Übersetzung - Englisch I have finished reading a book containing quotes of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, the Founding President of Tanzania. The book is in Kiswahili language and I have been sharing a few quotes here for the past few weeks. The title of the book is Nukuu za Kiswahili za Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere Kutoka Kwenye Hotuba na Maandiko by Christopher C. Liundi. In the quotes, I was able to get into the mind of Mwalimu Nyerere, his philosophy, his humour, and the frustrations he went through in building a nascent country. Over time, I have watched quite a number of his speeches available on YouTube. I have been irritated at some of the things that irritated him and laughed with him on the things he laughed at but in all, I always found in him the unfailing desire to improve the lot of his people. He got certain things wrong, and he admitted to them, but he always came across to me as a human being with an open heart and mind. And that is what this world is crying out for. The one quote that tickled me is one in which he says that when one is elected a President, he or she should tell relatives in clear terms that State House is a holy place and that he or she does not intend to convert it to a den of thieves and middlemen. In Kiswahili, it is even better: "Ikulu ni pahali patakatifu, sitaligeuza kuwa pango la wezi na walanguzi". To say that I have finished reading this book is erroneous because reading it once, twice, or thrice, is never enough. There are books that we constantly retreat to. And this might be one of those.
