Ausgangstext - Englisch In the mid-1990s "downsizing" was a buzzword that was far from popular with IT managers. As businesses tried to reduce costs by moving software from expensive mainframes to PC-based platforms, they found that in most instances the new applications came a poor second to their mainframe equivalents in terms of stability and performance.
What is more, the cost of introducing the many new applications being developed often wiped out the expected savings without offering the functional depth provided by the old programs. Before long, in any case, the new headaches caused by web and e-business implementation meant that downsizing was put firmly on the back burner. With things now calmer in that area, however, the need to drive down costs appears more urgent than ever before.
Thanks to the many advances in technology, even large, business-critical applications can now be moved safely from mainframes to more cost-efficient platforms - without compromising on performance. And the main thing about business-critical applications, of course, is that there is no room for compromise: if the IT is not working, then neither is the business.
