I'm afraid my knowledge of Italian war history prior to the 20th century isnt up to much and I would like to know what R.I stands for here ... I could guess but would rather be sure!! I would be especially grateful if there is anyone out there who is familiar with this monument and could also explain what the writer means by a 'monumento chiodato' here. here is the sentence: "Un ‘monumento chiodato’ fu eretto il 20 luglio 1916 a Trieste per l’anniversario di Lissa, dedicato alle vittime della R.I. Marina." If it is any help, the writer talks about the symbolism of iron nails in the previous paragraph ... Thanks.
