1.1 Start up
During standstill the gas turbine remains in a state of start-up readiness unless maintenance work is taking place. To have the gas turbine at highest possible state of readiness, a thermostat controls preheating of the lube oil and the generator.
Before a start can be initiated the start release criteria (no protection signal active, fuel valve in closed position, ignition OFF, etc.) are checked. If the criteria are fulfilled the gas turbine can be started.
A distinction is made between cold and warm starts to protect the components in the hot gas path. The ignition and acceleration fuel flow is controlled depending on the gas turbine temperature. “TAT” is used to indicate the temperature of the structure. A hot turbine requires less fuel flow for the same acceleration rate because of remaining heat in the hot section. The heat flow into the structure is lower. Also tip clearances are reduced resulting in improved efficiency. Tip clearances are smaller at warm start conditions because the casing shrinks faster than the rotor during cool down.
1.1.1 Preparation for Rotation
Prior to start up of the engine, perform the pre-start checks according “GT13E2-Procedure walk down for start-up and operation” /Ref.6/. The complete walk-down is to confirm system readiness, plan enough time to carry out the walk-down.

1.1 Opstarten
In rust bevindt de gasturbine zich in een toestand van gereedheid tenzij er onderhoudswerkzaamheden plaatsvinden. Om ervoor te zorgen dat de gasturbine zich in de hoogst mogelijke staat van gereedheid bevindt, zorgt een thermostaat ervoor dat de smeerolie en de generator voorverwarmd worden.
Voordat de turbine kan worden opgestart, moeten de criteria voor het opstarten worden gecontroleerd (veiligheidssignaal uit, brandstofventiel dicht, ontbrander UIT,enz.). Als aan al deze voorwaarden is voldaan, kan de gasturbine worden opgestart.
Er wordt onderscheid gemaakt tussen een koude en een warme opstart om de onderdelen in het pad van het warme gas te beschermen. De brandstofstroom bij ontbranding en versnelling wordt afhankelijk van de temperatuur in de gasturbine geregeld. “TAT” wordt gebruikt om de temperatuur van de structuur aan te geven. Een warme turbine heeft minder gasstroming nodig bij dezelfde versnelling vanwege de overgebleven warmte in het warme deel. De warmtestroming in het apparaat is lager. Ook ontstaat er minder speling, wat resulteert in een grotere efficiëntie. Dat de speling kleiner is tijdens een warme opstart, komt doordat het omhulsel tijdens het afkoelen sneller krimpt dan de motor.
1.1.1 Voorbereiding voor het ronddraaien
Voordat de motor wordt opgestart moeten de pre-start controles uitgevoerd worden zoals beschreven staat in de “GT13E2-procedure doorloop voor opstarten en uitvoeren” /Ref.6/. De complete doorloop is nodig om er zeker van te zijn dat het systeem in gereedheid is. Neem voldoende tijd om deze doorloop uit te voeren.
