Discussion

Charles Davis Jul 30, 2014:
@ Donal I am not going to pretend to be a Cham speaker, but that does seem to be what they say. The page I cited also has "Seam mi?" in Western Cham (not Eastern; from what I've read, they're pretty different and not mutually intelligible), but that means "How are you?".
DLyons Jul 30, 2014:
@Charles I certainly have nothing better to offer. Maybe in Seattle - I'll keep an eye on the News :-)
Charles Davis Jul 30, 2014:
@ Donal Not in some states, perhaps, but Seattle is famously a liberal city, indeed notably left-wing by US standards, and I really don't think there'd be any problem there.

DLyons Jul 30, 2014:
Salaam (aleikum) is a general greeting used across the Muslim world and its meaning "Peace (be with you)" would be very appropriate. But I can't see an Arab word being accepted in the USA (especially when the President has been accused of being a Muslim). Sad, but I think true.

This is a useful site:

"Salam,
My name is Isvan, a Cham in Vietnam."

As you can see in the first reference, there's a Muslim greeting used particularly in Western Cham, "Salamu alaikum" (variant spellings are found).
