A description of what a "gincana" is would be as helpful as the actual term. Please don't answer GYMKHANA, because I know it's not that.

Thanks, Alyson. This one was clear to me because it reminded me of the sports-day events I had at high school in Jacksonville.

kids club
"kids club" (or "kids' club" if you prefer the possessive) might work for an international audience.
A more UK-oriented approach might be "kids fête".
Or, since gymkhana is etymologically related, you could call it "gymkhana - without the horsey bit'" (kidding).

Jackie's Gymkana 2004
April 1, 2004, Jackie's Private School held its 1st-5th Grade Gymkana, which is a recital for their gymnastics program. Nic got to be part of the Color Guard with some of his Pack-mates during the opening ceremony, then had to quickly strip down to his gymnastics uniform and join his class. He showed his skills at floor exercise, balance beam, trampoline and vault. I think his favorite part was receiving his trophy!

Amy, would you say this was a US usage? I've not come across it in UK English. |

Field Day
I've finished translating a subtitle for a major Hollywood Studio project in which this term was required as a huge part of the plot. I'd have to suggest that the closest meaning of GINCANA both in Brazil and other Spanish Speaking Countries of Latin America has to be FIELD DAY, which was never mentioned. I just created this account to share that.Case being that a real "gincana", by definition, includes not only sport events and races but also a kid's fête and a variety of silly competitions like impersonations, talent shows etc all at once during the course of a day, in the same spirit of Field Days from Companies and Churches in the US (at least). Regards.
Example sentence:
Kids and parents spent all their energy during the company's field day activities.
Shooting a movie in Brazil is like being in a constant field day (From the Making of the movie "Blindness", from the DVD). The speaker actually fails to translate the term to English.
