Source text - English Norway is a land of ancient mountains, shaped and scraped during the ice ages, when some of the soil in which it is now so sadly deficient was carried as far away as Britain. The summits are much lower than in the Alps, but the whole country is virtually a single high plateau, seamed by deep valleys, whose bottoms, when drowned in sea-water, constitute the famous fiords. Nearly four-fifths of the whole lies above the 500-foot contour line; on an average, Norway lies nearly twice as high as the rest of Europe. It is also the fartherst outpost of Europe, and indeed of the civilized world, towards the north. One-third of the west coast is north of the Artic Circle, and although this, the tourist´s Land of the Midnight Sun, plays a relatively small part in the Norwegian economy, it is an important fact that even the southernmost point in Norway is well north of our own Highland Line, beyond which cultivation has always been found difficult and unrewarding. What soil there is in Norway is above average in fertility; but except at the edge of the fiord it is nearly always difficult of access, wooded, and bestrewn with huge boulders, which - in the days before bulldozers - had to be laboriously split by the application of fire and water and then manhandled to the edge of the clearing. It is not therefore suprising that the cultivated area is, even now, less than three per cent - about one-half of what is actually cultivable. Forests cover another quarter. The rest of Norway is a lofty wilderness, crossed by a few very expensive and skilfully engineered modern roads and railways and dotted with seters or mountain chalets to which from time immemorial the cattle have been brought up from neighbouring valleys to graze in shletered spots during the brief summer season.
Translation - Czech Norsko je krajinou starobylých hor, zformovaných a vytvarovaných během doby ledové, kdy byla část půdy, které je nyní tak zoufale nedostatek, odnesena dokonce až do Británie. Hřebeny hor se nacházejí mnohem níže než v Alpách, ale celá země je prakticky jednou náhorní plošinou, lemovanou hlubokými údolími, jejichž dna, zaplavená mořskou vodou, tvoří slavné fjordy. Téměř čtyři pětiny celé země leží výše než 500 stop nad mořem. V průměru Norsko leží skoro dvakrát výše než zbytek Evropy. Je také nejsevernějším místem Evropy a v podstatě civilizovaného světa. Jedna třetina západního pobřeží leží za polárním kruhem, a přestože tato turistická Země půlnočního slunce hraje poměrně malou roli v norské ekonomice, je důležité, že i ten nejjižnější bod Norska se nachází severněji než naše oblast Highland Line, za jejíž hranicí bylo obdělávání půdy vždy považováno za obtížné a nevděčné. Půda v Norsku je sice nadprůměrně úrodná, ale s výjimkou okrajů fjordů je téměř vždy těžko dostupná, zalesněná, pokryta obrovskými balvany, které – před nástupem buldozerů – musely být pracně roztříštěny pomocí ohně a vody a poté ručně dopraveny na okraj mýtiny. Není proto překvapivé, že obdělávaná půda i dnes činí jen okolo tří procent, tedy zhruba polovinu toho, co je ve skutečnosti obdělavatelné. Lesy zabírají další čtvrtinu země. Zbytek Norska je odlehlou pustinou, kterou křižuje několik velmi drahých a dovedně zkonstruovaných moderních silnic a železnic. Je protkaná salašemi (seters) nebo horskými chatami, do kterých od pradávna přiváděli dobytek ze sousedících údolí, aby se během krátkého léta pásl na chráněných místech.

If I didn't think about it, maybe the telephone might ring. Sometimes it does that. If I could think of something else. If I could think of something else. Knobby if I counted five hundred by fives, it might ring by that time. I'll count slowly. I won't cheat. And if it rings when I get to three hundred, I won't stop; I won't answer it until I get to five hundred. Five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, thirty, thirty-five, forty, forty-five, fifty.... Oh, please ring. Please.
This is the last time I'll look at the clock. I will not look at it again. It's ten minutes past seven. He said he would telephone at five o'clock. "I'll call you at five, darling." I think that's where he said "darling." I'm almost sure he said it there. I know he called me "darling" twice, and the other time was when he said good-by. "Good-by, darling." He was busy, and he can't say much in the office, but he called me "darling" twice. He couldn't have minded my calling him up. I know you shouldn't keep telephoning them--I know they don't like that. When you do that they know you are thinking about them and wanting them, and that makes them hate you. But I hadn't talked to him in three days-not in three days. And all I did was ask him how he was; it was just the way anybody might have called him up. He couldn't have minded that. He couldn't have thought I was bothering him. "No, of course you're not," he said. And he said he'd telephone me. He didn't have to say that. I didn't ask him to, truly I didn't. I'm sure I didn't. I don't think he would say he'd telephone me, and then just never do it. Please don't let him do that, God. Please don't.

Translation - Czech Prosím tě, Bože, dej, aby mi teď hned zavolal. Dobrý Bože, dej, ať mi teď hned zavolá. Nic víc po tobě nebudu chtít, opravdu ne. Tolik toho přece nechci. Pro tebe by to byla úplná maličkost, Bože, úplně malinká maličkost. Jen zařiď, aby teď hned zavolal. Prosím, Bože. Moc, moc, moc prosím.
Možná kdybych na to nemyslela, telefon by zazvonil. To občas dělává. Kdybych tak mohla přemýšlet nad něčím jiným. Kdybych mohla přemýšlet nad něčím jiným. Možná kdybych po pěti napočítala do pětiset, tak mezitím zazvoní. Budu počítat pomalu. Nebudu podvádět. A když zazvoní, až napočítám tři sta, nepřestanu počítat; nezvednu ho, dokud nedojdu k pěti stům. Pět, deset, patnáct, dvacet, dvacet pět, třicet, třicet pět, čtyřicet, čtyřicet pět, padesát… Ach jo, tak zazvoň. Prosím.
Tohle je naposledy, co se podívám na hodiny. Už se na ně znova nepodívám. Je sedm deset. Řekl, že mi zavolá v pět. „Zavolám ti v pět, miláčku.“ Myslím, že právě tady řekl „miláčku“. Vím skoro určitě, že to řekl právě tady . Vím, že mi řekl „miláčku“ dvakrát, tady a pak, když se loučil. „Nashle, miláčku.“ Měl plno práce a v kanceláři nemůže moc mluvit, ale dvakrát mi řekl „miláčku“. Nemohlo mu vadit, že jsem mu zavolala. Vím, že by se jim nemělo pořád volat – vím, že to nemají rádi. Když jim voláte , tak vědí, že na ně myslíte a že je chcete a začnete je tím štvát . Ale já jsem s ním nemluvila tři dny – už tři dny. A jenom jsem se ho zeptala, jak se má; stejně tak by mu mohl zavolat kdokoliv. Nemohlo mu to vadit. Nemohlo mu připadat, že ho otravuju. „Ne, samozřejmě že ne,“ řekl. A pak taky, že mi zavolá. Nemusel to říkat. Já jsem to po něm nechtěla, opravdu ne. Vím určitě, že ne. Přece by neřekl, že mi zavolá, a pak to nikdy neudělal. Prosím, Bože, nedovol, aby to tak dopadlo. Prosím, to ne.
„Zavolám ti v pět, miláčku.“ „Nashle, miláčku.“ Měl spoustu práce a měl na spěch a všude okolo něj byli lidi, ale dvakrát mi řekl „miláčku“. To patří jen mně, jen mně. To mi zůstane, i kdybych ho už nikdy neviděla. Jenže to je tak málo!. To mi nestačí. Nic nestačí, jestli ho už nikdy neuvidím. Prosím, Bože, dej, ať se s ním ještě někdy uvidím Prosím, já ho tak moc chci. Tak moc ho chci. Budu se chovat dobře, Bože. Polepším se, vážně, když mi dovolíš ho znovu vidět. Když dovolíš, aby mi zavolal. Tak dej, aby mi teď hned zavolal.
