Getting TagEditor to segment as I wish

I have TagEditor and Workbench 6.0.0.309 and have used Trados for about 7 years

Nearly all of my work is on DOC files, so imagine my frustration when I open an HTML file and cannot get TagEditor to interpret the [br] tag as the end of a segment.
I'm sure the solution is so simple that I can't possibly have just spent two fruitless hours trying to work it out ...

Any ideas?
