Hello,

Have been using a Mac computer for many years, but would like to shift to Linux and use more open source software when possible.

I will check out open source CAT Tools obviously. But many of my clients require me to use Trados. I'm using it in a Virtual Box on my Mac and plan to do the same on Linux.

So, wondering if some people have recommendations about system requirements for a new computer for that use. Would 16 GB RAM be enough for regular use

So, wondering if some people have recommendations about system requirements for a new computer for that use. Would 16 GB RAM be enough for regular use of a Virtual Box or would you directly go for 32?

Thanks,

Hi Pauline,

For regular use, I think 16 GB should be just fine, but it is not a bad idea to opt for a computer accepting more RAM if needed in the future.

Personally, I use CafeTran Espresso for non-online projects, including for Trados files and packages (it imports SDLTMs and SDLTBs too and has recently even added a compatible track changes feature). I only fire up an old Trados copy for (project preparation, if needed) a last check and occasional target file export.

Hi Pauline,

I only fire up an old Trados copy for (project preparation, if needed) a last check and occasional target file export. Other translators just finalize the files or export the package directly in CafeTran. I think this would make working on Linux even more enjoyable, but if your Virtualbox+Trados setup suits you on a Mac, it should work just as well on a comparable Linux box.
