Wir blicken in die Technik des derzeit leistungsstärksten Vierzylinder-Seriendiesels.
Diesel-Revolution
Exakt 100 Kilowatt oder 136 PS Leistung aus zwei Litern Hubraum. Vor nicht allzu langer Zeit war das ein Spitzenwert für einen Ottomotor. Heute wird diese enorme Literleistung von 50 kW oder 68 PS von einem Diesel erreicht: Der neue Vierzylinder-Turbodiesel im E46 setzt den Maßstab in der Dieselwelt. Noch nie hat ein serienmäßiger Selbstzünder aus so wenig Hubraum so viel Leistung und Drehmoment entwickelt.
Der Motor mit der Typenbe-zeichnung M47D20 VP44 ist eine komplette Neukonstruktion und verfügt über alle Merkmale, die einen modernen Diesel aus-zeichnen. Das beginnt im Leichtmetall-Zylinderkopf: Vier Ventile pro Zylinder, die über reibungsarme Rollenschlepphebel gesteuert werden, sorgen für einen optimalen Gaswechsel. Dabei wurden die beiden Einlaß-kanäle für unterschiedliche Funktionen ausgelegt: Ein Kanal ist als sogenannter Tangentialkanal seitlich angeordnet. Er sorgt vor allem für eine gute Füllung des Zylindervolumens. Der zweite Kanal führt senkrecht von oben in den Brennraum. Er sorgt als Drallkanal für eine optimale Ver-wirbelung von Luft und Kraftstoffpartikeln.

Der M47 hat eine höhere spezifische Leistung als jeder andere Seriendiesel.

Die vier Ventile machen auch eine zentrale Anordnung der Einspritzdüse möglich, was viele Vorteile in bezug auf die Verbrennung und die Abgasemissionen hat. Damit konnte ein vollkommen symmetrischer Brennraum entstehen - eine ideale Voraussetzung für hohe Leistung bei minimalem Verbrauch und geringen Emissionen.
Als erster BMW Diesel besitzt der M47 eine Direkteinspritzung, die für einen optimalen Wirkungsgrad des Motors bürgt. Das Herz der DI-Technik ist die neue Hochdruck-Verteiler-Einspritzpumpe VP 44 von Bosch. Sie produziert Einspritzdrücke von bis etwa 1000 bar. Die elektronische Regelung der Einspritzung durch die Digitale Dieselelektronik DDE 3.0 macht eine weitere Optimierung des Einspritzvorgangs möglich: Ein Zweifeder-Düsenhalter (Einspritzdüsen) sorgt für eine weichere Verbrennung.
Verantwortlich für die hohe Leistung und den steilen Verlauf der Drehmomentkurve ist auch die Technik des Turboladers: Der VNT-Lader (Variable Nozzle Turbine) besitzt eine variable Geometrie der Turbinenschaufeln. Die verstellbaren Leitschaufeln sorgen bei niedrigen Drehzahlen und Motorlasten für eine Verringerung des Strömungsquerschnitts und damit eine Erhöhung der Anströmgeschwindigkeit. Das Ergebnis: Schon im unteren Drehzahlbereich stellt der Turbolader spontan einen hohen Druck bereit, der dem Motor „Flügel" verleiht. Bereits bei 1750 U/min erreicht der M47 sein Drehmomentmaximum von 280 Newtonmetern.
Die Elektronik steuert Kraftstoff-menge und Ein-spritzzeitpunkt: Über die Digitale Diesel Elektronik sind die wesent-lichen Komponen-ten der Einpritz-anlage zu einem System vernetzt.
Das Herz des Ein-spritzsystems ist die neue Verteiler-einspritzpumpe VP 44, die bis zu 1000 bar Druck aufbaut.
Das Ansprechverhalten des M47-Motors ist vorbildlich. Außerdem wird durch die VNT-Technik ein Wastegate-Ventil überflüssig.
Die geringen Rohemissionen des Triebwerks werden durch einen nachgeschalteten Oxidationskatalysator (Vor- und Hauptkatalysator) und eine elektronisch geregelte Abgasrückführung mit Heißfilmluftmassenmesser weiter gesenkt. Zusätzlich wird beim M47 erstmals eine Abgaskühlung eingesetzt: Der AGR-Kühler ist in der Abgasrückführung zwischen Auspuffkrümmer und AGR-Ventil eingebaut. Das Abgas durchströmt darin ein Rohrbündel, das wiederum vom Motorkühlmittel durch-strömt wird. Durch diese Kühlung lassen sich die NOx-Emissionen um bis zu 15 Prozent und die Partikelemis-sionen um bis zu acht Prozent reduzieren.
Auf minimalem Niveau sind auch die Betriebskosten für den BMW Fahrer: Der neue 320d mit M47-Motor verbraucht im EU-Mix nur 5,7 Liter-und das bei enormen Fahrleistungen (0-100 km/h in 9,9 Sekunden, Höchstgeschwindigkeit 207 km/h). Gleichzeitig ist der Wartungsaufwand sehr gering: Durchschnittlich nur alle 22500 Kilometer ist ein Service fällig.
Der Trick mit den Schaufeln: Die Leitschaufeln auf der Turbinenseite des Turboladers werden automa-tisch verstellt, was das Ansprechverhal-ten und den Druckaufbau enorm verbessert.

It combines all the high tech features of the modern diesel engine: four-valve technology, direct injection, a variable-geometry turbocharger. We take a look at the technology of the current most powerful four cylinder series-produced diesel engine.
Diesel Revolution
Exactly 100 kilowatts or 136 PS output from a two litre engine. Not too long ago this was the peak for a petrol engine. Today the enormous engine output per litre of 50 kW or 68 PS is achieved by a diesel: The new turbo four-cylinder diesel engine in the E46 sets the standard in the diesel world. Never before has a standard diesel car developed so much power and torque from such a small engine capacity.
The engine with the classification M47D20 VP44 is a completely new construction and is equipped with all the features that a modern diesel has. It begins in the light metal cylinder heads: four valves per cylinder, which are controlled by low-friction roller cam followers, ensure optimal gas exchange. Also the two inlet channels were designed for different functions: one channel is arranged as a so called tangential channel at the side. Above all it ensures that the volume of the cylinder is well filled. The second channel leads down from above into the combustion chamber. It provides a spiral channel for an optimal turbulence of air and fuel particles.

The four valves also make the central arrangement of the injection nozzle possible, which has many advantages in terms of combustion and exhaust gas emissions. For this reason an entirely symmetrical combustion chamber can be formed - an ideal basis for high performance with minimal fuel consumption and low emissions.
As the first diesel BMW the M47 has a direct injection, which guarantees the optimal efficiency of the engine. The heart of the DI technology is the new high-pressure distributor injection pump VP 44 from Bosch. It produces injection pressures of about 1000 bar. The electronic controlling of the injection through the Digital Diesel Electronics system DDE 3.0 makes it possible to further optimise the injection process: a two-spring nozzle holder (injection nozzles) ensures a smoother combustion.
The turbocharger technology is also responsible for the high performance and the steep slope of the torque curve: the VNT supercharger (Variable Nozzle Turbine) has a variable turbine blade geometry. The adjustable guide blades ensure a reduction of the flow cross-section and therefore an increase of blade-tip velocity at low engine speeds and loads. The result: even in the lower speed range the turbocharger spontaneously provides a high pressure which gives the engine "wings". At as little as 1750 rpm the M47 reaches its maximum torque of 280 newton metres.
The electronics control the amount of fuel and injection timing: the essential components of the injection system are connected to a system through the Digital Diesel Electronics.
The heart of the injection system is the new distributor injection pump VP 44, which builds up to a pressure of 1000 bars.
The responding qualities of the M47 engine are commendable. In addition a wastegate valve becomes redundant due to VNT technology.
The low engine out emissions are further reduced through a downstream oxidation catalyst (pre and main catalyst) and an electronically controlled exhaust gas recirculation with a hot-film air-mass meter. Furthermore exhaust gas cooling is used for the first time in the M47: the EGR cooler is installed in the exhaust gas recirculation between the exhaust manifold and the EGR valve. The exhaust gas flows through a bundle of pipes, through which in turn the engine coolant flows. Through this cooling the NOx-emissions are reducible by up to 15 percent and the particle emissions by up to eight percent.
The operating costs for the BMW drivers are also low: the new 320d with the M47 engine consumes just 5.7 litres in the EU mix and has a great driving performance (0-62 mph in 9.9 seconds, top speed 129 mph). At the same time the maintenance costs are very low: on average a service is only due every 22,500 kilometres.
The trick with the blades: the guide blade on the turbine side of the turbocharger is adjusted automatically, which enormously improves the responding qualities and the pressure build up.
