Dear colleagues,

I am very upset now, since I lost the whole translation of a large project I am working on now. I just wanted to change project settings to adjust pretranslation functions, I did it according the NXT manual and than, as the NXT manual says I need to reimport the source files to make changes work, I did the reimport.

And now all the translations are lost!!! There is no pretranslation and when I make a concordance search or TMX export, I can not see any translations I made before. Do I really have to translate all this stuff again? ;-((((

I know that is my fault, but I am rather a Trados user and I am used to know that all translations are stored in the TM - whatever happens with the source text.
Is there any chance to restore my work? My deadline is on Monday and it will be impossible to meet it, if I have to translate this again.

I would really appreciate any help! Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,
Olga

Restoring old versions Apr 27, 2012

If you know the name(s) of the file(s) you could try the following:
Find the respective file in Windows Explorer and right-click it. Then click Properties and go to the Previous Versions tab.

This functionality is not available with Windows XP, though. And DO NOT replace any file without creating a backup first.

Did you make a backup of the language pairs? Apr 27, 2012

Transit stores translations in "language pairs". These are two files with the name of the source file, and two different extensions according to your languages (e.g. FRA and .ENG for French and English).

When you re-import your text, the system issues a warning message, saying you will overwrite your translation.

However, if you made a backup of those language pairs, you can simply copy them to the working directory of the project and include them as reference material

If you did not make a backup, however, then your translation is lost... (Note that there are many backup solutions, some costing as little as €50/year which automatically and continuously back up all the files in the directory(ies) you specify.)

Hope this helps!

SAVE and/or LOCK files Apr 27, 2012

If there are any files with SAVE and/or LOCK extensions ("after the dot in hte filename") in the respective folders, you might still have some chance. But it depends on many circumstances. If there are any such files, first of all you should copy them to a safe location, and then you can try to rename their extensions to those of the "translated" files.

These language pairs are now overwritten because of re-import.

When you re-import your text, the system issues a warning message, saying you will overwrite your translation.

There was no warning message, otherwise I would have stopped the re-importing. I just followed the steps as said in the NXT manual and didn't think it would lead to such a disaster.

I do a daily backup automatically, but most of my translation I did yesterday after the backup, really stupid. ;-(
OK, I think this time I learned my lesson. I started the same translation with Trados now, it is safer for me.

Thank you anyway!

Russisch.RUS.LCK
STRCT4DEU.MTX

Restoring language pair in Transit NXT Apr 27, 2012

Hi Olga,
try the following:
1. make a copy of Russisch.RUS which is the newly created language pair (target)
2. change the name of "Russisch.RUS.BAK" to "Russisch.RUS" this should be the backup file

Not sure it works, but it might be worth a try.
