As I said only two days ago (another quick poll): I haven't touched my laptop for some time...

PC May 17, 2017

I find it much more comfortable sitting at a desk with a full-sized screen. Last week I got myself a new office chair, as one of the wheels had broken on the old one quite a while ago and it was rickety and uncomfortable. The thing I dislike most about buying office chairs is having to assemble them, but this time I was lucky, as the shop had a really nice one on display at a reduced price, so I didn't have to put it together myself.

I mainly use laptops for work when travelling, or to access radio stations, movies or television via Internet.

After sudden blackouts May 17, 2017

Now I mostly use notebooks as PCs--with external 22"+ monitors and anti-RSI keyboards, so I don't need UPS and Wi-Fi adapters, let alone I can connect them and print directly via BT/Wi-Fi.

I also have a couple of PCs, a mono-block and several tablets for non-critical interim tasks, but used rarely for translation.

with a biggggg monitor connected to it.
My PC packed up a few months ago and I have not gotten around to fixing it / buying a new one yet, but this is also a good solution.

Desktop PC May 17, 2017

Call it a 'tower PC' if you like.

I want to draw a clear line between where I can and cannot work. This is why I have two desktop PCs and everything else stationary in my office. If I had a laptop, (1) the keyboard would be too tiny and (2) I would be tempted to work anywhere outside my office, which I just do not want to do.

What kind of question is this? May 17, 2017

We are on a site for language specialists, where the sloppy use of language is a no-no. One cannot contrast a laptop and a PC because a laptop is a PC. There are desktop PCs, laptop PCs, tablet PCs, rackmount PCs, embedded PCs and many others.

However, since 2006 iMac is a decent monitor and but ol'goody Core2Duo/i5/i7 PC hardware with (Mac) OS X a-la factory hackitosh, alas. My long lost last real Mac was G5'2005.

You bet, buying components separately would cost some 35% of the total price for it's still just a PC in disguise; could you re-vote?
Nevermind

Both, because, first of all, my laptop is a PC.

But even if "PC" intended to mean a desktop, then I'd say... both. I use my laptop connected to an external big screen, an external mouse and an external keyboard. In other words, I have a laptop, but I use it as a desktop. There would be no difference.

Sometimes I like to work outside and go to a bar or cafe. Then I could say I'm using a laptop... but always connected to an external mouse and keyboard... I couldn't work

All-in-one desktop PC May 18, 2017

I am a speed typist and I like a big screen and a comfortable chair. I simply cannot get the same kind of performance out of a laptop that I can out of a full desktop arrangement. That said, my tech wants me to get a laptop with a separate big screen and keyboard, mentioned already by others. I don't particularly see the advantage.

In the meantime, I've been drooling over the new Microsoft Surface, which I could also use instead of AutoCAD for my landscape designs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzMLA8YIgG0

I use my PC most of the time and the laptop is only for traveling. And I've mentioned several times before that, if you use an external keyboard, mouse and screen, you have just transformed your laptop into a PC (with disadvantages). So the ideal situation is doubtlessly to work on a desktop and have a laptop for mobility. But the main working tool is still the desktop. The laptop slows down when it heats (about 30 minutes), and keeps slowing down as it heats more (till about 1 hour). Then your ... See more

This does not happen to a desktop.Collapse
