English英语 term

schools of instruction

While First State did not choose EMC unified storage, Pittsburgh Technical Institute (PTI) did. PTI is a private career college with two locations in Western Pennsylvania. It provides associate degree and certificate programs to more than 2,000 students through seven ***schools of instruction***
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Ambrose Li

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

This is what we teach:
Ambrose Li Mar 15, 2011:
jarv95888 Mar 15, 2011:
Sorry if I raise any debate or arguments here. I'm just suggesting a better solution to Clearwater. Maybe, 教学系统 is not as good as Ms. Li suggest. The truth is that those are just curricula, not really instituted academic departments. They are just the courses provided by PTI.

Ambrose Li Mar 14, 2011:

在专上学院,有时“学系”会叫做“school”, 例如 school of medicine, school of optometry.

It's the same with "campus."
As for "schools of instruction," I think we can generalize it in Chinese as 教学系统. If the 系统 is big enough, then we can have it as 部门, 系所, or even 学院 like an ordinary college or university.

不建议用”分校“, 一般大学的分校是以学院为划分,四个学院(college of law, college of business, college of medicine, etc.)
Note from asker:
Peer comment(s):

neutral Ambrose Li : Yes, 校园 is a much better translation. I don’t think these private career colleges will ever become universities; they are using the word “school” probably just to make their school feel big.

Peer comment(s):

agree Lau Wei Tsinn : 学院 is more generic as compared with 学系, which fits in better with the English source. As for the reply on 2 campuses, I would agree with Ambrose on the use of 两处校园
