French degrees and diplomas explained
When investing in higher education it is important to know what level of education you start with, and what kind of qualifications you will gain. Please find below some information about the French higher education system, along with their equivalents to provide further understanding.
1. In France, most students leave school with a Baccalaureate. This is the equivalent of A-Levels, and enables students to apply to university.
2. DUT (BAC+2)
As students progress through the French higher education system, their level will be referred to as "BAC +..." For example, the level of a student who has successfully completed two years of university study is acknowledged as "BAC+2".
The first two years of successful study at an IUT enable students to obtain a "DUT" (Diplôme Universitaire de Technologie, a which is the equivalent of a Higher National Diploma in Technology)
3. ***"Licence" = Bachelor's Degree***
French universities take part in the European Credit Transfer System. One year of successful study in France is worth 60 ECTS. ***A "Licence" the equivalent of a Bachelor's degree***, requires 180 ECTS i.e. 3 years of successful study after the Baccalaureate.
"Licences" at an IUT are known as "Licences Professionnelles" or "Licences Pro" which are nationally recognized Bachelor's degree programmes accepted by any employer.
Furthermore, IUT d'Allier offers 2 three-year university diplomas known in France as Diplômes d'Université (DU). These courses (DUMACI and DUETI), also equivalent to a Bachelor's degree, specialise in certain fields and are specific to IUT d'Allier.

Educazione post-secondaria:
Studi universitari:
vi accedono gli studenti che sono in possesso del diploma di completamento dell’istruzione secondaria generale. L’accesso è condizionato dal voto del diploma e dal numero massimo di iscritti stabilito dal Consiglio dell’Educazione Superiore.
Nel percorso universitario si possono individuare più 4 livelli di studio:
1. i corsi di laurea che possono durare 4 anni per scienze umanistiche, economia, legge, educazione, arte, educazione fisica, legge islamica e scienze infermieristiche; oppure 5 anni nel caso di architettura, farmacia, odontoiatria, medicina veterinaria, ingegneria civile, ingegneria meccanica e elettronica, agraria, ingegneria chimica e petrolifera; oppure 6 anni per medicina. Una volta conclusi lo studente consegue il ***titolo di bacelliere (bachelor’s degree)***;
2. i corsi di specializzazione possono durare 1 anno, rilasciando un diploma di qualifica o specializzazione, e sono frequentati da studenti che hanno ottenuto il grado di bacelliere; nel caso in cui richiedano un impegno di due anni di studio, al termine rilasciano un diploma (post-graduate diploma);
3. il grado di Master (Master’s degree) si consegue studiando per un altro anno, dopo i corsi di specializzazione della durata di due anni;
4. il titolo di dottore (doctoral level) viene rilasciato proseguendo gli studi per altri due anni, dopo il grado di Master.
