charged quality/raised level of energy Erklärung: "Herzenergie" and "Kreisbogen" as focus and basic element of a picture--this would indicate a rather esoteric mindset. Having said that, "Spannung" seems to be rather straightforward: "tension" ("suspense")--a charged quality. Or "heightened/raised level of energy". |

charge / energy Erklärung: That sounds 1:1 technical, but I'm taking it in the esoterically-minded vein that Lonnie and Helen are also picking up* - along with your own idea of 'reach' - the energy or charge contained within or defining a certain radius (or as the artist says, an arc). As if she sets a 'heart' of energy on her picture surface to radiate 'in step' (in 2d-space; maybe in time - pulsing - as well, but at least in the passage you quote, that's not explicit) with her own heart. I've never seen Spannung used for Spanne literally ('reach'/'span' from a so slightly shifted perspective). I'd imagine she's playing with the forces (both esoteric and plain visual-associative) of assertion/painterly statement on a surface of potential infinity vs the given boundary of her support plus the tuned-into one of her sense of her own energy - but that really would need dialogue with her (and a look at the pics) if it's not to be pure speculation. |

span Erklärung: I read this as being about a metaphorical/spiritual/energetic space between the artist and the 'canvas' which is connected by an arc or span of the same extent as is encompassed by her conception of the energy 'body' of her heart. I would read this as an esoteric reference to the space we are supposed to take up beyond our bodies - our aura - or the energy which is believed to emanate from a central point within a chakra point near or in the body outwards in a circle, or as here, an arc or span. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 day53 mins (2009-04-08 21:42:43 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- Thanks, mill. Yes, a really tough one. I do think Stephen Reader has correctly read the sentence, though - or at least one of us has! -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 day59 mins (2009-04-08 21:48:21 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- It is a bit late in the day, but having re-read the sentence in the light of what Stephen says, I wonder if 'compass' might be a good translation. |
