Het spannen van de aandrijfriemen geschiedt door middel van een hydraulische cilinder die ervoor zorgt dat de afstand tussen de assen wordt vergroot. Het hydraulische systeem is gevuld met vet en heeft aan de buitenzijde van de filterinstallatie een aansluiting voor het vullen, een mogelijkheid om het systeem middels een kogelkraan te legen en een manometer voor het aflezen van de druk. Aan het hydraulisch systeem is een accumulator gekoppeld. De accumulator zorgt ervoor dat het systeem op druk blijft, ook bij het spannen van de band.
De accumulator is gevuld met stikstof en heeft een vooraf ingestelde druk. De druk verschilt per systeem maar ligt boven de 40 bar. Mocht de druk onder de 40 bar zakken dan is het systeem zover leeg dat de accumulator zijn werk niet meer kan doen. Is dit het geval dan dient u het systeem bij te vullen, gebruik hiervoor universeel smeervet zonder toevoegingen. Dit drukverlies wordt ook gesignaleerd door een druksensor. Deze druksensor geeft een signaal door aan de schakelkast als de druk in het systeem te laag is. Op de schakelkast gaat dan een waarschuwingslamp branden.

Als een P2 stoffilter met een efficiency van 94 % wordt gebruikt, zal áchter het filter slechts 6% van de oorspronkelijke concentratie stof worden aangetroffen. De inwaartse lekkage wordt echter niet alleen bepaald door de kwaliteit van het filter, maar onder andere ook door de afdichting op het gelaat. Dus presteert het masker in de praktijk slechter. Daarom wordt in de norm steeds een ‘toegestane inwaartse lekkage’ gespecificeerd, die uiteindelijk de Nominale protectiefactor geeft. De nominale protectiefactor (NPF) is de verhouding tussen de concentratie stof buiten het masker en die erin. De factor wordt berekend met de formule 100 gedeeld door de toegestane inwaartse lekkage. De 'nominale protectiefactor' is dus eigenlijk een denkbeeldige prestatie die alleen in een laboratorium gehaald wordt.
Toegekende protectiefactor
Een P2-snuitje zoals in het voorbeeld toont in de tabellen een toegekende protectiefactor (TPF) van 10, hetgeen slechts de helft is van de theoretische nominale protectiefactor. Het is duidelijk waar dat door komt: de praktijk! Extra lekkages door onvoorzichtigheid, baardgroei, andere gelaatsvormen etc. De stofstrepen langs de neus van de timmerman. De aansluiting op het gelaat is een zwak punt, en er wordt dankzij die lekkage ongefilterde omgevingslucht bijgemengd, waar in de toegekende protectiefactor rekening mee is gehouden. Een disposable masker presteert minder goed dan een siliconenrubberen halfgelaatsmasker met hetzelfde type filter, en het halfgelaatsmasker wordt weer ruim voorbijgestreefd door het volgelaatsmasker, dat immers een dubbele afdichting heeft en het lastige gebied rond de neus niet hoeft af te dichten. De toegekende protectiefactor van een afhankelijk adembeschermingsmiddel variëert tussen 4 (FFP1 wegwerpsnuitje) en 40 (bijvoorbeeld een P3 filter op een volgelaatsmasker). Hoe effectiever het filter, hoe meer roet een beetje lekkage relatief in het eten gooit. Zelfs een aangeblazen P3 filter dat een NPF heeft van 2000, haalt op een passend volgelaatsmasker toch niet méér dan een TPF van 40! Bovendien: de TPF is volgens de norm (EN 529:2005) nog altijd maar een waarde die bij 95% van de beroepsbevolking verwacht kan worden, bij adequaat getrainde personen onder toezicht, die een goed functionerend en correct geplaatst adembeschermend middel gebruiken. Het kan in de praktijk dus nog een tikje erger zijn...
Werkplekprotectiefactor
Uitgangspunt is een masker dat geschikt is voor de werksituatie en dat goed past op het gezicht van de drager, het juiste type filter en een goede gebruiksinstructie. Als in de werksituatie een meting wordt uitgevoerd van de concentratie in en die buiten het masker, dan is daaruit de werkplekprotectiefactor (WPF) te berekenen. Deze waarde komt het dichtst bij wat we werkelijk willen weten: is de werknemer afdoende beschermd?

Assigned protection factor

A disposable mask delivers a lower performance than a silicone rubber half mask with the same type of filter, and the half mask is in turn surpassed by the full face mask, which has a double seal and does not need to seal the awkward area around the nose. The assigned protection factor of a dependent respirator varies from 4 (FFP1 disposable respirators) to 40 (for example a P3 filter on a full face mask). The more effective the filter, the less harmful a little leakage is. Even a blower-assisted P3 filter with an NPF of 2000 achieves no more than an APF of 40 when used with a suitable full face mask! Furthermore, the APF is, according to the standard (EN 529:2005), still only a value that just 95% of the work force can expect to attain, where the persons are adequately trained and operating under supervision, as well as using a properly functioning and correctly fitted respirator. In reality, the protection factor can therefore be slightly lower...
Workplace protection factor
The starting principle is a mask that is suitable for use in a workplace situation, which can be worn comfortably on the face of the user, the right type of filter and effective user training. A test of the concentration both inside and outside of the mask in the workplace can be used to determine the workplace protection factor (WPF). This value comes closest to what we actually want to know: is the employee adequately protected?
