the world of celebrity was impossible to reach for people outside the circle. Fans could only get in touch with their idols through the print and electronic media with a really small chance of direct interactions. Along with the technology development, a celebrity can directly build a base for the fans (Halperin, 2011). In this case, social network websites are among the facilities helping the creation of digital interaction between the fans and their idols. For new artists or celebrities rising to fame, social network websites serve as a means of promotion to increase their prestige and gain new fans. For those who are already famous and in the entertainment industry, social network websites are useful for maintaining a good relationship with their fans (Thomson, 2006; Duchesne, 2010).
One of OM.Sera’s fan pages on Facebook is Rised (Sera’s Republic of Indonesia) that joined the website on December 6, 2008. Until 2012, this account did not post many entries related to OM.Sera, even though they had used the name Rised. The next year, this account started posting many updates on news about OM.Sera, sharing download links of songs and videos, also uploading photographs of OM.Sera members. It subsequently became an appeal for other fans, leading them to joining in the account.
Regarding the interaction of fans-fandom objects, the online space provides a huge possibility for a more fluid interaction compared to that of the offline space. Fans will experience a self-actualization process and at the same time form new identities as individuals of the same world with that of their fandom objects. The self-identification patterns of OM. Sera’s fans based on the result of interviews, observations on the respondents’ personal accounts and the entries posted by the respondents on Rised’s account is illustrated in the following table .

From all respondents, only 1 of them, named Mahatma, can be considered a casual fan. He obtained OM.Sera’s songs from other people, without any attempt to look for them on his own. His background as a teacher pursuing his master’s degree in theology in a renowned university in Yogyakarta caused him to draw a firm border line between his self-identity with OM.Sera. His decision to become a Rised’s member on Facebook was not even made because of his personal willingness, but owing to a friend’s suggestion. Since joining Rised, he has not once posted an entry in Rised.
There are 3 loyal fans involved in the research, they are: Hendra—graduated from a graduate program of fine arts study; Danang—a Javanese Literature graduate; and Fajar—a Mechanical Engineering student. The like this group and make it part of their self-identification only to the people closest to them. They will periodically come and watch the group’s performance as long as they can go with their friends. The three of them joined Rised voluntarily and they did not only join one OM.Sera fandom account. However, they do not make OM.Sera their only fandom object.
Two types of fans mentioned above have a similar pattern, in the way that they still consider declaring themselves as part of OM.Sera shameful. Fajar admitted that he did not want to be seen watching OM.Sera’s performance by his family and friends from university. Even though he possessed a collection of tens of OM.Sera’s songs and videos, he refused to list OM.Sera as a music preference on his Facebook account. A similar reasoning was expressed by Mahatma, who stated that he only consumed OM.Sera’s dangdut music when he went to karaoke with his friends, as a part of activities he did to have fun. Apart from that, he would go back to his original music preference, which was jazz. As for Hendra and Danang, the feeling of shame is displayed by their decision to be passive on Rised’s account. Both of them were not ashamed of admitting that they OM.Sera’s fans on the offline space, but they did not show any similar indication in their online activities on Facebook. They did not want their friends to find out about their fandom activities on Facebook. This fact proves that for custom and loyal fans, there is still a firm border line between their self-identity and the identity of the fandom object. They do not want the two to merge.
The third type of fans is the most often found in this study. For die-hard fans, their self-identity has merged with the fandom object, marked with the insertion of the name of the fandom object into the names on their personal accounts. There were 5 respondents that inserted ‘Sera’ appendage into their names and only 2 respondents that did not insert any appendages . The purpose of this action was to display their admiration for the fandom object. Their activities on Rised’s account were relatively varied, starting from sharing photographs of OM.Sera’s singers or music players, uploading song and video recordings of the performances obtained from other websites, and sharing this group’s performance schedule. They came from different education backgrounds, under the age of 30. They considered objects related to the fandom object as precious cultural capital that would distinguish them from other fans. Therefore, they would race to be the first person to upload anything related to the fandom object.
The fourth fan typology is dysfunctional fans, which was only found in one respondent only, Lego Mengejar Badai. A normal man under the age of 30 working freelance for an EO and catering service, he considered OM.Sera as not only a fandom object but also a part of his self-identity. He tried as best as he could to be a part of this group’s history. One of his efforts was joining the security squad during this group’s performances, whose job was to help the security squad from the police protect the show area. Through this, he started a close relationship with OM.Sera’s members. Thus, even though he was an ordinary working man in the offline world, he managed to become an important figure in OM.Sera’s fandom.
From the classification above, it is apparent that each fan’s participation in Rised’s account as OM.Sera’s fandom varies considerably. The difference is also shown in their self-construction as a fan. In other words, the level of their participation in Rised’s account or enthusiasm in updating things related to OM.Sera on their personal account will influence the level of ‘worship’ for OM.Sera as a fandom object. The more often they update, the more fondness they feel for this group or vice versa.
Another interesting finding uncovered during this research is that the interaction patterns occurring in Rised’s account and entry postings regarding OM.Sera on respondents’ personal accounts are a form of transfer of the offline interaction during performances into online interaction. It can be seen in the use of ngoko Javanese language in order to affirm egalitarianism and that there isn’t certain hierarchy akin to what OM.Sera’s singers and MCs do on stage. Furthermore, appeared in several postings are greetings to other fans in the form of onomatopoeias of the sound of the beat of kendang. For them, the kendang is OM.Sera’s specialty, so they keep producing the sounds even though they are not watching any of OM.Sera’s shows or listening to any of OM.Sera’s songs.
The pattern of interaction found in Rised as the biggest OM.Sera fandom on Facebook is the unidirectional interaction pattern. It means that, the members of OM.Sera rarely make any interaction in this account. They more actively greet the fans through their personal accounts. Furthermore, not every members of Rised participate actively in the account. Only some of them actively post entries to this group. It can be seen in the table of entries posted by Rised’s members on Rised’s account from April through July 2012.

It is evident that from thousands of members, only several of them actively update news on Rised’s account. Surprisingly, respondents stated that they felt more comfortable with uploading entries related to OM.Sera on their own personal accounts. As a comparison, we can see it in the table below.

Another activity most frequently done is uploading OM.Sera’s video, both the ones obtained from YouTube and the ones they recorded on their own. The second activity is uploading photographs of OM.Sera’s members they obtained from numerous sources, among which are from internet browsing, the collection of photographs they had taken, or the collection of photographs from the personal accounts of OM.Sera’s members that they copied and pasted. The photographs uploaded are not always those of OM.Sera’s members on stage, but there are also many photographs showing OM.Sera’s members during ordinary daily events off the stage. Through these kinds of activity, fans feel closer to the fandom object, despite not taking into account whether or not the fandom object will pay attention to them.
Academics in the field of communication call these activities Parasocial Interaction. This concept refers to a process in which the audience is connected, perceiving themselves, and related to the figures that appear in the mass media (Horton & Wohl 1956). This relation is categorized into the asymmetrical interpersonal communication pattern as the audience can see their favorite figures in the media, but it does not work the other way around (Rubin & McHugh 1987; Shepherd, 2009: 156). The more often the fans see photographs, listen to songs, watch videos, and upload items about the fandom object, their sense of attachment would subsequently become stronger.

I have been translating since the year 2010, when I was a student of the English Department, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia. With a couple of lecturers as project managers, I've translated various types of documents (thesis, handbook, certificate, research paper, etc.) on various topics (social sciences, geography, medicine, law, etc.).
After my graduation on August 2011, I started working as a teacher at the English Department, Faculty of Cultural Sciences (teacher for subjects such as: General English: Speaking I & II, English for non-English-Department students; teacher's assistant for subjects such as: History of English Literature, World Literature) and at the faculty's Language Learning Center (teacher for subjects such as: English for Academic Purpose: Reading; TOEFL Preparation: Listening & Reading; Academic English Proficiency Test (AcEPT) Preparation: Composing Skills & Vocabulary). I also work as a part-time teacher at Sejong Korean Culture, Yogyakarta, teaching basic Korean for beginner learners.
However, I translate on the sides--as my department also takes translation jobs. I mainly work with Indonesia-English translation, but I frequently do English-Indonesian translation.
I go along well with deadlines, as I work better and more structurally when a deadline is set.
