Speaking of the Roman "schola," the question is whether certain structures found in excavations are scholae or not:

Deren Existenz, z. B. als Versammlungsräume für Vereinigungen römischer Bürger oder/und Veteranen, ist sehr wahrscheinlich, wenn auch bisher noch nicht archäologisch nachgewiesen. Falls es sich bei einem außergewöhnlichen Apsidenbau mit ausgeprägter Portikus oder Vorhalle vor der porta principalis dextra des Kastells Ruffenhofen tatsächlich um eine schola handelt, würde diese einen prominenten, vielleicht sogar auf das ursprüngliche Layout des Kastellvicus **zurück gehenden Platz einnehmen.**

Their existence, e.g., as a meeting place for associations of Roman citizens and/or veterans, is very likely, but not yet been established archaeologically. If the unusual apsidal construction of a portico or porch in front of the porta principalis dextra at the Ruffenhofen fort really involves a schola, this would be taken for a prominent plaza, perhaps receding from the original layout of the fort-vicus.

The whole thing is a bit murky, but especially the queried phrase. What does it mean for a plaza to recede -- or is the meaning wrong?
