Ausgangstext - Englisch Because of XXX’s exeptional position in the jewelry world we believe that our responsibilities with respect to society encompass not only our own operations and our entire supply chain but also involve a broader role in seeking to make a difference in the jewelry industry at large – particularly in the mining and production of precious metals and minerals.
Over the past years we have sought to better understand the challenges which our industry faces in order to find relevant solutions to issues associated with large scale extraction as well as artisanal mining of precious metals. These include social and environmental damages, and in some cases, distressing accounts of human rights abuse. While these types of issues are not exclusive to the jewelry supply chain and certainly will not be resolved by the industry alone, without the involvement and support of government authorities, our industry must rise to the challenge – a gift of jewelry is a particularly symbolic one, and our customers trust us to ensure that their purchase lives up to its sparkle.
At XXX, our gold suppliers have unequivocally committed, in writing, to responsible gold sourcing practices, as described by the Responsible Jewellery Council in its Code of Practices. They have also pledged to put in place within their operations, and within their sphere of influence, everything they can to prevent gold which may finance human rights violations from being used in the watch and jewelry supply chain, particularly when it comes to the gold products they supply to us. As the Responsible Jewellery Council is about to launch its certification system, our suppliers are now required to join the RJC and have their operations certified to its standard, which covers human rights, ethical, social and environmental performance.
We believe the RJC standard will be a powerful and effective way to drive positive change through the jewelry supply chain from mining all the way to retail. Indeed, 150 organizations have already agreed to adopt the RJC standard even before the system launch, an encouraging sign that momentum will continue to grow. The desire to have a credible, reliable way of recognizing companies with responsible business practices, and the belief that our entire industry – and others such as financial institutions – would benefit from the availability of such a standard is one of the reasons which drove XXX to co-found the RJC in 2005.

Ausgangstext - Englisch A STREAMLINED KILLER
If any dinosaur deserves to be described as built for attack it is Deinonychus, a streamlined killer that combined agility and speed with ferocious weaponry. Standing about 2 metres tall and up to 3 metres long, Deinonychus had the light, long-legged physique of a fast runner. A sheath of bony rods along the tail made it stand out stiffly behind. This acted as a counterbalance when sprinting after a victim, giving extra manoeuvrability. Deinonychus had a slim neck and lightweight skull, ideal for quick, snapping bites. Teeth were backwardly curved for efficient meat slicing action and used in combination with the front and hind claws. The arms acted as long grappling hooks, grabbing a small creature to keep it still or allowing Deinonychus to leap up and hang on to a larger dinosaur. The second claw on the hind foot was like a crescent-shaped slashing knife. It has been suggested that a blow, delivered with a massive, sweeping kick, would have been enough to rip open the belly of a victim or tear it in half. However, tests led by Phil Manning using a robotic model of the hind limb and a pig carcass, show it produced small puncture holes, but no ripping or slashing marks. A comparison of the Deinonychus claw with a range of modern claws from reptiles, birds and mammals, showed that neither the claw bone or the keratinous sheath that covered it had a sharp cutting edge on the under surface. The extreme curvature I of the claw proved to be similar to those of tree trunk climbing birds, which use them for clinging and gripping.
It seems that Deinonychus used these claws as climbing aids — like a climber's j crampons — to hook onto and clamber up the skin of their prey, in combination with their grasping hand claws, while their sharp, serrated teeth did their deadly work. The whole foot was adapted to keep the big claw in good condition. When walking or running it was pulled up and back to avoid blunting on the ground. When attacking, it could swivel through 180° to find the best possible angle of entry.
When the first Deinonychus fossils were found in Montana in 1964, scientists noticed that there were the remains of several of the predators near the body of a much larger herbivore, Tenontosaurus. Did they hunt in groups? Certainly Deinonychus' brain was relatively large and probably well developed in the areas vital to a pack hunter, namely those of sight and sound. Bringing down a big dinosaur would have provided several days' food supply, even if it had to be shared.
The dinosaur era produced many fine hunters, but in Deinonychus we see the near perfect balance of an attacker's skills. Intelligence to stalk, ambush or mount a coordinated attack, the speed to run a quarry down and the weapons to kill and dismember it.
