Ausgangstext - Irisch Fionn Mac Cumhaill agus Ridire an Gháire
Do bhíodh an sgéal so d'á aithris fad ó shoin, agus is fad ó bhí, dá mbeinn-se ann an uair úd agus a bheith ann anois ba chríona liath an sgéalaidhe mé: bheadh sgéal nuadh nó sean-sgéal agam; do chumhfainn féin sgéal nó bheidhinn gan aon sgéal. Acht is é rud do bhí mé ag brath ar a rádh go raibh fear ann d'ár bh'ainm Fionn Mac Cumhaill, agus do bhí sé i n-a dhuine de na Fiannaibh. Do théidheadh sé féin agus na Fianna eile amach ag seilg gach uile lá, agus ar tuitim na hoidhche bhíodh siad ins an mbaile arís.
Aon lá amháin do-chuaidh Fionn agus na Fianna amach ag seilg, agus do bhíodar ag siubhal i gcaitheamh an lae tré coiltibh agus tré sléibhtibh nó go dtáinig an tráthnóna, agus do bhí siad ag tarraingt a bhaile an uair do-rinne Fionn moill i n-a ndiaidh. Do bhí sé tuirseach, sáruighthe dé bhárr an lae, agus shuidh se síos ar chnocán le taoibh na fairrge, ar aghaidh na gréine, le n-a sgíth do leigean. Ní raibh sé i bhfad i n-a shuidhe an uair tháinig gasúr beag agus do shuidh sé le n-a ais.
"Cuir aimsir orm-sa," ar seisean.
"Maise, cad é an mhaith thú féin? Ar ndóigh ní bhfuil iomchar na n-éanlaith féin ionnat, an bhfuil? Cad é an mhaith do bheadh dam ionnad? Nó cad dó dhéanfá dham dá gcuirfinn aimsir ort?" arsa Fionn.
Übersetzung - Englisch Finn MacCool and the Laughing Knight
This story was already being told long ago, and it has been a long time since then. If I was alive at that time and still here now, I’d be a withered and grey old storyteller. I might have a new story or an old story, and if I had no story to tell, I’d simply make one up. But the thing that I was intending to tell is that there was a man by the name of Finn MacCool, and he was one of the Fianna. He and the other Fianna would go out hunting every single day, and at nightfall they would be back home again.
One day, Finn and the Fianna went out hunting. They walked all day long through forests and mountains until evening arrived, and while they were on their way home, Finn slowed them down. He was tired, worn out from the day, and sat down on a hillock next to the sea to rest for a while in the sunlight. He wasn’t sitting there long before a little boy approached and sat down next to him.
“Take me on as your servant,” he said.
“Well, well, what have you got to offer? You’re not very strong, are you? What good would I get out of it? What would you do for me if I took you on?” said Finn.
