- I was going to say I don't think we say seven-eighths length and suggest three-quarter length, but it seems we do - is this a fur coat, by any chance?

By the way, I think it means a couple of inches or so above the knee in length, like the Mink Barn pic. shows and the NYT link says - ''The seven-eighths length, just above the knee, is by far the biggest-selling fashion we've had in five years,'' Mr. Schulman said. - i.e. 7/8ths of the full length, which is to the knee.

agree Ambra Giuliani : According to Da Vinci the distance between the top of the head and the bottom of the chin is 1/8 of a man's height. So a 7/8 coat should hit just around the calf. "Calf length" is more common than "seven eighths", at least here.
