Ausgangstext - Englisch Colombia is by far the most serious humanitarian crisis in the Western hemisphere and has one of the worst internal displacement problems in the world. Official government statistics put the numer of internally displaced persons (IDPs) since 1995 at 720,000, while nongovernmentals organizations (NGOs) estimate the figure to be closer to 2 million. According to the national Associacion of Financial Institutions, 158,000 Colombians left the country last year. Thousands of them have applied for refugee status in other Latin American countries, North America, Europe, and elsewhere. Although its mandate worldwide is the protection of refugees, UNHCR has been working with IDPs in Colombia since 1999 at the invitation of the Colombian goverbment. [p. 195]
