Ilusión. Las 204 horas que transcurren entre el chupinazo del 6 de julio y el "pobre de mí" del 14 no son suficientes para los más sanfermineros. De ahí que muchos pamploneses, al ritmo de "1 de enero, 2 de febrero" inicien el primer día del año una peculiar e ilusionante escalera coma ocurrente excusa para juntarse en torno a una mesa, darle un repaso a las fiestas del año anterior y, sobre todo, Ir preparando las próximas.
Emoción. Los Sanfermines son fiestas de emociones. Claro que poner negro sobre blanco esa faceta de nuestras vidas no deja de ser un reto complicado. Me limitaré a comentar que muchos la viven el 6 de julio, cuando el chupinazo asciende por encima de la Casa Consistorial anunciando el inicio de la fiesta. Otros tienden a emocionarse al paso de la procesión de San Fermín, mientras algún txistulari o jotero dedica alguna pieza al santo. El encierro, por supuesto, también pone frecuentemente la piel de gallina. En San Fermín, creo haberlo dicho, las emociones encuentran fácil acomodo. Y algunas son tan fuertes que nunca se olvidan.
Música. Sin música no habría Sanfermines sin Manuel Turrillas alguien tendría que inventarla de nuevo . El popular músico, de cuyo nacimiento se cumplen 100 años, es el creador de la clásica estampa sanferminera, mezcla de biribilketa y Jota, que utilizo para escribir los himnos a las peñas de la ciudad. Turillas fue clarinetista de La Pamplonesa, la Banda Municipal (¡qué lujo de banda!) presente en todos los momentos clave de la fiesta. En Sanfermines también suena el txistu, la gaita, las fanfarres y multitud de grupos, de todo tipo y calidad, que recorren las calles del casco viejo arrastrando 3 a la gente y formando un continuo y variado concierto.
Grandeza. La grandeza de los Gigantes, tan grandes que son capaces de devolvernos todos los años a la infancia. Se los debemos a Tadeo Amorena, artesano nacido en el precioso barrio Bozate de Arizcun, mítico enclave de la marginada raza de los agotes. Son cuatro parejas de reyes y reinas que representan a un mundo al que le falta Oceanía y cuentan con una pintoresca corte de kilikis, cabezudos, y zaldikos que les preceden. En las mañanas sanfermineras, nada como perderse por las estrechas calles medievales de la ciudad y estar atento al sonido de la gaita. Después aparecerán huyendo de los kilikis. Y detrás, majestuosas, las figuras de los gigantes de Pamplona con su casi siglo y medio tan bién llevado. Lo dejó escrito Friaco Iraizoz, un popular poeta pamplonés del siglo XIX: “¿Oyes las notas vibrantes de esa gaita tan chillona? / Pues espera unos instantes / qué vas a ver a los gigantes / los gigantes de Pamplona”.
Desmadre. Es componente fundamental de estas fiestas. En San Fermín se hacen cosas que nadie en su sano juicio firmaría, cómo ponerse delante de un toro de 600 kg, bailar hasta reventar, acudir diariamente a la corrida sin ser aficionado, o comer y beber como si fuera a acabarse el mundo. Claro que algunos traspasan la barrera del desmadre para instalarse en la imbecilidad cuando agarran a los toros en el encierro, dan suelta a sus ganas de bronca o se tiran de lo alto de una fuente confiando en que alguien les recogerá antes de estrellarse contra el adoquín de la calle Navarrería. Debe ser el tributo, generosamente pagado, por tener unas fiestas tan famosas.
Übersetzung - Englisch Excitement: The 204 hours between “el Chupinazo” on the 6th of July and the “Pobre de mí” on the 14th are not enough for the most passionate “sanfermineros”. Music: Without music there would be no Sanfermines and without Manuel Turrillas such music would not exist. The well-known musician, who was born 100 year ago, is the creator of the classic sanfermines anthem, he used a mix of biribikelta and jota to compose the hymns for the social clubs known as “ peñas”. Turrillas used to play the clarinet in the municipal orchestra, which was present throughout all the festivity key moments. During sanfermines you can also hear the txistu, bagpipes, the fanfares and a great number of groups of all types, as they roam the streets of the city’s old quarter followed by people and forming a continuous and diverse concert.
Greatness: The greatness of the giants, such size that could take us back to our very childhood. To Tadeo Amoreena we owe them, a craftsman born in the majestic neighbourhood of Bozate de Arizcun,a mythical enclave of the marginalised agote race. The four couples composed of a king and queen represent a word in which Australia is missing, with a picturesque court of kilikis, big heads and zaldikos preceding them. On a san fermin morning there is nothing like getting lost in the narrow streets of the medieval city while listening to the sound of the bagpipes. Then the children running away from the kilikis would come forth. And following them, majestic, the figures of the Pamplona giants which are almost a century old. The writer Friaco Iraizoz, a popular 19th century poet from Pamplona, wrote about it in a poem: ‘Do you hear the vibrant notes of those loud bagpipes? / Wait a few seconds / They will be in sight… / the giants of Pamplona’.
Hype: This is a fundamental component of the fiestas. InSanfermín, people do things that no one in their brains would do, as standing in front of a 600-kilo bull, dancing until exhaustion, going to bullfights every day even though you’re not a fan or eating and drinking as tthe world were coming to an end. Of course, there are some who cross the line which separates chaos from stupidity when they grab a bull by the horns during an encierro, give free reign to their craving for a fight, or throw themselves from a fountain in the confidence that someone will catch them, just before they hit the cobblestones on the calle Navarrería. It must be the tribute, dearly paid, for hosting such famous fiestas.
Sadness: Perhaps it is the excitement, the saint, the bulls, the emotion, the music, the greatness or the hype of the sanfermines, or perhaps it is for these and many other reasons that when the 14th rolls around one is saddened to discover that the passage of time is inexorable, even during a fantastic event such as this one. The lyrics of the closing song of the fiesta sum it up: ‘Poor me, poor me, the San Fermín fiestas are over’.
