Anbauverbot MON810-Mais in Frankreich

Das seit Anfang 2008 in Frankreich geltende Anbauverbot für gentechnisch veränderten MON810-Mais ist wissenschaftlich nicht gerechtfertigt. Zu diesem Ergebnis kommt eine erneute Überprüfung von MON810-Mais, die auf Anfrage der EU-Kommission durch die Europäische Behörde für Lebensmittelsicherheit (EFSA) durchgeführt wurde. Auch für die beiden gv-Maislinien Bt11 und 1507 gibt es hinsichtlich ihrer Umweltsicherheit keine neuen Erkenntnisse.
Maisblüte: Bt-Pollen - eine Gefahr für Bienen?
Aus der Stellungnahme der EFSA: "Das GMO-Expertengremium stellt fest, dass es aufgrund des niedrigen Expressionsniveaus des Cry1Ab-Proteins (Bt-Toxin) im Pollen in Verbindung mit seiner geringen Toxizität unwahrscheinlich ist, dass es unter normalen Bedingungen zu nachteiligen Auswirkungen auf Bienen kommt. In verschiedenen Labor- und kontrollierten Feldversuchen konnten zudem keine Hinweise für Auswirkungen von MON810-Pollen auf Bienen gefunden werden. Die von Frankreich zur Verfügung gestellten Dokumente liefern keine neuen wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse, die frühere Sicherheitsabschätzungen von MON810-Mais entkräften könnten."

Im Januar 2008 hatte die französische Regierung ein nationales Anbauverbot für den seit 1998 in der EU zugelassenen MON810-Mais verhängt, da es "ernsthafte Zweifel" an seiner Sicherheit gebe. Frankreich hatte sich dabei auf eine Schutzklausel in der EU-Freisetzungsrichtlinie (2001/18) berufen und der EU-Kommission verschiedene aktuelle wissenschaftliche Veröffentlichungen übergeben. Diese bezogen sich auf verschiedene Untersuchungen und Literaturstudien zu möglichen Auswirkungen von MON810-Mais auf verschiedene Nicht Zielorganismen , aber auch mögliche gesundheitliche Risiken.
Die Kommission hatte daraufhin die EFSA beauftragt, die von Frankreich angeführten Studien auf neue sicherheitsrelevante Erkenntnisse hin auszuwerten. Am 29. Oktober schloss das zuständige Expertengremium der EFSA die Beratungen dazu ab.
Die Gutachter stellten fest, dass die vorgelegten Studien keine neuen wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse liefern, welche die frühere Sicherheitsbewertung von MON810 entkräften könnten. Das französische Anbauverbot für MON810 sei daher "wissenschaftlich unbegründet".
Auch für die beiden gv-Maislinien Bt11 und 1507 bekräftigte die ESA ihre frühere Sicherheitsbewertung. Beide gv-Maislinien sind trotz einer positiven Bewertung durch die EFSA von der EU-Kommission bisher nicht zugelassen worden, da vor allem EU-Umweltkommissar Stavros Dimas bezweifelte, dass alle sicherheitsrelevanten Aspekte ausreichend berücksichtigt worden seien.
Die Kommission hatte der EFSA dazu elf neuere Veröffentlichungen vorgelegt. In ihrer aktuellen Stellungnahme kommt die EFSA zu dem Ergebnis, dass weder diese Studien, noch weitere aktuelle wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen neue Hinweise liefern, um den beiden gv-Maislinien eine Zulassung zu versagen. Beantragt ist, Bt11 und 1507-Mais für den Anbau in der EU zuzulassen.

Ban on cultivating MON810 maize in France
EFSA: “No new findings justifying a ban on cultivation.”

The ban on the cultivation of genetically modified MON810 maize which has been in force in France since the start of 2008 is not scientifically justified. This is the conclusion reached after a re-assessment of MON810 maize, which was carried out by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) at the request of the European Commission. There are also no new findings concerning the environmental safety of two other strains of genetically modified maize, Bt11 and 1507.
Maize flowers: Bt pollen harmful to bees?
From the EFSA statement: “The EFSA panel of experts on GMOs concludes that, given the low expression level of protein Cry1Ab (Bt toxin) in the pollen in conjunction with its low toxicity, it is unlikely that bees will be adversely affected under normal conditions. Moreover, various controlled laboratory and field studies produced no indications that MON810 pollen affected bees. The documents made available by France deliver no new scientific findings which could undermine previous safety assessments of MON810 maize.”
In January 2008 the French government had issued a nationwide ban on cultivating MON810 maize which has been authorised for cultivation in the EU since 1998, since there were “serious doubts” as to its safety. France had referred to a safeguard clause in EU Directive (2001/18) on the release of GMOs into the environment and had submitted various current scientific publications to the EU Commission in support of its claim. These referred to various investigations and written studies on the possible effects of MON810 maize on various non-target organisms as well as possible health risks.
The Commission had then requested the EFSA to examine the studies referred to by France for new findings as to safety. The EFSA panel of experts responsible for this evaluation completed their consultation on 29 October 2008.
The experts established that the studies given to them delivered no new scientific findings which could undermine the previous safety assessment of MON810. The French ban on cultivating MON810 was therefore “scientifically unfounded”.
The EFSA also strengthened its previous safety assessment of the two GM strains of maize, Bt11 and 1507. As yet, neither of these GM maize strains has been authorised by the EU Commission despite the EFSA’s positive rating, above all because EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas doubted that all safety-related aspects had been thoroughly considered.
The Commission had submitted 11 more recent publications to the EFSA. In their current statement the EFSA concludes that neither these studies nor additional, current scientific investigations provided any new indications that these two GM strains of maize should not be authorised. An application to allow the cultivation of Bt11 and 1507 maize in the EU has been submitted.

C’est à ce stade qu’il est le plus libre de choisir un produit qui, tout en répondant aux besoins du service, pourra tenir compte d’autres impératifs tenant compte du développement durable.

Il est essentiel qu’en aucun cas la description de l’objet du marché n’ait pour effet de restreindre l’accès au marché à des entreprises nationales ou particulières. »
Le consommateur public voulant s’approvisionner en produits équitables demandera dans l’objet de marché une ou des fournitures (café, thé,…) « produite(s) dans des conditions respectant les critères internationaux de commerce équitable ». Ces critères (voir ci-dessous) seront à préciser dans les spécifications techniques du cahier spécial des charges. Celles-ci peuvent faire référence à la certification Fair Trade Garantie (Max Havelaar) . Elles spécifient alors qu’un « produit portant la certification Fair Trade Garantie (Max Havelaar) ou une certification équivalente ou un produit répondant à des conditions équivalentes est considéré comme respectant les critères internationaux du commerce équitable »
La certification Fair Trade Garantie (Max Havelaar) offre en effet la garantie de non-discrimination puisque tout acteur économique respectant certains critères peut apposer le logo sur ses produits. Elle est de plus intégrée au niveau international au sein de FLO . Toute entreprise allemande, française, hollandaise, italienne,… peut ainsi solliciter et obtenir cette certification.
Définition d’un produit « portant la certification Fair Trade Garantie (Max Havelaar) ou une certification équivalente ou répondant à des conditions équivalentes » :
• ou bien un produit portant la certification Fair Trade Garantie (Max Havelaar) sur son emballage ;
• ou bien un produit portant sur son emballage une certification équivalente, respectant les mêmes principes de base que ceux de la certification Fair Trade Garantie (Max Havelaar) ; le soumissionnaire doit fournir les documents nécessaires pour preuve de l’équivalence de cette certification avec la certification Fair Trade Garantie (Max Havelaar) ;
• ou bien un produit répondant à des conditions équivalentes à celles de la certification Fair Trade Garantie (Max Havelaar); le soumissionnaire doit fournir les attestations nécessaires pour preuve de l’équivalence avec la certification Fair Trade Garantie (Max Havelaar).
LES CRITERES INTERNATIONAUX DU COMMERCE EQUITABLE
Le Parlement européen, dans son rapport sur le commerce équitable et le développement du 6 juin 2006 précise les différents critères auxquels doivent répondre les activités se réclamant du commerce équitable (voir 1.6.).
Une autre possibilité est de faire référence à la CIRCULAIRE MINISTERIELLE (BELGE) SUR LES ACHATS DURABLES destinée aux Services Publics Fédéraux et aux Services de Programmation : www.guidedesachatsdurables.be
Celle-ci reprend pratiquement mot pour mot la définition du commerce équitable du Fair Trade Centre et précise :
Les Organismes du commerce équitable, regroupés internationalement au sein de FINE ont adopté une définition commune du commerce équitable en 2001 :
« Le commerce équitable est un partenariat commercial, fondé sur le dialogue, la transparence et le respect, dont l’objectif est de parvenir à une plus grande équité dans le commerce mondial. Il contribue au développement durable en offrant de meilleures conditions commerciales et en garantissant les droits des producteurs et des travailleurs marginalisés, tout particulièrement au Sud. Les organisations du commerce équitable (soutenues par les consommateurs) s’engagent activement à soutenir les producteurs, à sensibiliser l’opinion et à mener campagne en faveur de changements dans les règles et pratiques du commerce international conventionnel.
L’essence du commerce équitable, l’objectif stratégique du commerce équitable est de :
• Travailler délibérément avec des producteurs et des travailleurs marginalisés afin de les aider à passer d’une position de vulnérabilité à la sécurité et à l’autosuffisance économique
• Donner plus de poids aux producteurs et aux travailleurs en tant que parties prenantes de leurs organisations
• Jouer activement un plus grand rôle dans l’arène mondiale pour parvenir à une plus grande équité dans le commerce mondial ».
Même si cette définition est communément admise, reprise dans différents documents officiels, notamment par la Commission européenne dans une communication de la Commission au Conseil sur le « commerce équitable », il n’en reste pas moins que ce type de commerce n’est pas reconnu légalement, juridiquement.
Le prix est un élément majeur d’une relation commerciale équitable. En conséquence l’acheteur s’engage à déterminer le prix « équitable » en tenant compte des critères suivants. Le prix d’achat au producteur doit permettre :
• de couvrir les coûts de production et de logistique,
• de verser une rémunération qui permette de satisfaire les besoins fondamentaux des producteurs et travailleurs désavantagés ainsi que de leurs familles, et d’améliorer leur niveau de vie (éducation, culture, santé, logement, loisirs, etc.)
• de dégager une marge permettant de réaliser les investissements à la production et de contribuer à la satisfaction des besoins collectifs (organisation, éducation, culture, santé, loisirs, infrastructures, structuration des organisations de producteurs etc.) ».
Le prix ainsi payé au producteur ou à l’organisation de producteurs doit lui être le plus favorable d’entre les prix du marché lorsqu’ils existent, qu’ils soient local, international, ou définis par des organisations de commerce équitable fédérées au plan international.
Des préfinancements doivent être octroyés lorsque les producteurs, les usines ou les plantations le demandent.
Des contrats à moyen et long termes doivent permettre aux producteurs, usines et plantations de planifier et investir dans des pratiques de production durable.
Tous les produits alimentaires munis d’un label commerce équitable sont sélectionnés sur base des critères suivants :
• Critères commerciaux
- Le prix doit couvrir les coûts de production et offre une marge d'investissement pour les améliorations sociales et environnementales
- L'achat doit se faire directement auprès des producteurs
- Des relations commerciales stables doivent s'établir
- Des conditions financières favorables aux producteurs doivent être prévues
• Critères relatifs aux organisations de cultivateurs et aux plantations
- Les organisations de producteurs indépendants doivent être démocratiques et transparentes
- Les plantations doivent remplir les conditions suivantes :
Les ouvriers doivent recevoir au moins le salaire minimum légal
La liberté syndicale doit être garantie
Il ne peut y avoir ni travail d'enfants ni travail forcé
Les ouvriers doivent avoir droit à la santé et à la sécurité sur les lieux de travail
• Critères de production
- Un certain nombre de mesures de protection de l'environnement doivent être prises et respectées.
La preuve du respect des critères repris ci-dessus peut être apportée par des labels, par exemple : les labels FLO (ex. Max Havelaar, Fair Trade,…) ou d’une autre manière.
UNE BONNE NOUVELLE POUR LES MARCHES PUBLICS ET LE COMMERCE EQUITABLE
La province néerlandaise de Groningen est en droit de demander dans ses appels d’offres que ses fournisseurs respectent six critères de base du commerce équitable. C’est le jugement prononcé en première instance suite à l’attaque du groupe Douwe Egberts.
Conformément à la législation néerlandaise, cette province avait inscrit un certain nombre d’ « exigences fondamentales » figurant dans les standards de Fairtrade / Max Havelaar dans ses appels d’offres pour le café :
• provenance de coopératives de petits producteurs,
• prix minimum,
• prix supérieur au cours mondial si celui-ci est supérieur au prix garanti,
• préfinancement partiel sur demande,
• relation sur le long terme,
• programme d’appui aux producteurs.
Mais, en novembre 2007, coup de théâtre, la province de Groningen (Pays-Bas) était assignée en justice par le groupe alimentaire Douwe Egbert (filiale de Sara Lee) pour « discrimination ». Motif : ces critères représentent une barrière à l'entrée et une "mesure discriminatoire" pour les éventuels soumissionnaires, parmi lesquels l'entreprise d'agro-alimentaire et sa caution éthique : Utz Certified.
La décision de la Cour, favorable à la province, s’appuie sur la Directive communautaire 2004/18/EC ; communication interprétative de la Commission (COM (2001) 566) du 15 octobre 2001) ; rapport du Parlement Européen sur Commerce équitable et développement (2005/2245(INI)) ; article 177 du traité CE.
Selon Jean-Pierre Doussin, Président de Max Havelaar France : « D'une part, au regard du droit communautaire, elle [cette décision] reconnaît la complète légalité de l'inclusion dans les cahiers des charges accompagnant les appels d'offres publics de clauses se référant aux critères du commerce équitable. D'autre part, elle fait bien la différence entre le commerce équitable et des démarches voisines. »
Pour Coen de Ruiter, directeur de Max Havelaar Pays-Bas, « D'autres initiatives que la nôtre existent, et c’est très bien. Cependant, la garantie Max Havelaar est la seule qui s'adresse spécifiquement à des petits producteurs de café, et la seule qui assure au moins un prix plancher couvrant leurs coûts, ainsi qu'une prime de développement pour des investissements sociaux. » Les différentes structures pourraient cependant être complémentaires : « Il y a des règles minimales de décence nécessaires dans leur conduite d'achat qui font que les droits du travail sont respectés et que l'environnement reste protégé, reconnaît Max Havelaar. C'est pourquoi Utz Kapeh [ancien nom de Utz Certified] est une bonne initiative. Ils demandent aux producteurs de respecter des normes minimales précises, suivies de l'observation de contrôles extérieurs et indiquent aux torréfacteurs les meilleurs moyens de produire du café ».

“Before starting the whole process, the authority awarding the contract will determine the real needs, that is, the aim of the procurement. At this stage the authority is most at liberty to choose a product which, while meeting the needs of the service, will be able to take other requirements relating to sustainable development into account.

It is essential that in no case should defining the aim of the procurement lead to restricting access to the procurement for national or individual companies.”
Public consumers wishing to buy Fair Trade products will demand that the procurement should aim to include one or more items (coffee, tea ...) “produced in conditions showing respect for international Fair Trade citeria.” These criteria (see below) will be defined in the technical specifications contained in the terms and conditions. They can refer to Fair Trade Garantie (Max Havelaar) certification, in which case they would specify that “products with Fair Trade Garantie (Max Havelaar) or an equivalent certification or which meet equivalent conditions are considered to fulfil international Fair Trade criteria.”
Indeed Fair Trade Garantie (Max Havelaar) certification guarantees non-discrimination since all the economic players complying with certain criteria can print the label on their products. In addition, it is integrated at the international level within FLO . Any company, whether German, French, Dutch, Italian.... can therefore apply for and obtain this certification.
The definition of a product “bearing Fair Trade Garantie (Max Havelaar) certification or an equivalent certification or fulfilling equivalent conditions” is:
• either a product with a Fair Trade Garantie (Max Havelaar) certification on its packaging;
• or a product with an equivalent certification which respects the same fundamental principles as those of the Fair Trade Garantie (Max Havelaar) certification; the tenderer must provide the necessary documents as proof of this equivalence to the Fair Trade Garantie (Max Havelaar) certification;
• or a product meeting the conditions equivalent to those of the Fair Trade Garantie (Max Havelaar) certification; the tenderer must provide necessary certificates as proof of equivalence to the Fair Trade Garantie (Max Havelaar) certification.
INTERNATIONAL FAIR TRADE CRITERIA
In its report on Fair Trade and Development of 6 June 2006 , the European Parliament defines the various criteria which must be met by activities claiming to be Fair Trade activities (see 1.6).
Another possibility is to refer to the (BELGIAN) MINISTRY CIRCULAR ON SUSTAINABLE PURCHASES for Federal Public Services and Planning services: www.guidedesachatsdurables.be
This adopts the Fair Trade Centre definition of Fair Trade almost word for word, stating:
The Fair Trade organisations grouped together within FINE adopted a common definition of Fair Trade in 2001:
“Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to and securing the rights of marginalised producers and workers, especially in the South. The Fair Trade organisations (backed by consumers) are engaged actively in supporting producers, awareness-raising and in campaigning for changes in the rules and practices of conventional international trade.
The essence of Fair Trade, Fair Trade’s strategic intent is:
• Deliberately to work with marginalised producers and workers in order to help them move from a position of vulnerability to security and economic self-sufficiency;
• Empower producers and workers as stakeholders in their own organisations actively;
• Play a wider role in the global arena to achieve greater equity in international trade.”
Despite the fact this definition is commonly recognised and repeated in various official documents, notably by the Commission in an official communication from the Commission to the Council on ‘Fair Trade’, the fact remains that this system of trade is not recognised in law, in the courts.
Price plays a major role in Fair Trade and consumers are involved in determining a ‘Fair’ price by taking the following criteria into consideration. The price paid to producers should enable them to:
• Cover production and logistics costs;
• Pay wages enabling disadvantaged producers and workers to meet their basic needs and those of their families and improve their living standards (education, culture, health, housing and leisure activities etc.);
• Leave a margin allowing them to invest in production and contribute to meeting the collective needs (of communities) (organisation, education, culture, health, leisure activities, infrastructure, structuring of producers’ organisations etc.).”
The price paid to producers or producers’ organisations should therefore be the most beneficial from among market prices where these exist, either locally, internationally or as defined by Fair Trade organisations belonging to the international federation.
Pre-payment of orders should be made on request from producers, factories or plantations.
Medium- and long-term contracts must enable producers, factories and plantations to plan for and invest in practices which contribute to sustainable development.
All food products bearing a Fair Trade label are selected according to the following criteria:
• Commercial criteria
- The price must cover production costs and provide a margin for investing in and improving social and environmental conditions
- Goods must be bought direct from producers
- Stable trading partnerships must be formed
- Financial terms beneficial to producers must be provided for
• Criteria relating to growers’ organisations and plantations
- Independent producers’ organisations must be democratic and transparent
- Plantations must fulfill the following conditions:
Workers must receive at least the legal minimum wage
Trade union freedom must be guaranteed
There must be no child labour or forced labour
Workers must have the right to heath and safety in the workplace
• Production criteria
- A certain number of measures to protect the environment must be implemented and respected.
Proof of compliance with the above criteria can be provided with labels such as FLO labels (e.g. Max Havelaar, Fair Trade …) or via another means.
GOOD NEWS FOR PUBLIC PROCUREMENT AND FAIR TRADE
The Dutch province of Groningen has every right to require that suppliers should conform to six criteria based on Fair Trade in its invitation to tender. This was the judgement given in the first instance following objections from the Douwe Egberts group.
In accordance with Dutch law the province had specified a number of ‘basic requirements’ compliant with Fair Trade/ Max Havelaar standards in its invitations to tender for coffee:
• direct purchase from small farmer cooperatives,
• cost-effective minimum price,
• supplement on the world market price, if the world market price exceeds the guaranteed price,
• pre-financing of a percentage of the selling price on request,
• long-term partnership,
• entry to support program for producers.
However, there was a dramatic turn of events in November 2007, when the province of Groningen (Netherlands) was served with a summons to appear in court by the food suppliers Douwe Egberts (a subsidiary of Sara Lee) for ‘discrimination’. The reason given was that the criteria constituted a barrier to submission and were therefore ‘a discriminatory measure’ for possible tenderers, including the food processing and its ethical certification, Utz Certified.
The court’s judgement in favour of the province rested on the EU Directive 2004/18/EC, the Interpretative Communication of the Commission on Community Law (COM (2001) 566) of 15 October 2001), the European Parliament Draft Report on Fair Trade and Development (2005/2245(INI), article 177 of the EC Treaty.
According to Jean-Pierre Doussin, President of Max Havelaar, France: “On the one hand, it [the decision] recognises the total legality of full inclusion in the specifications accompanying public tenders of clauses referring to Fair Trade criteria under Community law. On the other hand, it makes a clear distinction between Fair Trade and related approaches.”
For Coen de Ruiter, director of Max Havelaar, Netherlands: “Other initiatives than ours exist and that is a good thing. However, the Max Havelaar guarantee is the only one which is specifically aimed at small coffee producers and guarantees at least a minimum price to cover their costs as well as a premium for development and social investment.” The different structures could nevertheless be complementary: “There are basic rules of decency in their methods of purchase which enable workers’ rights to be respected and the environment protected, Max Havelaar acknowledges. This is why Utz Kapeh [former name of Utz Certified] is a good initiative. They require producers to respect certain minimum standards, follow this up through the implementation of external monitoring and suggest the best methods of producing coffee to coffee roasters”.

Die Verbraucher tendieren heute verstärkt zu leichteren alkoholischen Getränken, die auf natürliche Weise hergestellt werden. Davon profitiert auch der Apfelwein, der sich zunehmender Beliebtheit auch in Verbraucherkreisen findet, in denen er noch vor einigen Jahren wenig bekannt war und wo er nun fester Bestandteil der Konsumgewohnheiten ist.
Um diese Entwicklung zu fördern, schreibt selection in Kooperation mit dem Hessischen Apfelweinverband und der DLG einen Internationalen Apfelweinwettbewerb aus, zu dem alle Apfeleinhersteller ihre Produkte anmelden können (genaue Teilnahmebedingungen siehe unten). Die Apfelweine werden von einer Fachjury im Rahmen der Internationalen Apfelweinmesse in Darmstadt (27. bis 29. März 2009) nach dem Internationalen DLG-Prüfschema verkostet und bewertet. Die besten 10 werden am letzten Messetag dem interessierten Publikum bekannt gegeben.
Das Ergebnis des Wettbewerbs wird außerdem direkt im Anschluss an die Internationale Apfelweinmesse in Darmstadt (27. – 29. März 2009) auf www.selection-online.de und in einem mehrseitigen Apfelwein-Special in der Sommerausgabe 2/09 der Publikumszeitschrift selection veröffentlicht.

International Apple Wine Competition
Organised by selection in cooperation with the Hessischen Apfelweinverband (Association of Apple Wine Producers in Hessen) and the DLG (German Agricultural Society) the competition will be held during the International Apple Wine Trade Fair 2009 (27-29 March 2009).
Nowadays consumers show a strong preference for weaker alcoholic drinks which are naturally produced. Apple wine is also benefiting from this trend and although relatively unknown among consumer groups a few years ago, drinking apple wine is growing increasingly popular and is now a well established consumer habit.
To promote this development selection, together with the Hessischen Apfelweinverband and the DLG, is announcing an international apple wine competition for which all apple wine producers can enter their products (see below for exact conditions of participation). The apple wines will be tasted and assessed by a panel of experts according to international DLG testing procedures during the International Apple Wine Trade Fair in Darmstadt (27 to 29 March 2009). The best 10 will be announced to interested members of the public on the last day of the fair.
In addition, the results of the competition will be available at www.selection-online.de immediately after the end of the International Apple Wine Trade Fair in Darmstadt (27-29 March 2009) and published in a special Apple Wine Supplement of several pages in the summer issue 2/09 of selection magazine for the general public.

Having completed an MA and the ITI's Orientation course for freelancers, I am now setting up as freelance translator of German and French into English. I work full-time, including evenings and weekends.
I achieved average marks of 74% for German and 68% for French into English Translation on the MA in Translation in a European Context course at Aston University 2007-8 and I have just completed the ITI's Orientation course where my translations were professionally assessed as good to excellent and commercially usable.
I have been translating freelance and professionally since the summer and have most experience in the following: HR (recruitment and training), education (including educational policy, certificates and reports), health and social care, marketing and commercial, literature and the Arts,linguistics and academic research papers and lectures. I have experience in domains such as building, alternative energy, medical research, Fair Trade, biosafety, descriptions of pharmaceutical products, insurance, journalism and politics. Before becoming a translator I was a teacher, hence the speacialism in education, literature and also health and social care. An interest in the Arts, travel, gardening and cookery has added areas such as music, film, theatre, food and drink.
After a long and wide-ranging academic and professional experience, I can offer the following skills:
