Describing a History of Economics course.
I've found some entrances in the Kudoz glossary but am bewildered as to the correct choice. In case anyone's interested, this is actually already a translation from the original in Catalan that said *grans pols*
El estudiante, al acabar la asignatura, habrá comprendido los factores de crecimiento económico en el largo plazo, igualmente deberá detectado los *grandes polos* de la economía mundial y analizado la evolución de alguno de ellos. También habrá reflexionado sobre el proceso de globalización de la economía en los dos últimos siglos.

Some alternative suggestions. Mroz de Leon's explanation of "grandes polos" is correct; it refers to major events, happenings, factors, places (although not necessarily) that shape or have influenced the evolution of the world economy

I find that 'hub' works well for "polo' in a context like this. It conveys the coming together of many forces implied in 'polo'.
