Seed dormancy is an important developmental checkpoint, allowing plants to regulate when and where they grow. The germination of dormant seeds is promoted by environmental signals that allow plants to restrict timing of their establishment to certain seasons, rainfall or to the removal of the vegetation cover. Dormancy is also important for the spatial control of seedling establishment, as germination generally terminates dispersal: one example is that a seed that requires light for germination is too far below the soil surface. Seed dormancy is therefore one of the most important adaptive traits in plants.

Соcтояние покоя семян является важным эволюционно обусловленным ограничительным механизмом, позволяющим регулировать время и место роста растений. Находящиеся в состоянии покоя семена прорастают в результате определенных сигналов со стороны окружающей среды, что ограничивает вегетацию растений во времени. Примером может служить прорастание семян в дождливый период или во время освобождения места от растений-конкурентов.
Период покоя также является важным фактором, контролирующим наличие пространства для развития сеянца и проявляющемся в неодновременном прорастании семян. Например, чувcтвительные к свету семена не смогут прорасти, если они находятся слишком глубоко от поверхности почвы. Состояние покоя семян, таким образом, является одним из важнейших адаптивных признаков растений.

В доступной и интересной форме излагаются научные факты о причинах различного поведения (плодоношения) урожайных и морозостойких сортов в местах выращивания с различным климатом и причинах их нерегулярного плодоношения в местности с казалось бы подходящим климатом. На основе проведенной экспериментальной и аналитической работы выяснены причины этого явления, а также разработана методика для устранения нерегулярности плодоношения и составления прогноза комфортных условий прохождения периода онтогенеза за счет использования взаимодействия генотип-среда.

You will learn in an interesting and intelligible way scientific facts about reasons of different fruit-bearing behaviour of productive and frost-hardy varieties in various growing sites as well as the reasons for their irregular fruit- bearing in areas that should seem to have an appropriate climate. We have found out the reasons of this phenomenon on the basis of the results of experimental and analytic work and have developed the methods of elimination of irregularity of fruit-bearing and forecasting of appropriate conditions of period of vegetation (ontogeny) using the genotype-environment interaction.
