http://www.testing.de/de/testing-katalog/boden.pdf may be of help - the source mentions a "Künzel rod" (lightweight dynamic penetrometer). In your case, I'd come up with an *English* solution along the lines of "compaction tests using a lightweight dynamic penetrometer (Künzel rod)". Hope that'll help you get the French version together ;-)
