Ausgangstext - Englisch EVERYBODY has his own tale of terrible translation to tell — an incomprehensible restaurant menu in
Croatia, a comically illiterate warning sign on a French beach. “Human-engineered” translation is just as
inadequate in more important domains. In our courts and hospitals, in the military and security services,
underpaid and overworked translators make muddles out of millions of vital interactions. Machine
translation can certainly help in these cases. Its legendary bloopers are often no worse than the errors made
by hard-pressed humans.
Machine translation has proved helpful in more urgent situations as well. When Haiti was devastated by an
earthquake in January, aid teams poured in to the shattered island, speaking dozens of languages — but not
Haitian Creole. How could a trapped survivor with a cellphone get usable information to rescuers? If he had
to wait for a Chinese or Turkish or an English interpreter to turn up he might be dead before being
understood. Carnegie Mellon University instantly released its Haitian Creole spoken and text data, and a
network of volunteer developers produced a rough-and-ready machine translation system for Haitian
Creole in little more than a long weekend. It didn’t produce prose of great beauty. But it worked.
The advantages and disadvantages of machine translation have been the subject of increasing debate
among human translators lately because of the growing strides made in the last year by the newest major
entrant in the field, Google Translate. But this debate actually began with the birth of machine translation
itself.
The need for crude machine translation goes back to the start of the cold war. The United States decided it
had to scan every scrap of Russian coming out of the Soviet Union, and there just weren’t enough
translators to keep up (just as there aren’t enough now to translate all the languages that the United States
wants to monitor). The cold war coincided with the invention of computers, and “cracking Russian” was
one of the first tasks these machines were set.
The father of machine translation, Warren Weaver, chose to regard Russian as a “code” obscuring the real
meaning of the text. His team and its successors here and in Europe proceeded in a commonsensical way: a
natural language, they reckoned, is made of a lexicon (a set of words) and a grammar (a set of rules). If you
could get the lexicons of two languages inside the machine (fairly easy) and also give it the whole set of
rules by which humans construct meaningful combinations of words in the two languages (a more dubious
proposition), then the machine would be able translate from one “code” into another.
Academic linguists of the era, Noam Chomsky chief among them, also viewed a language as a lexicon and a
grammar, able to generate infinitely many different sentences out of a finite set of rules. But as the anti-
Chomsky linguists at Oxford commented at the time, there are also infinitely many motor cars that can
come out of a British auto plant, each one having something different wrong with it. Over the next four
decades, machine translation achieved many useful results, but, like the British auto industry, it fell far
short of the hopes of the 1950s.
Now we have a beast of a different kind. Google Translate is a statistical machine translation system, which
means that it doesn’t try to unpick or understand anything. Instead of taking a sentence to pieces and then
rebuilding it in the “target” tongue as the older machine translators do, Google Translate looks for similar
sentences in already translated texts somewhere out there on the Web. Having found the most likely
existing match through an incredibly clever and speedy statistical reckoning device, Google Translate
coughs it up, raw or, if necessary, lightly cooked. That’s how it simulates — but only simulates — what we
suppose goes on in a translator’s head.
Google Translate, which can so far handle 52 languages, sidesteps the linguists’ theoretical question of what
language is and how it works in the human brain. In practice, languages are used to say the same things
over and over again. For maybe 95 percent of all utterances, Google’s electronic magpie is a fabulous tool.
But there are two important limitations that users of this or any other statistical machine translation system
need to understand.
The target sentence supplied by Google Translate is not and must never be mistaken for the “correct
translation.” That’s not just because no such thing as a “correct translation” really exists. It’s also because
Google Translate gives only an expression consisting of the most probable equivalent phrases as computed
by its analysis of an astronomically large set of paired sentences trawled from the Web.
The data comes in large part from the documentation of international organizations. Thousands of human
translators working for the United Nations and the European Union and so forth have spent millions of
hours producing precisely those pairings that Google Translate is now able to cherry-pick. The human
translations have to come first for Google Translate to have anything to work with.
The variable quality of Google Translate in the different language pairings available is due in large part to
the disparity in the quantities of human-engineered translations between those languages on the Web.
But what of real writing? Google Translate can work apparent miracles because it has access to the world
library of Google Books. That’s presumably why, when asked to translate a famous phrase about love from
“Les Misérables” — “On n’a pas d’autre perle à trouver dans les plis ténébreux de la vie” — Google Translate
comes up with a very creditable “There is no other pearl to be found in the dark folds of life,” which just
happens to be identical to one of the many published translations of that great novel. It’s an impressive
trick for a computer, but for a human? All you need to do is get the old paperback from your basement.
And the program is very patchy. The opening sentence of Proust’s “In Search of Lost Time” comes out as an
ungrammatical “Long time I went to bed early,” and the results for most other modern classics are just as
unusable.
Can Google Translate ever be of any use for the creation of new literary translations into English or another
language? The first thing to say is that there really is no need for it to do that: would-be translators of
foreign literature are not in short supply — they are screaming for more opportunities to publish their work.
But even if the need were there, Google Translate could not do anything useful in this domain. It is not
conceived or programmed to take into account the purpose, real-world context or style of any utterance.
(Any system able to do that would be a truly epochal achievement, but such a miracle is not on the agenda
of even the most advanced machine translation developers.)
However, to play devil’s advocate for a moment, if you were to take a decidedly jaundiced view of some
genre of contemporary foreign fiction (say, French novels of adultery and inheritance), you could surmise
that since such works have nothing new to say and employ only repeated formulas, then after a sufficient
number of translated novels of that kind and their originals had been scanned and put up on the Web,
Google Translate should be able to do a pretty good simulation of translating other regurgitations of the
same ilk.
So what? That’s not what literary translation is about. For works that are truly original — and therefore
worth translating — statistical machine translation hasn’t got a hope. Google Translate can provide
stupendous services in many domains, but it is not set up to interpret or make readable work that is not
routine — and it is unfair to ask it to try. After all, when it comes to the real challenges of literary
translation, human beings have a hard time of it, too.

personas» resulta igual de inadecuada en otros
ámbitos más importantes. En nuestros tribu-
nales y hospitales, en los organismos militares
y de seguridad, hay traductores mal pagados y
sobrecargados de trabajo que se equivocan con
millones de interacciones vitales. No cabe duda
de que la traducción automática puede ayudar en
esos casos. Sus legendarias meteduras de pata
no suelen ser peores que las cometidas por las
personas sometidas a presión.
Y la traducción automática ha demostrado su util-
idad en situaciones más urgentes. Cuando Haití
quedó devastado por un terremoto en enero, los
equipos de ayuda llegaron de forma masiva a la
arrasada isla hablando decenas de idiomas, pero
no en criollo haitiano. ¿Cómo podía un supervivi-
ente atrapado entre los escombros proporcionar
información útil a los rescatadores a través de un
teléfono móvil? De tener que esperar la llegada
de un intérprete chino, turco o inglés, quizá
habría muerto antes de ser comprendido. La
Universidad Carnegie Mellon enseguida facilitó
sus datos de voz y texto compilados en criollo
haitiano, y una red de desarrolladores voluntarios
improvisó un sistema de traducción automática
en poco más de un fin de semana largo. No pro-
ducía una prosa de gran belleza; pero funcionó.
De modo reciente, las ventajas y desventajas de
la traducción automática han sido objeto de un
debate cada vez mayor entre los traductores de
carne y hueso debido a los grandes progresos
realizados durante el último año por Google
Translate, el último gran competidor en este
campo. De todos modos, se trata de un debate
que comenzó con el nacimiento de la propia tra-
ducción automática.
La necesidad de una traducción automática ru-
dimentaria se remonta a los inicios de la Guerra
Fría. Los Estados Unidos decidieron que tenían
que analizar cualquier texto en ruso procedente
de la Unión Soviética, y no había suficientes
traductores para hacer todo el trabajo (como
tampoco los hay ahora para traducir todos los
idiomas que los Estados Unidos quieren super-
visar). La Guerra Fría coincidió con la invención
de los ordenadores, y «descifrar el ruso» fue una
de las primeras tareas encomendadas a esas
máquinas.
Warren Weaver, el padre de la traducción au-
tomática, decidió abordar el ruso como si se tra-
tara de un «código» que oscurecía el verdadero
significado del texto. Su equipo y los que vinieron
después, tanto en los Estados Unidos como
en Europa, optaron por proceder con sentido
común: consideraron que una lengua natural está
formada por un léxico (un conjunto de palabras)
y una gramática (un conjunto de reglas). Si se
pudiera introducir en una máquina los léxicos
de dos idiomas (algo relativamente fácil) y se le
pudiera proporcionar además el conjunto com-
pleto de reglas mediante las cuales las perso-
nas construyen combinaciones significativas de
palabras en esos dos idiomas (una cuestión más
discutible), la máquina sería capaz de traducir de
un «código» a otro.
Los lingüistas académicos de la época (entre
los que descollaba Noam Chomsky) también
consideraron que una lengua era un léxico y una
gramática capaz de generar una infinidad de
frases diferentes a partir de un conjunto limitado
de reglas. Ahora bien, como observaron en aquel
entonces los lingüistas antichomskyanos de
Oxford, también son una infinidad los coches que
pueden salir de una fábrica de automóviles bri-
tánica, cada uno con su propio defecto diferente.
A lo largo de las cuatro décadas posteriores, la
traducción automática alcanzó diversos resul-
tados provechosos; pero, al igual que el sector
automovilístico británico, no llegó a cumplir con
las expectativas de la década de 1950.
Estamos ahora ante una criatura de otra especie.
Google Translate es un sistema de traducción
automática estadístico, lo que quiere decir que
no intenta desmenuzar ni comprender nada. En
lugar de desmontar una frase y volver a montarla
en la lengua «meta», como hacen los traductores
automáticos más antiguos, Google Translate bus-
ca en algún lugar de la Red frases similares en
textos ya traducidos. Una vez localizada la com-
binación existente más probable por medio de un
dispositivo de reconocimiento estadístico in-
creíblemente rápido e inteligente, Google Trans-
late la escupe cruda o, si es necesario, un poco
cocinada. Y de este modo simula ─sólo simula─
lo que suponemos que ocurre en la cabeza de un
traductor.
Google Translate, que maneja en este momento
52 idiomas, esquiva la pregunta teórica de los
lingüistas sobre qué es el lenguaje y cómo fun-
ciona en el cerebro humano. En la práctica, los
idiomas se usan para decir las mismas cosas
una y otra vez. Quizá en el 95 por ciento de
todos los enunciados, la urraca electrónica de
Google es una herramienta fabulosa. Con todo,
tiene dos importantes limitaciones que es nec-
esario que comprendan los usuarios de este o de
cualquier otro sistema de traducción automática
estadístico.
La frase meta proporcionada por Google Trans-
late no es ni debe confundirse nunca con la
«traducción correcta». No sólo porque no existe
tal cosa como una «traducción correcta». Sino
también porque Google Translate sólo ofrece
una expresión formada por los sintagmas equiva-
lentes más probables tal como los ha calculado
su análisis de un conjunto astronómicamente
elevado de frases emparejadas encontradas en
la Red.
Los datos proceden en gran parte de la docu-
mentación de organizaciones internacionales.
Miles de traductores humanos empleados por
las Naciones Unidas, la Unión Europea y otros
organismos han dedicado millones de horas a
producir con precisión esos dobletes que Google
Translate es ahora capaz de seleccionar. Deben
existir traducciones humanas para que Google
Translate tenga algo con lo que trabajar.
La calidad variable de Google Translate en los
diferentes dobletes lingüísticos disponibles se
debe en gran parte a la disparidad entre las
enormes cantidades existentes en la Red de
traducciones hechas por personas entre dichas
lenguas.
¿Y qué hay de la escritura de verdad? Google
Translate puede realizar milagros aparentes
porque tiene acceso a la biblioteca mundial de
Google Books. Seguramente por esto, cuando
se le pide traducir al inglés una famosa frase de
amor de Les misérables («On n’a pas d’autre
perle à trouver dans les plis ténébreux de la vie»)
Google Translate nos ofrece este digno resul-
tado: «There is no other pearl to be found in the
dark folds of life», que resulta ser idéntico a una
de las muchas traducciones publicadas de esta
gran novela. Es una hazaña impresionante para
un ordenador, pero ¿y para una persona? Basta
con ir a buscar la vieja edición en rústica del
trastero.
Además, el programa es muy irregular. La frase
inicial de En busca del tiempo perdido de Proust
aparece como un agramatical «Long time I went
to bed early»; e igual de inservibles son los
resultados en el caso de la mayoría de los otros
clásicos modernos.
¿Podrá Google Translate ser útil alguna vez para
la creación de nuevas traducciones literarias al
inglés o a otro idioma? Lo primero que hay que
decir es que, en realidad, no hay necesidad de
que haga eso: los aspirantes a traductores de
literatura extranjera no escasean, y están pidi-
endo a gritos más oportunidades para publicar su
trabajo.
Ahora bien, aun cuando hubiera necesidad,
Google Translate no podría hacer nada útil en
este ámbito. No está concebido ni programado
para tener en cuenta la intención, el contexto
real ni el estilo de ningún enunciado. (Cualquier
sistema capaz de hacerlo constituiría un autén-
tico logro histórico, pero ese milagro ni siquiera
está en el orden del día de los desarrolladores
más avanzados de traducción automática.)
Sin embargo ─haciendo por un momento de
abogado del diablo─, si uno adoptara una visión
claramente negativa sobre algún género de fic-
ción extranjera contemporánea (por ejemplo, las
novelas francesas sobre adulterios y herencias) y
considerara que tales obras no tienen nada nue-
vo que decir y sólo emplean fórmulas repetidas,
cabría suponer que, una vez escaneado y subido
a la Red un número suficiente de tales novelas
traducidas, Google Translate podría hacer una
simulación bastante buena de la traducción de
otras regurgitaciones de esa índole.
¿Y qué? La traducción literaria no es eso. Con
obras realmente originales —y, por lo tanto, que
vale la pena traducir— la traducción automática
estadística no tiene ninguna posibilidad. Google
Translate puede proporcionar servicios formi-
dables en muchos ámbitos, pero no está con-
figurado para interpretar o hacer legible una obra
no rutinaria, y no es justo pedirle que lo intente.
Después de todo, ante los auténticos desafíos de
la traducción literaria, también los seres humanos
lo pasan mal.
