French term

Servante établi mobile

French to English Other Automotive / Cars & Trucks Training programme
Hello,

I am unable to translate this term "Servante établi mobile".
It is an equipment which can be used for the training programme of an automotive mechanic.

@Chris A dictionary gives all the possible meanings in all contexts, my understanding of the question is "automotive mechanic", so I described what an automotive mechanic calls a "servante".

In woodworking context we could see this:

or that:
http://cgi.ebay.fr/Servante-extensible-a-9-rouleaux-charge-l...

and in a household or hotel context, well....

French has much fewer words than English, context can give the additional information, try to make a QA system happy when translating "assis sur mon bureau dans mon bureau"

A trolley? I'm not a specialist here, but the definition given by Chris points to something like a trolley-mounted workbench. The "servante" as defined in Chris's entry also appears to act as a "rest" for long parts.

For "servante d'établi", GDT gives "Support mobile, fournissant un point d'appui à la partie en porte à faux de pièces longues travaillées à l'établi ou à la machine", and suggests "bench vice". On the other hand, GDT gives for "servante d'atélier": "Meuble d'atelier qui est monté sur des roulettes de manutention et qui est constitué d'un plan de travail ainsi que de plateaux et de tiroirs destinés au rangement des outils". So, is it a tool chest, or is it a vice? Don't you just love how many option you get in French?

movable (bench) vice

As well as the obvious meaning, a "servante" is a bench vice. "Etabli" seems to imply that it is fixed to the bench, in which case the "mobile" may mean that it pivots (as some do) about any one of a number of axes (usually vertical). On the other hand, it could be referring to an engineer's vice of the type used on pillar drills: these have slots for clamping bolts and can be moved around on the platen.

tool chest, tool cabinet

See below what French manufacturer Facom sells under the name "servante",
http://www.facom.com/fr-fr/p-127-Servante-Jet-XXL.html
The Jet XXL could be closer to an "établi" as Chris Collister mentioned: rather a bench with the optional wooden top

The most common model among mechanics is a mobile tool chest with a lock in which every mechanics keeps his tools
http://www.facom.com/facom/Servantes/index.html

So the standard model of "servante" is a tool chest on wheels, with the height of a bench, and some models may receive a wooden top, the vice being in my opinion rather reserved to the "non-mobile" models larger and fixed (Jet XXL above, less common because much more expensive than regular benches or tool cabinets)
