Dear all, I'd like to know if anybody has studied with the University of Portsmouth. They offer an MA Translation Studies (Distance Learning), although I am considering only doing a few translation modules to refresh translation of languages with which I have not been working recently. (I already have a translation degree.) Has anyone done this course or any of the modules? I'm looking for practical feedback. Many thanks, Tara | | | | Course good - depends what you're looking to achieve... | Jun 24, 2009 |
Hi Tara, I am in the third semester of the DL MA at the Uni of Portsmouth at the moment. The course is very good and I am definitely enjoying it, however you might want to also consider the courses offered by the universities of Birmingham or the City of London and Imperial College as they might better suit your needs. (I believe these are more practical, but can't tell you for sure.) The Portsmouth course comprises a lot of theory in modules such as 'Theory & Practice ... (I believe these are more practical, but can't tell you for sure.) The Portsmouth course comprises a lot of theory in modules such as 'Theory & Practice of Translation', so I wouldn't recommend these if you are looking to improve your actual translation skills. There are more practical translation modules such as 'Specialised Translation' run in lots of different language combinations, however I don't think students get to choose which areas to specialise in. I know we didn't for DE>EN, although those that were chosen were very useful and interesting (cultural translation, company reports & insurance, user manuals). One of the summer modules is a translation project - I'm not sure how useful this would be to you if you are already a practicing translator though. I hope my comments help; let me know if you have any more questions. Have a nice day, Denise ▲ Collapse | | | GASQUET Local time: 04:20 Spanisch > Englisch THEMENSTARTER
Thanks Lai An and Denise In fact, I don't really need an MA. I'm more interested in a practical course. Denise, Yes, the MA at Portsmouth sounds like it could be useful. I have seen that it is possible to simply do some modules only. I would really only be interested in the 'Specialised Translation' modules. I don't like the fact that you can't choose the areas of speciality; however, the ones you mention for German seem quite useful for the working world. ... I will check out the other universities you mention. Thanks (and sorry for not replying earlier).
