إن لاقط قلب المفاعل هو صهريج يتم تركيبه تحت وعاء المفاعل؛ وفي حالة وقوع حادث متوقع، يمسك لاقط قلب المفاعل بالقلب المنصهر الممزوج بمواد من هيكل المفاعل وبالتالي يمنع أي ضرر محتمل قد يلحق بوعاء الاحتواء كما يقي من انتشار المواد المشعة في البيئة. وعندما يحتك القلب المنصهر بالأشرطة المصنعة من مادة خاصة والموجودة داخل لاقط قلب المفاعل فإنه يخسر حرارة تراكمية؛ وتحدث عدد من العمليات الكيميائية التي تزيد تدريجياً من صلابة القلب المنصهر في حين تمنع انبعاث المواد المشعة في الهواء داخل وعاء الاحتواء، كما تهيأ الظروف المناسبة لصهارة باطن المفاعل النووي والتبريد على المدى الطويل.
وتم تركيب لاقط قلب المفاعل لأول مرة في العالم في محطة توليد الطاقة النووية في تايوان (الصين)؛ أما أول محطات الطاقة النووية الروسية المجهزة بلاقط قلب المفاعل فهي محطة الطاقة النووية الثانية في نوفوفورونز ومحطة الطاقة النووية الثانية في لينينغراد.
اصبح هذا الحل الفني معترفاً به في جميع أنحاء العالم ومطبقاً في جميع محطات الطاقة النووية روسية الصنع التي هي قيد الإنشاء حالياً.
