CONTENT (for ALL audiovisual and audio-only read alouds)
Reader introduced him/herself
Reader begins by saying the title, author and illustrator of the book
Reader’s pronunciation is clear
Story is read with expression and an engaging tone
Story is read at an appropriate pace (not too quickly)
2-3 questions are asked during reading (either a prediction question or about an illustration) with a 2-3 second pause before transitioning smoothly back to reading
1-2 questions asked at the end are open-ended
Reader ends with thanking the child viewer like, “Thank you for reading with me”
There is no unwanted background noise
Recording is 5-10 minutes long
For audio-only:
The story makes sense and flows smoothly even without the pictures (reader adapts the story as needed to orally share information that is depicted in pictures)
The read aloud incorporates appropriate sound effects without distracting from the story (Ex: door-knocking)
Asking questions during reading may be disruptive to an audio-only short story, so this can be omitted according to your judgement.
FORM (additional criteria for VIDEOS in which both reader and hard-copy book are visible)
Appropriate lighting: should not be too dark and should avoid shadows and glare (lighting source should be behind recording device and facing the reader)
Background: plain (non-white) or bookshshelf
Appropriate framing: reader and book should fill the frame as modeled in sample frame within Read Aloud tips document (reader’s head should take up a quarter to a third of the screen and book should take up the rest)
Reader looks into the camera while reading (hopefully, smiling!)
Reader begins by showing only the book cover (while stating title, author and illustrator)
Book is held so that pictures are facing the camera throughout the reading
Reader shows all pictures, moving the book forward to fill camera frame with the two-page spread
