Il nuovo secolo inizia, in Italia, con un evento che rappresenta forse il massimo concentrato di drammaticità simbolica per una comunità politica da poco costituitasi: un regidicio. L’assassinio di Umberto I re d’Italia avviene a Monza il 29 luglio 1900 per mano di Gaetano Bresci, un anarchico di ispirazione bakuniniana emigrato in America, dove le leggi locali, tolleranti in tema di estradizione politica, avevano attratto una consistente comunità legata a questa variante dottrinale. Avendo saputo della nomina a senatore a vita del generale Bava Beccaris a opera del re, Bresci, indignato, progetta il regicidio e organizza il proprio ritorno in Italia. Umberto I viene così ucciso con tre colpi di pistola, dopo che ha presenziato al concorso ginnico organizzato dalla società sportiva monzese Forti e Liberi: lo sport, per una via solo apparentamente tangente, interseca molto precocemente gli snodi più alti della politica novecentesca. È solo un’avvisaglia: molto altro accadrà nei cento anni seguenti.
Il nuovo re, Vittorio Emanuele III, non ha certo una corporatura da sportivo: piccolo e con gambe comunque sproporzionatamente corte, sofre semmai i complessi di chi non è stato beneficiato, da nessun punto di vista, del giusto physique du rôle. Però – lui o il suo entourage – è attento più di quel che si dice a mantenere visibile la Corona presso i sudditi e coglie anche le opportunità propagandistiche insite nella crescita del mondo sportivo. Nel ciclismo, in particolare.

In Italy, the new century began with perhaps the most symbolic and dramatic event that a fledgling political community could go through; a royal assassination. King Umberto I was killed in Monza on 29th July 1900 by Gaetano Bresci, a Bakuninian influenced emigrant to an America whose local laws, showing tolerance on the issue of political extradition, had attracted a substantial number of the doctrine’s followers. Having heard about the King making General Bava Beccaris a life senator, an outraged Bresci planned a return to his homeland and a royal assassination. Umberto I was shot three times after having presided over a gymnastics competition organised by the Monza-based sports club “Forti e Liberi” (“Strong and Free”). So, sport indirectly and prematurely converged with the highest echelons of 20th century politics; it was only a foretaste of what was to come in the following hundred years.
The new King, Vittorio Emanuele III, certainly didn’t have a sporting build; he was small with disproportionately short legs and suffered from not having been blessed, in any way, with a physique befitting of a King. However, the King and his entourage were very active in keeping the Crown visible amongst his subjects and made use of the propaganda opportunities inherent in the growing world of sport, especially in cycling.
