First, we will emphasize its 45-year Apartheid history from 1948 to 1993. It was characterized by segregation between the white, the black and other races. By means of laws and mandatory documents the segregation was systematized up to a very detailed level. In order to preserve that system, the regime used cruel violence, especially during the decade of the 80s with President Botha. The country inherited from that system a significant inequality between black and white people, whose marks are visible up to these days.
Secondly, we will highlight the enormous resources that the country contains in the form of raw material, arable land and infrastructure.
Its mining reserves have one of the major concentrations of resources in the world, such as gold, diamonds, coal and other minerals. Mining contributes to about 20% out of the total exportations of South Africa, while it is also a source of raw materials for local industry.
Agriculture has a strong basis in spite of the presence of several deserted areas. It receives the help of a temperate climate and counts with a huge area of fertile lands, resulting in a diversity of plentiful crops.
Maize, sugar, tobacco, wheat, potatoes and fruits are some of the cultivated products, where sugar, corn and fruit take an outstanding place for exportation. After corn, wool is the second farm product for exportation. Apart from mutton breeding, there are also cattle and milk-cows, which are the base for dairy produce, such as butter, condensed milk, powder milk, cheese and fresh milk products.
Tourism is also a source of wealth for South Africa, due to the association of its natural beauty and the good infra-structure of roads and accommodations. Wild animals can be watched at their normal habitat, among them lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceros and buffalos, apart from a large variety of birds, reptiles, amphibious and mammals, etc.
In spite of its richness, South Africa is classified as a medium-developed country, but in fact the rich part of it is high-developed, whereas the poor part is still a low-developed country.

Le tourisme constitue également une source de richesse pour l'Afrique du Sud, du fait de l'association de sa beauté naturelle à ses bonnes infrastructures routières et ses logements.
