In this context/sentence...I'm also not sure yet what to do with the "power of living" bit but maybe that will be more clear if I know what Hinwendung is trying to say here.

: Interesting qn, Francis & Henry. Just now I'd tend towards Francis, as - here - Hinwendung yes dynamic but not necess. to stress 'away from A in fav. of B.' More as 'devotion', 'attention' etc. per se. Profound attunement/orientation/commitment?

In fact "attention" was my first thought. And you're right: "away from" would've been "die (zunehmend) stärkere Hinwendung zur ..", methinks.

I have found a nice example of Hinwendung in the context of painting. This is certainly how the word is being used in your example, but some slight differences (namely an adjective and a lack of "from" will require some modification):

As I said, the structure of your sentence requires some modification. But you could probably use:
... to illuminate the deep roots and the profound movement of his paintings toward the dynamism of life.
Unfortunately you lose the "deep" - "deep", but you won't be able to retain it anyway.

b) sich wenden u. eine bestimmte Richtung einschlagen: sich zum Ausgang h.
