English term

graphics pre-press

English to Japanese Bus/Financial Printing & Publishing
This is one of the categories in an organizational chart, listing the work that is performed by a mailing & distribution company (Note: this company produces, prints, and distributes printed booklets and manuals, etc., but is NOT a publisher).

Context: printing & bindery operations, printing small-press, web operations, bindery, graphics pre-press, estimating.

Also, what does "pre-press" mean exactly?

(印刷用画像処理

If this were text, it would be "typesetting (組版)," but the basic idea is to make the materials ready for use by a printing company.

In most cases this means "DTP editing," (of graphics in this case). For this company, the reference is undoubtedly to the use of applications like the freeware Gimp, Adobe's Photoshop or Illustrator, or Macromedia's Freehand to create or edit graphics for use in electronic or paper publications.

Note that the URL below gives "pre-press" as katakana, and I know from experience that many persons in the printing industry here in Japan would understand プリプレス just fine. If you'd like to use the katakana, it would probably be best to say something like, "プリプレス画像処理".
